a multitude of bad movies lately

I'm not sure how many other people have noticed this but lately (last 6 months) there has been only a handful of "good" movies. The rest of the movies are either rehashed, poorly scripted, 100% green screened, or just plain sucky.

I for one can not justify the 9 (*2 for a date) dollar price it costs to go to the movies. When it costs 50 dollars to fill up my car for the week, 20 dollars to go to the movies is outrageous for the expierence that I recieve.

Looking down the list at rottentomatoes.com there is 3 movies in the top 10 movies that are not rotten.

Can't the studios come out with something new and entertaining? I hate to say it but the only summer blockbusters I was excited to see were Cars, Superman, and that new movie about nascar coming out in a few weeks (the name escapes me).

Now I may be alone in my thinking but this whole post is leading up to that I can see why movie theaters are losing so much money. I hate going to the movies and I know a lot of people that feel the exact same way.

So before you go this weekend and spend your hard earned money (maybe its gas money) to go see Me, You and Dupree. Think to yourself if you want to see just another potty humor filled joke fest.

that is all

Stick to the 50 cent and $1 movies...

At least that way, by the time you see them you'll already know if it is a waste of time... and even if it was, the cost really didn't matter.

Take that date somewhere nice... maybe for dinner... and possibly cocktails later.

I love Pixar to death and you'd think I'd go see Cars the minute it came out, but I haven't. Why? Because the experience at the theater is not worth the trouble. First you pay $8-9 to get in, then if you want some snacks it'll cost you $10 (and really, what's the movie experience without snacks)

oh...wow...I actually don't remember finishing that post...or even hitting the post button. That's odd.

To answer your point, yeah I should bring snacks, but I don't carry or wear anything large enough to sneak in anything. Plus I can't even figure out how to pack a lunch for work or school let alone for a movie.

To finish my original post, first there's the cost. Second, there's watching a movie with a bunch of punk ass teens with their cell phones going off and laughing at random and stupid points of the movie. You have kids, annoying and inconsiderate people, etc. Then the floor can be sticky, the room uncomfortable, and when there's a 3 hour movie you can't pause the movie to go take a piss.

I've read some points about the movie theater industry, and how they're blaming piracy, iTunes, DVDs, video games, the internet, a moose, anything that breathes for the declining industry. I think it's just a stagnant and lost industry that has no idea that they're not just a place where people can see movies. My ideal movie theater is at home with a good HDTV, good sound system, and a good couch. I don't need a uber large screen with huge speakers blaring. I just need a comfortable and entertaining environment, and movie theaters don't cut it anymore.

I like to actually, you know, understand what I'm watching.

But seriously, my movie habits are different than yours, which is fine. I like my movies to be as effortless and entertaining as possible. That's why I hate horror movies and it takes me a while to build myself up to watch action movies. If I wanted to be stressed out or to be intellectually challenged, I would do some work. That's just my personal tastes.

thats why you get your GF (who usually brings their bag with them) to pack the snacks for ya.
or just ask your girl buddy (if you dont have a GF).

when a cell phone rings and some kid answers it, a friend of mine gets up and grabs that cell phone and throws it far across the movie theater. he gets a standing ovation everytime.

if you dont want unsolicited commentary, go to some uptight suburbia movie theater. i found that people are more quiet there.

at least you have a good alternative at your place.

but i hear ya about movie theaters, i myself only got to movies maybe 3 times a year. im going to exceed that this year, probably, im already up to 2.

its expensive, and the continuous side commentaries of some people are annoying, and the smell of some theaters are just disgusting.

i found that going to movie theaters nowadays are more of a social event than simply watching the movie to be entertained. You meet up with your friends, get some snacks before or have dinner, then you go to the movie theater, and then when you leave you go talk about it, if you liked it, if you hated it, what you loved/hated about it. That goes on either at a bar, or when everyone goes to someone's place to hang some more.
its expensive, yes, but you know youre not the only sucker who went in and paid that much money. You feel ok about it in that sense (he he).

if i DO go by myself, it has to have something really compelling for me to go see it. i choose The Ritz Theater here (15 minutes from me), or the relatively newly-opened Loews Theater (20 minutes away from me). I never go to the theater 2 minutes away from me. The AMC theaters here are gross, disgusting, smelly, stinky, and generally needs to be burned down to the ground.

