Tiger's wife to donate damages to cancer charity

Quote:
DUBLIN, Ireland -- An Irish magazine apologized to Tiger Woods's wife Elin Nordegren on Friday and agreed to pay the former model "substantial" damages after it published fake nude pictures during the 2006 Ryder Cup at the K Club.

"The false and deeply offensive article in The Dubliner magazine, with the accompanying photograph of another woman wrongly claimed to be me, caused great personal distress to me and my family," Nordegren said in a statement.

Nordegren did not disclose how much she had received in damages in settlement of her libel action brought against the magazine in November 2006.

She said the damages would be donated to cancer support charities in memory of Heather Clarke, the late wife of British golfer Darren Clarke.

The statement from Nordegren said Trevor White, publisher of The Dubliner, had apologized unreservedly for the article.

"The story was cheap, tasteless and deliberately offensive," it quoted White as saying in the magazine's apology.

White also described the article, entitled "Ryder Cup Filth For Dublin?", as utterly and comprehensively false, profoundly hurtful and shameful.

"The article was accompanied by a nude photograph of a woman falsely identified as being Elin Woods and the article falsely stated other such photographs were to be found on Internet porn sites," he said.

"There are no such photographs of Ms. Nordegren Woods on Internet sites or elsewhere. Ms. Nordegren Woods has never posed, or been photographed, nude."

The magazine also apologized for its initial defense that the article was intended as a satirical parody, saying instead it was a "cheap, vulgar lie which was unforgivably insulting to Ms. Nordegren Woods".

You know...I know that the Woods family has more money than the average bear....but I think that's still cool that she's donating the money she got from a legit lawsuit to a charity.

Agreed...it gives me hope that their baby, although a celebrity child, will have normalcy and will not be raised with a sense of entitlement.

Yeah, but I'd still think she can and should do more to help the less fortunate. She should actually take nekkid pics of herself and then auction them off and donate that money to charity also. As a wife of a celebrity it is part of her obligation to society.

heh, the power of respect.

If you noticed papparazzi has left Tiger woods well enough alone. He requested it early on, and to my knowledge, the press has agreed to cover him only in his tournaments, and interviews, and rarely say anything defamatory, parodical, or unflattering towards him. I dont know what it is, but Tiger Woods commands the respect of the media.

The publishing of the fake nudes IS irresponsible on the tabloid's part, but the way they apologized profusely may have something to do with her being the wife of Tiger Woods.

I think this is true, but I also believe it's the way he lives his life. If you give them something to talk about, they will talk about it - and what you put in your trash can too. He isn't out drinking, partying, or what have you so there isn't much they can say that would keep the papparazzi after him night and day like others we could (and don't have to ) mention.

There are plenty of celebrities out there that are able to stay out of the tabloids because they lead relatively normal lives and keep their public exposure to a minimum.

It was a very easy gesture for the Woods family to make but is still a welcome sight in this day and age.

Are you new to the internet, or have you just not been looking?

Good for her! She deserved that money and much more for her humiliation. She also turned a bad situation into a admirable one by donating to charity.

Actually, I think they did implement a testing policy for performance enhancing drugs during the past year. Not sure what the frequency or terms are for the policy.
