Paris Hilton Checks Into LA County Jail
http://www.wsbtv.com/entertainment/1...306042007&ts=H
LYNWOOD, Calif. -- Hours after strolling the red carpet in a strapless black dress, Paris Hilton traded her designer duds for a jail-issued jumpsuit. The 26-year-old heiress checked into the Century Regional Detention Facility in Lynwood just after 11:30 p.m. Sunday. She's expected to serve three-weeks for violating her probation in an alcohol-related reckless driving case. Hilton surrendered to sheriff's deputies after making a surprise visit to the MTV Movie Awards in the afternoon. "I am trying to be strong right now," she told reporters on the red carpet. "I'm ready to face my sentence. Even though this is a really hard time, I have my family, my friends and my fans to support me, and that's really helpful." At the MTV Movie Awards presentation, Hilton was skewered by host Sarah Silverman. The comedian delivered a string of crude one-liners at Hilton's expense. Hilton was emotionless in the cutaway shots. When Silverman announced that Hilton was about to go to jail, the crowd broke into cheers and applause. When Hilton checked into jail, Sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore said Hilton was easy to work with. "Her demeanor was helpful. She was focused, she was cooperative," he said. Hilton turned herself in at the Men's Central Jail in downtown Los Angeles just after 10:30 p.m., then was escorted to the all women's facility in Lynwood, where she was booked, fingerprinted and issued a jail uniform, Whitmore said. She also was given her first meal: cereal, bread and juice. So far, Hilton does not have a cellmate, Whitmore said. The "Simple Life" star will be housed in the "special needs" unit of the 13-year-old jail, separate from most of its 2,200 inmates. The unit contains 12 two-person cells reserved for police officers, public officials, celebrities and other high-profile inmates. Like other inmates in that unit, Hilton will take her meals in her cell and will be allowed outside the 12-foot-by-8-foot space for at least an hour each day to shower, watch TV in the day room, participate in outdoor recreation or talk on the telephone. No cell phones or BlackBerrys are permitted in the facility, even for visitors. The jail, a two-story concrete building next to train tracks and beneath a bustling freeway, has been an all-female facility since March 2006. It's located in an industrial area about five miles southeast of downtown Los Angeles. "I did have a choice to go to a pay jail," Hilton said Sunday, without giving details. "But I declined because I feel like the media portrays me in a way that I'm not and that's why I wanted to go to county, to show that I can do it and I'm going to be treated like everyone else. I'm going to do the time, I'm going to do it the right way." When she was sentenced May 4, Superior Court Judge Michael T. Sauer ruled that she would not be allowed any work release, furloughs or use of an alternative jail or electronic monitoring in lieu of jail. Sometimes stars are allowed to do their time in a jail of their choosing. In such cases they pay a daily room-and-board fee to the smaller jails, which afford them more privacy and comfort. Cop-slapping actress Zsa Zsa Gabor, for example, served three days behind bars in 1990 at the El Segundo jail near the Los Angeles International Airport. She paid $85 a day. On Saturday, about 15 photographers, reporters and television crews staked out the entrances to the jail waiting for the celebutante's arrival. Authorities had also cordoned off a grassy area outside the facility for the media. She had until Tuesday to report. On Sunday, about a dozen photographers and television crews were at the Lynwood facility when she arrived in an unmarked SUV. Video captured by celebrity news site TMZ.com showed Hilton inside the vehicle with her mother, Kathy. Hilton's publicist, Elliot Mintz, said he spoke with Kathy Hilton after she returned from the jail. "She told me it was very emotional," Mintz said. "She also said that she feels this will be a time when Paris will be able to think and reflect and to spend time alone to learn from the experience because in Paris' life she's never alone - there's always a constant chatter around her." Officers arrested Hilton in Hollywood on Sept. 7. In January, she pleaded no contest to the reckless-driving charge and was sentenced to 36 months' probation, alcohol education and $1,500 in fines. She was pulled over by California Highway Patrol on Jan. 15. Officers informed Hilton she was driving on a suspended license and she signed a document acknowledging she was not to drive. She then was pulled over by sheriff's deputies on Feb. 27, at which time she was charged with violating her probation. |

