Drink recipe suggestions

Hello all.

A couple years back my group of friends decided to start throwing an annual holiday party (around Christmas/New Years).

A few weeks before the party, we draw names for our "Secret Boozer" grab bag. It works much like secret santa; however, it involves purchasing roughly $30 worth of alcohol for the person you draw and this must be their main drink throughout the night. If you gift hard liquor, you must also include necessary mixers to create a cocktail. Your gift and gift recipient remain a secret until the beginning of the party when everyone exchanges presents.

Anyways, I'd like to get some suggestions of drinks and cocktails that my fellow Got|Apexers enjoy in a party atmosphere.

I've checked out sites like DrinksMixer which have tons of recipes...but it's really tough to sort out what would actually be good or not. Many seem to be strange concoctions someone whipped up when plastered and then gave a crazy name to.

I know my recipient enjoys whiskey. I also recall he got Manhattans last year and Jim & Coke the year before. I was thinking about sticking with a Whiskey based drink or maybe a long island..although that could get pricey due to all the different liquors involved.

What do you guys enjoy?

Whiskey drinks. Hmmm:

Mint Julep:

mix up 3 or 4 sprigs of mint, 1 tsp of sugar, 2 tsp. water in a collins glass (tall narrow cocktail glass). Add ice to fill the glass, then pour in about 3 oz. of bourbon. Garnish with a mint sprig.

The Manhattan:

Combine 3/4 oz. vermouth, about 3 oz. bourbon, a dash or three of Angostura bitters, and a couple of ice cubes into a mixing glass. Gently stir them, not too rough or the mixture becomes cloudy. Place a maraschino cherry in a cocktail glass, and strain the whiskey mixture over it. Take a twist of orange or lemon peel and rub the rim of the glass, then twist the peel a little to release its oils some and garnish the drink with it.

The simple Highball:

Fill a glass with ice. Pour in about 3 oz. of bourbon, and top it with ginger ale.

Wild turkey is my booze of choice. Take the 80 proof, skip the ice. I want it to go down warm, not cold. And 101 straight is a bit rough. 80-85 proof is optimal drinking strength.

i actually prefer mine on the chilly side. its my DOC as well. the 80 is a little bland for me, but then again, i'm still young, and my tolerence is high, so it doesn't bother me

That's because your ice is melting and watering it. If I wanted ice, i'd probably go for 101 as well

A 10% change in alcohol level is not goin to impact "tolerance" very much. My concern isn't it getting me drunk, but at that alcohol level straight you're numbing your tongue and not getting the full flavor of the whiskey.
