Holy crap.

I don't even understand the physics involved with that...how can you make such a great sound by hitting a guitar string...don't you have to hit it REALLY hard?

Sort of....if you have a good guitar, the sound will resonate out really well with less hammering. But if you do have a cheaper guitar, it will take a little more strength to get more sound.
