McNabb's turn to fire shots at T.O.

Speaking to reporters after practice Friday, a cordial McNabb called Owens' recently released autobiography a "children's book," mocked the star receiver for saying he was misquoted in his own book and disputed some of the written allegations.

McNabb and Owens helped lead the Philadelphia Eagles to the Super Bowl during the 2004 season, but their relationship quickly deteriorated in 2005. Owens eventually was kicked off the team and signed with the Dallas Cowboys in March.

In "T.O.," which came out earlier this month, Owens mostly offers his side of his tumultuous second season in Philadelphia. McNabb joked that he should have been a co-author because Owens mentioned the five-time Pro Bowl quarterback at length in the book.

"It won't sell unless he's talking about me," McNabb said, adding that he didn't read the book and is waiting to play himself in the movie.

Owens likens McNabb to a bully who spat in his mouth as a teenager while he innocently slept on a school bus. He traces the root of the friction to when McNabb didn't throw him the ball on a play in a game during his first season with the Eagles.

McNabb scoffed at Owens' version of events.

"He told me, 'Hey, I was open on that. Throw me the ball,"' McNabb said in a soft voice. "And you guys believe that, I'm sure. I mean, you think about that."

Owens also claims that one of the offensive coaches told him McNabb gets tense in big games.

"It's funny how they would just come to him," McNabb said sarcastically. "Why wouldn't they just say something to me? To say that I can't play in big games, I don't think that's a true statement at all, so I don't get offended by anything he may have said in his book that he was misquoted."

McNabb denied the implication that he influenced management's decision to suspend Owens.

"I can sit here and say that's not true," McNabb said. "If I had that much pull, a lot of changes would be made."

Though he isn't too fond of Owens the person, McNabb praised Owens the player.

"He's a great player. He works hard. He gets out on the field and makes plays. That's all you ask," McNabb said. "Now, what you may get other than that, you never know nowadays."

McNabb is eager to forget about Owens and move forward following a terrible season that was equally rough on and off the field. Besides feuding with his former favorite receiver, McNabb played through injuries most of the year, before he had surgery for a sports hernia and sat out the final seven games.

The Eagles finished 6-10 and missed the playoffs for the first time since 1999, ending a string of four consecutive appearances in the NFC championship game.

A healthy McNabb is key to Philadelphia's success. But now he's facing questions about his leadership skills because of the perception that the locker room was divided among McNabb and T.O. supporters.

"I've never felt I lost the locker room and I don't feel I need to get the locker room back," McNabb said. "To be honest with you, the way that you win anything is by winning games. The way of handling it for me is just to get out on this football field, make plays and then win games."

After a strong start last season, McNabb struggled badly. Overall, he passed for 2,507 yards, 16 touchdowns, nine interceptions and had a passer rating of 85.0. He threw a costly interception in the fourth quarter in each of his last three games, the last being the one that Dallas safety Roy Williams returned 46 yards for a touchdown with 2:43 left to lead the Cowboys to a 21-20 comeback victory that dropped the Eagles' record to 4-5.

"The good thing in life is that you can put the past behind you and move on and kind of create your own future," McNabb said. "This team is definitely hungry. This team is looking forward to getting out there and answering the critics."

You'd think McNabb would take the high road, right? I mean, after all he's the good guy here. T.O. is the one with the big mouth, me me me, the total @hole.

Yet McNabb always takes the bait.

Don't get me wrong, T.O. is not an angel. Not by any stretch. But there may be some truth to what he says about McNabb; guess you'll have to read the book to find out.

Let's see how McNabb does without him this year. After all, he had his greatest success with him...can he get the magic back?

I'm a major Eagles fan, and just let me say, McNabb's press conference was 20 minutes long, and he made the comment about TO's book being a "children's book" (which was HILARIOUS) in the last 10 seconds. But of course, you watch Sportscenter and they spin it into a major headline.

McNabb is OVER this and moved on more than people would like to think. In that same press conference he PRAISED TO for the player he is.

McNabb and TO will forever be linked together as far as the media is concerned. But the fact is, you can't STOP Owens from talking. McNabb can talk all he wants, and even take shots at TO and bait him into media arguments -- but the fact is, TO is Parcell/Bledsoe's problem now, they are the ones who has to keep Owens happy and his mouth shut now...

McNabb has taken the high road this entire time. Just because he finally spoke up for himself [in the media], how is he not taking the high road? BTW, McNabb was successful LONG before TO even put on an Eagles uniform.

Trust me, I've been where you're at now -- I'm sure you think "well, this is TO's last chance, he's GOT to be a model citizen/teammate now". I know i felt that away when he left the 49ers (oh wait, AND the Ravens)... He is who he is, and that won't change...

TO's best friend on this team will be your o-line, because if they don't block for immobile Bledsoe, Bledsoe is bound to catch hell from TO, just like every other qb before him...

Ehhh, time is running short now so I'll have to write more later...but "...taken the high road the entire time"?

You gotta be kidding...off the top of my head, I can easily recall the famous "black-on-black crime" comments. Does that sound like taking the high road?

Thanks bro. The way I see it, somebody has to stand up for the good guys.

McNabb is the "good guy" in the TO/McNabb "story" but that isn't saying much b/c TO is a complete a$$hat. I would like to see McNabb whip some arse and TO to $uck this year, though. I think it would be great if Dallas would implode. If there is one team in football that I despise it is the cowboys.

I have seen him play in a lot of games but I didn't see him hit many homers. Actually I don't think I have ever seen him hit a homer. I guess that was pre-steroids. He was with the Pirates then.

maybe your definition of "taking the high road" is much different than mine.

but to me, the mere action of McNabb RESPONDING to TO (after all this time) does not qualify as not taking the high road.

You may not have AGREED with the "black-on-black crime" comment (I'm black, and didn't feel it was appropriate for the situation), but that pre-Super Bowl interview was just McNabb giving HIS side of the story. It wasn't McNabb namecalling (like TO calling him a "hypocrite", when he does not even know the meaning of the word, or calling him a "company man"). It wasn't about blaming TO solely for the team's demise (even though TO himself continually blamed McNabb for team losses, and ultimately divided the lockerroom of another NFL team, one that was successful WITHOUT him). McNabb was fully justified in RESPONDING to TO, and as far as I'm concerned, he didn't stoop down to TO's immature level in the process.

I didn't want to believe it either when he left SF, but the fact is, he is HORRIBLE teammate, and if you think otherwise, then...I'd just say you're still on your honeymoon

and being biased in favor of TO simply because he's on your team now (this is the same guy that YOU cowboys fans have justifiably hated since 2000)...

anywayz...it's done, and it's over. The media (i.e., ESPN) can continue making headlines over this. But nothing TO says (even his book) has any effect on the Eagles any longer. As I said, that's YOUR guys' problem to deal with, especially IF you aren't successful. Eagles camp is very quiet -- the only talk being getting this kid Bunkley into camp, and re-signing Dawkins, and perhaps Michael Lewis. It's back to being ALL about football over here, and no longer about sit-ups in the driveway, lol

Haha - I think that's the way most Bears fans feel about Green Bay, although they did implode for us last year.

I've never been a big Dallas fan, but I do hold Tom Landry in the absolute highest regard.
