5 of 5 Be careful in! Thursday, March 20, 2008
A Customer from los angeles

There are three kind of Ambicom's Bluetooth GPS receivers: BT-GPS rev 1.0, BT-GPS-H1 rev 1.5 and BT-GPS-H1 rev 2.0. The pictured one in this web page looks only BT-GPS rev 1.0 which is older version. BT-GPS-H1 must be different shape and higher level function. It is not worth to spend almost $60 to buy this old thing.

5 of 5 Works great with TMobile Shadow and Google Maps Wednesday, November 28, 2007
techgeek from Oswego, IL
Have not problems, works as expected. Acquires satellite in about 1-2 minutes if place on my dash board. I used it with a TMobile Shadow with Google Maps tracked my location just fine. (Thanks Ken, in an earlier review which showed how to manually set up this on Windows Mobile.) However, seems like Google maps has a delay in the tracking. For example if I am in the car driving at 40pmh or more, the location shown is about 2 seconds behind where I really am. From looking at how it behaves its seems like Google samples your location from the GPS once a second and it takes another second for it to update the map. I am guessing this is where the 2 second delay comes from. Again, great little unit for the price. Nice accessory for your Windows Mobile Phone.

5 of 5 SmartPhone users need this product! Thursday, September 27, 2007
Liverdonor from Shoreline, WA
First, a caveat: the item pictured here is _not_exactly_ the item I purchased - I bought the smaller unit (simply called the BT-GPS). Nonetheless, I paired this unit with no less than four different devices: my wife's Treo 600w, an HTC Excalibur, an HTC Tornado and a Motorola Q (all of which run Windows Mobile 6). We then proceeded to use this unit heavily for several days of navigation around Northern New Jersey (which, as anyone who lives there knows, is not easy even for locals), and on a road trip up to Montauk Light on Long Island. Unlike some of the other postings, I had no problems pairing the device - it just worked. One word of advice - if Windows Mobile is your phone/device's OS, be sure to assign an outgoing virtual bluetooth COM port to the device in the Settings!Connections!Bluetooth setup screen - otherwise, the device will not be able to tell the Ambicom how to find the ephemeris of the satellites and it won't pair properly. The Ambicom performed brilliantly. The battery in the device remains charged long enough for about one day of use, provided that you turn the unit off when you're not actively using it. I'd estimate we had it turned on and locked-on for about 6 hours, cumulative, on its longest run (the drive to Montauk). All in all, it worked really well, with one minor exception - in the city (specifically, lower Manhattan), it did not seem to be able to lock on as quickly and in some cases could not lock-on at all. It should be noted however that I do not have a lot of experience using GPS in large cities (I use these things mostly on boats, actually) and that the problems may have been due to multipathing signals in the city canyons between the large buildings. I am a convert - I'll never visit an unfamiliar place without my smart phone and my Ambicom GPS again.

4 of 5 Good Product and Works Friday, May 25, 2007
A Customer from Fairfax, VA
There are not any bells and whistles here but this unit works for basic GPS with your phone or PDA. It did take a bit of time to get the pairing set up, but that was a phone problem. The unit pairs quickly and locks on. I also bought LeLorme Mapping for Pocket PC and the system does a nice job of basic navigation. I was very happy overall and do not regret the purchase. Mike

4 of 5 Good product for the cost Wednesday, March 21, 2007
A Customer from LI, NY
I am pleasantly suprised on how accurate this GPS receiver is for the cost. Setup took a little playing around with to pair up the BT with my PocketPC PDA. The rechargeable battery is a plus, you can store the receiver out of reach of DC power. Ambicom support was very responsive and helpful.

4 of 5 Works Well Once It Gets Going Tuesday, March 20, 2007
A Customer from Corona, CA
Be forewarned, the product does not seem to come with a user manual or any map software by default (Buy.com did recently add the Hardware Only tag, which does clarify this). Mine also came with no chargers, but I emailed customer service at Ambicom and they promptly sent them out, no charge, and even threw in the quick installation guide. There is a different version of this product that does come with the software and the guide, though it is a bit more expensive.<br><br> Quick hint on the LEDs: The blue LED on the left (bluetooth) blinks while trying to connect to a bluetooth device and goes solid once it has been paired. The green LED in the middle blinks while trying to connect to the GPS satellites, then goes solid once connected. The red LED on the right goes solid if the device is on and the battery is low or if the device is off and the battery is charging.<br><br> As for the product itself, once I got it charged, it did start working. Bluetooth paired up quickly and it did acquire the GPS signal (eventually). Once connected, the GPS signal holds on fairly well and picks up quickly if it does drop for a moment. It seems to not be very consistent in terms of how long it takes to initially acquire the GPS signal. After having been connected and shutting it off for a few minutes, it took over five minutes to reconnect (during which time I tried powering on/off, driving around, standing still, etc...it just all-of-a-sudden picked up and then worked fine) this happened again the next day.<br><br> Overall, it seems to be a decent product for the price if you have a few minutes to wait for it after power on...just don't shut it off once you have a signal.
