MADRID (Reuters) - Former England captain David Beckham will leave Real Madrid at the end of the season and sign a five-year deal for MLS side Los Angeles Galaxy, he told Reuters on Thursday.

"This week Real Madrid asked me to make a decision regarding my future and the offer to extend my contract for a further two seasons," Beckham told Reuters.

"After discussing several options with my family and my advisors to either stay here in Madrid or join other major British and European teams I have decided to join LA Galaxy and play in the MLS from August this year.

"I would like to thank supporters and the people of Madrid who have made my family and I so welcome in my time here making this an extremely difficult decision to make.

I saw one place say that the contract may be for $250 million over 5 years.

One thing for sure: this will make the Galaxy like the Chicago Bulls of the 90s - everywhere they went games would sell out just because people wanted to see Jordan. Beckham will draw a lot of people to the games.

Will have to wait and see if he's going to help improving the Galaxy. He's on the downside of his career but he still has about 3-4 years left.

I heard on the radio that the $250 million number includes all endorsements and incentives so it isn't just his salary.

This will create a buzz in the MLS and will sell tickets, but Beckham is overrated and probably isn't much better, if any, than some of the US' top stars.

I heard someone on the radio mentioned that the $250 million comes out to just about a million a week.

Beckham is not one of the greatest of all time. He is a very popular player with lots of cross-over appeal, but he is definitely not one of the greatest of all time from England, much less the world.