"Paris Hilton was released from jail early Thursday due to an unspecified medical condition after serving only three days of her sentence."
I never realized that "makeup withdrawal" was a medical condition. Or, maybe it's ADD (Attention Deprivation Disorder). ![]() |

TMZ.com said Hilton was crying and couldn't sleep or eat. It said Hilton complained that her cell is "freezing cold." Hilton did have two visitors on her second day in jail -- her psychiatrist and her lawyer. Her lawyer said she was doing well. Richard Hutton reporters that Hilton used "this time to reflect on her life, to see what she can do to make the world better." |

http://tv.msn.com/tv/article.aspx?news=264705>1=7703
Hilton Released From Jail, Reassigned to House Arrest Jun 7, 3:36 PM EST The Associated Press LOS ANGELES -- After only three days behind bars, Paris Hilton traded a 12-by-8-foot cell for her 2,700-square-foot Hollywood Hills home when she was released early Thursday because of an unspecified medical condition. Hilton will be under home confinement, wearing an electronic monitoring ankle bracelet, for the remaining 40 days of her sentence for violating probation in a reckless driving case. The celebrity inmate was sent home from the L.A. County jail's Lynwood lockup shortly after 2 a.m., a stunning reduction to a sentence that already had been cut from 45 to 23 days because of "good behavior." Another two days were lopped off the original 45 since she checked in late Sunday and left early Thursday, earning credit for five days served. Video: Outrage over Hilton's 'new' sentence | Paris out of jail Commentary: Why did Paris get her way? Timeline of events since Hilton's arrest No details were available on the nature of Hilton's medical condition. Sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore refused to answer questions about whether it was physical or psychological. Hilton's lawyer and publicist did not return calls seeking comment. "I can't specifically talk about the medical situation other than to say that yes, it played a part in this," Whitmore said at an early morning news conference outside the jail. The decision to release Hilton was made by Sheriff Lee Baca, according to the Probation Department. A deputy at the sheriff's information bureau said there would be no comment. On Sunday night, after a surprise red-carpet appearance at the MTV Movie Awards, Hilton surrendered to authorities with little fanfare. "I am trying to be strong right now," she told reporters at the time. "I'm ready to face my sentence. Even though this is a really hard time, I have my family, my friends and my fans to support me, and that's really helpful." Hilton was housed in the "special needs" unit of the 13-year-old jail, separate from most of its 2,200 inmates.
Paris Hilton ordered to court, may be headed back to jail
http://www.azcentral.com/news/articl...il0607-ON.html
Hours after she was released early Thursday from custody, Paris Hilton was ordered to appear in court on Friday for a hearing on whether she will stay out of jail. Hilton left county jail after spending barely more than three days in a solitary cell, an early release that raised questions about whether the wealthy get special treatment from a star-struck judicial system. Responding to a motion filed by the city attorney's office, which prosecuted Hilton, Judge Michael T. Sauer ordered Hilton to appear for a 9 a.m. hearing regarding her early release. Sauer expressed concern about whether his court had jurisdiction to hear a challenge to its own sentence of Hilton. He also told Assistant City Atty. Dan Jefferies that he wanted to be sure to give enough time to the other side to respond to the motion. "You're holding the court's feet to the fire trying to rush through things," he said. "I don't want a circus." The decision to hold another hearing was the latest act in a day of frenzy over the Hilton release, which drew immediate criticism from prosecutors, jail guards and community activists that she was being treated better than other inmates. Hilton had been ordered to serve a 45-day jail sentence for violating her probation, but the term was decreased to 23 days for good behavior before she ever stepped into the women's jail in Lynwood. The Sheriff's Department caught the media off-guard by sending home the 26-year-old heiress and legendary party girl in the predawn hours. She is now supposed to spend 40 days confined to her Spanish-style Hollywood Hills home and will have to wear a new piece of bling: an electronic ankle bracelet to monitor her movements. "The problem here is that there is a medical issue and it isn't wise to keep a person in jail with her problem over an extended period of time and let the problem get worse," said Sheriff Lee Baca in a telephone interview. "In my opinion, justice is being served by the decision to have her serve her time at home. She would still be in the county jail if it were not for the medical advice." Baca refused to discuss Hilton's medical issues or whether they were psychological or physical. In recent days, Hilton reportedly was visited by her psychiatrist to help deal with the trauma of confinement. The release set off a round of condemnation, but Baca dismissed the criticism that Hilton had received preferential treatment. "My message to those who don't like celebrities is that punishing celebrities more than the average American is not justice," he said. Hilton surrendered to authorities late Sunday night after an appearance at the MTV Movie Awards. Officials credited her with five days in jail, though she actually served barely more than three days. As reports of Hilton's release spread on the Internet, journalists flooded the street in front of