HOT! Staples - Maxtor 500GB USB 2.0 External Hard Drive for Only $99.98 with FREE Shipping

Every time we see these 500gb external drives dip below the $100, the offer
gets pulled faster than anything else I've seen all summer. So if you need a
bump in space or just need an additional drive "just because" then
get it soon because I doubt this will last. Instant discount has no expiration
date set to it so it can go at any time. MAXTOR
500GB BASICS PERSONAL STORAGE 3200 EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE DEAL

Well honestly, there is no way of knowing that unless you get one and open it up.

This is an EXTERNAL drive, so it doesn't use the IDE or SATA interfaces... only USB. Were you planning on getting one and then swapping the drive out for something else?

Maybe you can call Seagate and ask them directly about it? The model number on it is Personal Storage U01H500 and here is a link to the Seagate website for that product:

I always thought the drives could be removed from their enclosures to be used internally. I recalled from older deals external drives where people would pull the drives from the enclosure to use in their computers. Unless some companies design them specifically without the interface? (which I can't imagine they'd do without driving production cost up...)

Yeah, you can do that. It's just a regular 'ol desktop drive in there, so you can certainly crack it open & put it inside of a machine if you like.

Most external drives I've seen have been ATA, but more & more seem to be SATA (like the WD MyBook I believe uses SATA drives). So yeah, it could go either way but if I were a betting man, I'd put my money on it being SATA.