I would never leave my cell phone on in a theater, but if someone grabbed my phone out of my hand and threw it across the room...let's just say he'd have a problem. A big, big problem.

I sure hope your friend is built like a "Street Fighter" (or only picks on people he knows he can whoop), cause he would probably start a riot in the theaters in the hood for doing something like that.

Worst case scenario... you just tell them in a LOUD voice, "Hey... could you turn that down or go outside, some of us are trying to enjoy this movie".

two different times i've yelled at people in the theatre for phones. once the guy in front of us was texting. it was silent, but his screen lighting up all the time was annoying. so i asked him in my deepest voice to put it away. he did.

the other time, my ex and i were in the back of the theatre, and a group of high schoolers came in, they were being loud, then split into two groups during the previews. they started during the movie to call each others phones and listen to them go off. the first two times i was polite and asked them to please turn them off. third time, not so much. i told them to shut the ****ing things off before i had to go grab it. they did, and after the movie, 3 little high school kids start walking towards me all pissed. so i stood up, and they all turned right around and left.

With the price of movies being so expensive, couldn't they just hire a bouncer or two?

I really like the idea of throwing someone's cell phone across the theatre, though.

BTW, I can't stand Will Ferrell.

I saw the Break Up with a girl friend last night and I thought it was worth the $9. I mean yeah it's a chick flick hence I brought the friend but it was a funny movie. Vince Vaughn is hilarious as always. I am looking forward to see the Lady in the Lake movie by M Night Shamalan. I hear it won't be that good but it's M Night. I like his movies....even the Village.

The $20 is worth it if you have a date and there's a happy ending.

Check out, "A Scanner Darkly" ...the first innovative movie I've seen in theaters since Memento. I'm also excited about "marie Antoinette" and "Lady in the Water."

I wanna catch Scanner Darkly. It looks cool. I'm all about the alternative styles of movies. Memento, Phone Booth, the stories are usually not super amazing but its nice to see producers being more creative.

This argument has been rehashed since the beginning of cinema. I've seen a lot of good movies this year and new ones are always coming out. But as ArkiStan suggested, I tend to stick to more independent film and sometimes foreign Cinema. Hollywood is completely out of touch or maybe I am completely out of touch with Hollywood . There have been some big movies this year that I've enjoyed though. X-Men 3, Nacho Libre, Ice Age: The Meltdown come to mind.

I liked Nacho Libre, but what it did mainly was make me want to see Pick of Destiny on opening day.

Pick of Destiny? Is that like the spear of destiny?

Cause i'd see Constantine part deux.

I think hollywood loses quantity cause its trying to push out quantity. More money goes into each film but does it need to?

my big fat greek wedding, Blair witch, and others that elude me have done well, and not required a billion bucks to get them going. I think hollywood either needs to go small or go home. Cause only a few movies justify my 9 bucks, which i think should mean only a few movies justify big bucks. Cause alien abductions aside, people just aren't' going to movies anymore. Alternatives are better and cheaper.

oh wow, don't even get me started on the amount of absolutely sh!tty movies being made these days. there is so much CRAP out there.

i don't buy the notion that hollywood is losing money.
you know why?
because if they have enough money to make the kinds of stupid-ass "films" they've been putting out for the past decade or so, then they must be doing just fine.

the actors are fine, the directors are ready, the technology is state-of-the-art... now if they would just spend a little bit more time hunting for a decent script, instead of pushing through the flavor of the month star vehicle, or whatever they think is going to make them the most money at that very moment, then i think we'd have less of the garbage being plastered all across our movie screens these days.

even the "indie" movie scene is starting to go dry, in my opinion.

and, i mean, i'll watch a well made action movie every once in a while (i tend to find action movies kind of predictable and boring) or the occasional laugh-out-loud comedy (only a few genuine ones around), but i tend to enjoy movies with "replay value," so to speak. ones that are so superbly made that you could watch them over and over again. unfortunately, i could probably count the number of those i've seen in the past 15 years on the fingers of one hand.

hollywood needs an enima.

EDIT:
