Bama makes big offer to Dolphins' Saban

These are some crazy numbers being put out to try to hire a college football coach. A full professor at Alabama makes $50,000 a year and associates are around $36,000. Obviously the University feels that hiring Saban will add at least that value to the University or they would not have made the offer. If it is the maximum number (8 years, $40 million) he would get 100 times what a professor earns at the University. At the low end, 70 times.

I know that athletics can bring in revenue to schools but often most of what is generated by football goes to pay for football with some going to finance other non- revenue producing sports. Alabama reports that only two sports have positive revenue. Winning sports teams also make the alumni more willing to make contributions to the schools.

Bama makes big offer to Dolphins' Saban
ESPN.com news services

DAVIE, Fla. -- Alabama renewed its courtship of Dolphins coach Nick Saban on Monday, and he declined to say whether he'll remain with Miami.

Saban's head coaching career

SabanNick Saban signed a five-year contract with the Dolphins on Dec. 27, 2004, becoming the sixth coach in Miami's history.
COACHING RECORD:
With Dolphins: 15-17 (2005-present)
With LSU: 48-16 (2000-'04)*
With Michigan State: 35-24-1 (1995-'99)
With Toledo: 9-2 (1990)

* Won national title following 2003 season.

"I've got a rule that I'm not talking about any of that stuff," Saban said.

The Crimson Tide made their formal pitch Monday, ESPN's Chris Mortensen is reporting. The offer is worth $35 million to $40 million, and includes many variables. It could run from eight to 10 years. The offer does not contain a provision for a signing bonus. In general, colleges don't pay signing bonuses, and there has never been the suggestion Alabama will pay one here.

Saban and Alabama athletic director Mal Moore met Monday night in Miami.

Dolphins' owner Wayne Huizenga spent Monday at the Dolphins' facility, trying to persuade Saban to ignore Alabama's overtures and convince him to stay and finish the job he was hired to do.

Saban has three years left on his Dolphins deal worth approximately $4.5 million a year. Huizenga may have to bump him up considerably to keep him because the financial security gap is expected to be significantly different between the Dolphins and the Crimson Tide.

An Alabama official told ESPN.com's Pat Forde on Monday at 3:30 p.m. Tuscaloosa time that a final yes or no from Saban was expected "within the next 24 hours."

There are 11 colleges coaches who make over $2 million a year. There are four coaches in the $3 million-plus range, if you count USC's Pete Carroll, who made $2.93 million this year and should be over $3 million next year. Notre Dame's Charlie Weis, Iowa's Kirk Ferentz and Oklahoma's Bob Stoops are over $3 million.

A current Alabama assistant told ESPN.com's Mark Schlabach on Sunday morning that former coach Mike Shula's staff expects Saban to be named the Crimson Tide's new coach sometime this week.

"He's going to clean house here, top to bottom," the coach said.

At a 25-minute day-after-the-season news conference, Saban tried to limit the conversation to the Dolphins' disappointing year and offseason issues. But the biggest issue is whether they'll need a new coach.

For weeks Saban has denied interest in the Alabama job, which became vacant when Shula was fired Nov. 27. Reports that Alabama is again trying to lure Saban away from the Dolphins prompted another round of questions.

"I'm committed to doing my job well here," Saban said. "This is my job. That's what I've done all day today, and that's what I'll continue to do."

When asked if there's an Alabama offer on the table, Saban said, "I have not talked to anyone." When asked if he's scheduled to meet with school officials this week, he said, "I don't know about that."

Moore said he won't discuss the coaching search until it's over.

"I'm talking with three or four different coaches at this point, so I don't want to comment about any coach," Moore said.

Saban's agent declined comment.

Overall, the Alabama athletic department is reported to generate $5.2 million more than they use up and just in football, they take in $28.8 million over their expenses. This salary would eat up that surplus. http://www.ocm.auburn.edu/clippings/2006/042506.html

When it comes to bringing money in, Alabama was fourth nationally in football in expense-to-revenue difference at plus $28,803,845, trailing Texas (over $39 million), Georgia and Michigan.

Auburn ranked ninth nationally last year, showing a football profit of $24,184,850. The Blazers' football program even came in with a profit of $532,905, ranking 53rd out of 164 reporting schools.

In overall athletic department budgets, Georgia led the nation in expense-to-revenue ratio, coming in at $23 million ahead. Alabama ranked ninth at $5.2 million, and Auburn showed up 72nd on the list, ahead of overall expenses by $121,815.

I guess tuition to go to Alabama just went up huh?

Around these parts... we stay away from the "red tide" (i.e. dead fish .. j/k ), however it looks like Bama is gonna be "in the red" for awhile if Saban doesn't win for them and garner alot of alumni contributions.

Umm, ZJ's article states differently:

Great hire for 'Bama. Saban has proven to be a good coach at MSU and LSU. He's known for his recruiting ability. I'd expect Alabama to move up the ladder a bit in the near future, especially if he can work his recruiting magic.

Saban has agreed to take the Alabama coaching job. I haven't seen the final number yet, but guess it was about $4 million a year. That will cut into, but not eleminate, the $5.6 million surplus the athletic department currently generates- and if the program becomes more successful under Saban, could bring in more money.

Nick Saban to Leave Dolphins for Alabama
By STEVEN WINE (AP Sports Writer)
From Associated Press
January 03, 2007 3:47 PM EST
DAVIE, Fla. - Nick Saban is 'Bama bound. Ending five weeks of denials and two days of deliberation, Saban accepted the Alabama coaching job and abandoned his bid to rebuild the Miami Dolphins after only two seasons.

Miami owner Wayne Huizenga said he was informed of the decision in a meeting Wednesday at Saban's house. Huizenga announced the departure at a news conference that Saban didn't attend.

"It is what it is," Huizenga said, borrowing Saban's pet phrase. "I'm not upset, because it's more involved than what you think."

Since late November, Saban had issued frequent, angry public denials of interest in moving to Tuscaloosa. Huizenga said the change of heart wasn't driven by money, and Saban never sought a raise or contract extension.

He sure moves around a lot. But people would have been more pissed if he had gone to Auburn.

He did have some rationale for making the decision - sounds like he really does like working with and modeling kids 18-22 vs. pros, which is kind of nice.

I've only seen him in person up close once. Very small guy (saw him at an LSU game a couple of years ago.) Can't be taller than 5'6 or so.

One thing that does kind of annoy me is that this will come out of tuition, and it is a helluva lot of money (yes, I know he's taking a pay cut to go to Alabama.) But a lot of that money could be used for scholarships, research, med research at UAB, etc.