Hilton's home, hoping to get a picture of the socialite. In a prepared statement, Hilton thanked the Sheriff's Department for "treating me fairly and professionally." "I am going to serve the remaining 40 days of my sentence," she said. "I have learned a great deal from this ordeal and hope that others have learned from my mistakes." Shocked officials condemned the release. Earlier, Los Angeles City Attorney Rocky Delgadillo, whose office prosecuted Hilton, said he was concerned by the Sheriff's Department decision and might challenge it. "Today, I was extremely troubled to learn that the Sheriff's Department has decided to release Ms. Hilton from custody just three days after she was admitted to county jail," Delgadillo said. "My office was not advised of this action. We learned of it this morning through news reports, just like everyone else. Had we been provided with the proper notification, we would have opposed the decision on legal grounds." Delgadillo said in a statement that the explanation that she was released to house arrest because of a medical condition was "puzzling." "Los Angeles County Jail medical facilities are well-equipped to deal with medical situations involving inmates," he said. Allan Parachini, a court public information officer, said Sauer, the Superior Court judge who had sentenced Hilton to 45 days and ruled out home incarceration, was told Wednesday that Hilton would be released early. Sauer "reaffirmed the terms of the sentence he imposed May 4. He did not concur in any early release," Parachini said. Steve Remige, president of the union that represents the department's nearly 9,000 deputies, said he was upset by the decision to release Hilton. "My concern is that the public's confidence in a fair judicial system in Los Angeles County has been eroded by the fact that the sheriff has given an early release to Miss Hilton," said Remige, president of the Association for Los Angeles County Deputy Sheriffs and a deputy for 29 years. Remige noted that the Hilton decision came several months after the department allegedly instructed a deputy to remove inflammatory comments from an arrest report that actor Mel Gibson allegedly made during a DUI arrest last year. "After this latest incident, outward appearances seem to be that the sheriff does lean toward favoritism of the rich and famous," Remige said. "I've never heard of a case where an inmate with mental problems has been released," Remige said. "Every jail facility has a medical unit attached to it. If a medical condition arises that those units can't handle we have a jail ward at County-USC Hospital. I find it hard to believe that the needs of one inmate could not be met by our medical services division." Najee Ali, director of Project Islamic Hope, criticized Hilton's release. "Basically, it is a slap in the face to the justice system and to every inmate who is serving their time as ordered," Ali said. "The Sheriff's Department just caved into the celebrity power of Paris Hilton and her family's wealth from around the world." Ali is calling for the county Board of Supervisors to conduct an independent investigation. "There are thousands of people who have medical conditions in jail and don't get that kind of consideration," Ali said. "The reason the sheriff gave for her release is ridiculous," Ali said. "It seems like a double standard." The issue of Hilton's incarceration has been fodder for tabloid journalists for months. She violated her probation by driving with a suspended license. Sauer sentenced her to 45 days in jail and suggested she serve the entire sentence. Hilton pleaded no contest to driving under the influence after she was pulled over in Hollywood on Sept. 7 by Los Angeles Police Department officers for speeding and making an illegal left turn. After she failed a field sobriety test, Hilton had her license suspended but continued to drive, violating the terms of her probation. She was pulled over three times by officers from three different law enforcement agencies during her suspension. She violated her probation by driving with a suspended license. Sauer sentenced her to 45 days in jail and suggested she serve the entire sentence. But after jail officials reviewed her case, they decided she would receive significantly less time. Reaction at the Los Angeles traffic court where Hilton was sentenced was one of outrage. "In the end, money and popularity won out," said Keith Henry, 24, a court clerk. "That's how it seems.... We were like, 'OK, she came here to visit but that was it.' " Henry said many people in the courthouse were pleased that Sauer had been firm in his sentencing of the hotel heiress. "Most in the courthouse were actually shocked that the judged pushed the sentence and wasn't influenced by paparazzi," he said. Even if Hilton were confined to her house, Henry said, it's not the same as jail. "She's got a nice house," he said. "She can invite her friends over. So what type of punishment is that actually?" Gerald Allen, 46, a city employee who was at the court with a friend paying a traffic ticket, said he thought her early release was a mockery of the justice system. "I think that the medical issue is something they concocted to get her out of jail," Allen said. "The medical issue didn't keep her from driving. You can drive around at night time with your medical condition but you can't sit in a jail cell and do nothing? ... I believe in a lot of cases the rich are above the law and this is another example of that. It's an obvious case of the wealthy getting preferential treatment when it comes to the judicial system. To me, it clearly shows you can commit a crime, hire your million-dollar legal team and they get you off the hook." |

