Cool Harry Potter Books and Movies

SPOILER ALERT:

This thread will discuss all plot details of the first 6 Harry Potter books and first 4 movies. When Book 7 comes out in July, we'll either discuss the details here or start a new thread.

I thought I'd start a Harry Potter thread to discuss the current book and movie (#7 Deathly Hallows and #5 Order of the Pheonix respectively, both due out within 10 days of each other in mid to late July '07), or any other HP books or movies. I am very well versed in all the Potter books, and would be interested to trade answers to questions or theories on what we will find in Book 7 with any of you.

Here's a starter question: Are you convinced that Snape is working for Voldemort (that he is on the Dark Side)? I am not. How bout you?

With regards to Snape, I'm willing for there to be some work done on Dumbledore's behalf. This has continuously been the case, so it wouldn't surprise me if Snape's treachery weren't some planned bit of reversal that Dumbledore had set up in order to give Harry a fighting chance against Voldemort.

That said, it'd make Dumbledore an archetypical Christ figure (in an odd way) and stories are filled with them, now. Another thing it would do is that this provides some security to the reader who might have otherwise worried that evil ever had a chance at winning over good.

So with that in mind, I think it'd be twice as cool if Rowling DIDN'T make Snape someone working for Dumbledore, but Harry still won.

I think Snape had to kill Dumbledore because of the Unbreakable Vow he made to Narcissa regarding Draco. I think Snape made an unbreakable vow to Dumbledore to deceive Voldemort until whatever end comes. I think Dumbledore was begging Snape to kill him so his cover wouldn't be blown ("Severus, Please!"). Dumbledore said it himself when he was trying to retrieve the horcrux, when he told Harry that Harry was more important to the cause than himself.

I agree with you. I think taht Dumbledore and Snape planned this to aid Harry. Also, if Snape was with Voldemort, he could have killed Harry at the end of book 6.

This was my interpretation also. I find it hard to believe that book 7 is going to cover enough ground to finish off the series.

It has to end it. Rowling is determined not to spin this into a 12-book+ series like Tim LaHaye did with the Left Behind series. Rowling wrote the final chapter of Book 7 like 5 years ago and has kept it in a safe place, just so she knew that she would get to that point in 7 books. I think all the extra info in Book 5 and all the Horcrux stuff in Book 6 will make more sense when we read 7. We shall see.

Thumbs up

Thanks Ben, that really helps put things into perspective. My wife and I always buy two of the current books since neither of us like to share while were reading our Potter. Then we donate them to the local kids library. We've been waiting till the last one so we can buy some really cool seven book leather set when it comes out. yummy!

Thanks for the kind words Thresher. I'd recommend getting Book 7 at Costco if you have a membership. It will be 784 pages long and comes out July 21st. Barnes and Noble is pre-selling it for $21, while Costco will be selling it for $18.99. Costco always has tons of them, so you won't have to wait in crazy lines elsewhere. The list price is $34.99.

I just saw the HP 5 trailer (On Spider-Man 3, which took in a record $150 mmillion on its opening weekend). It looks good and dark. I'm surprised these kids have made it through 5 films, and haven't had to be replaced by actors more their in-the-book ages.

It's been said that a "significant character" will die in the next book. I've been assuming it will be Harry, possibly finishing off Voldemort in the process. That would suck, but Rowling would be able to keep her wish that nobody ever writes sequels, etc.

I'm sure a "significant character" will die off in this book just like Sirrius in Book 5 (which really dissappointed me, Rowling developed that character so much, and gave us readers hope that Harry may eventually have a father figure, as well as someone to live with other than the Dursleys and then he dies!), and Dumbledore in Book 6. My sincere wish is that I can get through Book 7 in time to read the ending myself, and not have it ruined for me!

We will be locking the doors and not turning on the computer or tv till the book is done. Should be one loooong weekend. And yes, we're members of Costco, so we'll be there! Thanks for the tip!
