Just saw Beowulf
It was alright...
The animation was beyond excellent....there were actually times that I forgot that they were animated. Movie scared my poor wife half to death.... My arm (The one she was holding onto the entire time) is now still numb... I kid! But...seriously...she was holding onto it very tightly. Even I jumped at times.

The story was ok....and from what I remember of the book it follows the book somewhat.
It was typical hero vs monster type story. There were a fair amount of cheesy lines in the movie. I would give it a B- movie. Decent, but if I had the chance, I would probably see it when it got to DVD. |

It's digitally enhanced rather than full digital, which I believe means that it was filmed then just animated over. I'm sure that helps to make it seem more real.

The movie is 100% digital. The motion capture technique just uses human movement as reference to make the characters seem more real. The actual graphics though are still computer rendered. Anyways, I saw the movie tonite. It was alright. I enjoyed it as an action movie. According to Roger Ebert the movie is more of a satire of the poem than an attempt at a true screenplay of it. That would help explain some of those "cheesy" lines. Personally, I thought they were funny and so were the other comedic moments in the movie ( The entire scene with nude Beowulf .) The graphics, as mentioned, are phenomenal. Hands down the best I've seen in anything. |

Everything is computer rendered, but it doesn't make the movie "100% digital" in the same respect as movies such as Shrek and the Incredibles. You could argue that but most digital artists consider 100 percent digital as creating a character from the ground up in digital format, from creating the skeleton and skin to lighting and finally animating the character. However since the movie was filmed first then digitized, it's widely not considered 100% digital, which is why they label it as digitally enhanced, rather than fully digital. Either way, I want to see it. But I'd prefer to see the filmed version of Angelina Jolie naked ![]() |

I saw it last week in IMAX 3D, and I have to agree: the visuals were pretty to look at, but I really think that without the IMAX and without the 3D, I probably wouldn't have enjoyed the movie all that much. They didn't really "butcher" the story or anything, per se, but it's not entirely accurate either; I thought it was bizarre that they would go to lengths changing the story around to make it more palatable for moviegoing audiences, but still leave in some of the plot holes and unanswered questions.
For what it was, though, a well-crafted, mostly brainless, extremely straightforward fantasy action movie, it was decent. Parts of it were slow, and I actually didn't like the comedic elements in it because I felt like it made the movie seem unsure of itself (it took itself quite seriously one moment, then made a mockery of itself the next). Some cheesy and/or over the top moments (e.g. Beowulf and the sea monster's eye, Grendel's mother in golden stilettos), some forced melodrama, some pretty impressive action sequences (the dragon)... All in all, I gave it a 6.5/10.