There will be a hearing on Friday, but the early word is that she needs some psychiatric medicine that the prison could not provide for her. That does not sound too plausable. They probably dispense all kinds of psychatriac drugs in prisons. Except money and attention.

L.A. City Attorney Rocky Delgadillo wants Paris Hilton's freedom revoked—now. He says the decision by the L.A. County Sheriff's office to release Hilton at 2 a.m. Thursday morning after serving just three of her 23 day jail term amounts to contempt of court. The heiress sports a Tracy Morgan-style ankle bracelet that monitors her whereabouts and drinking, but Delgadillo, known as a crusader for tougher treatment of celebrity screwups, says that specifically violates judge Michael T. Sauer's orders that "no electronic monitoring" be used in lieu of jail time. "Paris Hilton should be treated the same as everyone else," a flabbergasted Delgadillo told Radar late yesterday. "No one is above the law." He says the decision to let Paris out was solely that of the sheriff's office and adds that a motion and a proper hearing should have taken place before any decision for release was made. "If I had been consulted, I wouldn't have done it," he tells Radar. And the alleged "medical emergency" behind the sudden release? "She was crying a lot ... she was depressed," the medical provider tells the New York Post today. "There is a top medical facility there [at the L.A. County jail]," Delgadillo says. Hilton is also being credited with serving five days, counting Sunday night and Thursday morning, although her real time amounts to more like three days. "On any give day, a thousand female inmates are in custody. Why is one case, out of the blue, treated any different than them?" Steve Remige, president of the Association of Los Angeles Deputy Sheriffs, says in the Post. L.A. County Supervisor Mike Antonovich adds, "You're dealing with a spoiled brat acting out to get her way instead of serving her time as was adjudicated by the courts." Delgadillo demanded and got a hearing at noon EST today before judge Sauer and plans to ask that Hilton be sent back to the grey bar hotel. "Her release sends the wrong message," he says |

Honestly, with all the crying and whatnot, if I were the judge I'd revoke the "good behavior" status and make her serve the full 45 days as well.
Give her plenty of time to dry up those tears... and hey, if she chooses to starve herself in protest, well... then at least she'd have something in common with folks who starve because they have no other choice (and she'd probably lose enough weight to catch up with her boney sidekick Nicole Ritchie.) |

The big issue right now is with what the sheriff has done. I am sure Paris was complaining- that would not be a surprise. Or that her shrink would say that she was distressed and distraught (the same shrink got a delay in a previous trial over some arguement when the shrink made that claim- Paris was so stressed over the case she was seen out partying for three straight nights prior to the trial! I cannot imagine being subjected to all that! The horrors!).
It was the Sheriff who said he would be releasing her on this questionable "medical issue". In his ruling, the judge stated that Paris should spend her time in jail- and not under "house arrest" at home. Then when the judge ordered her to appear this morning, the sheriff said she did not actually show up but could do it over the phone. Judge was not happy with that and ordered the sheriff's office to go and pick her up. They are now waiting. There is talk of charges against the sheriff. Probably going to be an oj- style coverage of her entire trip to the courthouse via live helicopter shots. |

Visited by her psychiatrist to help deal with the trauma of confinement? During the first 3 days? Has she never lived alone? Done anything alone? Had ANY limits or stuff taken from her? I, as a psychiatrist, call BS.
I wouldn't be surprised if she goes back, and I wouldn't be surprised if she stays out. It's a big media circus, and the Sheriff probably just wanted his 15 min of fame. H <---wants to be Paris' psychiatrist. Lots $$ there. But then again, she may not be worth the hassle. |
