NFL Wildcard Weekend

I'm up late getting my place ready for a bbq that I'm throwing for the Chargers game tomorrow. I watched both games today and in both cases the team I wanted to win ended up losing. I'm a sucker for the story that pulls at the heart strings. However it didn't seem to prevail today.

I wanted the Skins to win, even though it was apparent that the Seahawks are a damn good team. I hope that the Redskins players know that they honored Sean Taylor's memory so magnificently, and that they have nothing to regret. I had no idea who Sean Taylor was as a person until I heard all the stories from the rest of the players talk about how inspirational he was. Even though they didn't make it further in the playoffs, I hope that they realize they did a great thing by winning their last 4 games to get into the playoffs, riding the arm of a quarterback who hadn't had a start in the NFL in 10 YEARS. That's some crazy stuff right there. The Skins played great, and they almost had it, however the Seahawks are just too strong.

I also watched most of the Steelers game. I have a great friend who is a Steelers fan and so I always root for them, even though I know that most Steelers fans hate the Chargers (on account of how we pwned them in 94 ). There was some poor play calling at the end otherwise they would have won it. On the other side though, David Garrard had one of the most clutch plays by a QB of the year. 32 yard run on a 4th and 2 with less than 2 minutes to play. That's so clutch. They deserved to win. Better luck next year Steelers.

Sunday's games should be good ones as well. I will be mostly rooting for Tampa because Sheli Manning is a bitch I like Jeff Garcia because he's an old quarterback finally getting a shot, and doing great with his opportunity. However I have another good friend who is a Giants fan from Jersey, and so if the Giants win I'll be happy for him.

Finally there are the Titans vs. the Chargers. Lots of people are calling this the "lock of the weekend" as they think the Chargers are too strong for the Titans. However, those people are not Chargers fans. Chargers fans like me know that there is no such thing as a "sure thing". Sure we think that the Chargers are a much better team than the Titans, however we squandered 2 "sure things" in recent years. The Chargers whole season has been about getting back into the playoffs and redeeming themselves. They certainly have the ability, and they certainly have the motivation. It's now up to the Chargers players to see if they have the mental fortitude to win this game. If they play their game, and if they avoid the mental mistakes, they will win this game.

That said, I also think that if Vince Young plays the Chargers should be able to shut him down. However I think that if Kerry Collins plays, it'll be a tougher chance. However if Phillip Rivers plays like pro-bowl Phillip Rivers, and not Ryan Leaf-Phillip Rivers, then it doesn't matter who starts at QB.

What about you guys. Anyone else watching or care about Wild Card weekend? Or are all of you fans of the 1 and 2 seeds?

I'm sure your BBQ was a great success since the Bolts are going round 2. Though I am a true Dallas fan I've lived in SD since '86 and love the Chargers in the AFC and was there to root them on. Was getting disappointed as the Titans owned them in the first half, but the Bolts came back strong in the second. Loved the LT leap and second push for their final TD was too awesome. The second round should be quite interesting as the Colts want this rematch. I hate NYG as well but I was rooting for them againts NE but, I hope my Boys can take the Giants for the third time this year and make it to the SB. We'll see.

I'm still a little surprised at the Steelers. I thought that they'd win.

I don't really like the Redskins - though, much respect for them. Still thought that the Seahawks had it though, so no surprise there.

I'm not a Chargers fan, so maybe it's safe for me to call it a lock. And yeah, I'm with you on the Giants. I'm not a fan of many people, but I am definitely an anti-fan of any Manning spawn.

Go Bolts!

I have to go for the Chargers....or else my students would kill me...

Just kidding! I actually do like the Chargers, they are a really classy team and I'd like LT to win a superbowl.

I don't think this'll stop anything though - the better you idiot-proof a system, the more impressive the idiot becomes.

Yeah guys it was a good bbq because the Chargers were able to pull it out. Vince Young played extremely well, and being that he's only in his second year I'm sure his future is bright. He's an amazing athlete without a doubt. I'm just glad the Chargers were able to prevail this time.

The playoffs are looking good for next week. My only bummer is that I have to make breakfast for 15 people since we're a 10 am start. I'm better at lunch but I have a few tricks up my sleeve.

I don't know if Cheapie is still around but I know he is a Colts fan. Hey buddy, are you ready for some football!?!
