For those of you who haven't seen this movie...stop reading! I'm going to ask something about the end of the film...so if you haven't seen the movie and you don't want it spoiled...press "back" now!...if you've seen it, or you don't care read on...
For starters...I think the movie was awesome. I've heard different opinions...but personally I think its a great movie. The kung-fu was cool...but the story and the scenery and everything was just great. It's about time for a movie to come out with some thought put into it. I was intrigued by the sword ability to bring out the worst of people. Interesting how something good can become something so bad...how somethings we've grown to treasure in our lives can begin to rule our lives. Anyways...that wasn't the point of this post...I want to ask the simple question..."Why did she jump?" I totally did not expect the ending like that...but the more I thought about it...the more I liked it...but I'm still not sure why I like it...so please take a shot at it...and try and answer that...I'm interested in hearing people's ideas, "Why did she jump?"

I like the movie as a comedy, but anyways, I think she felt "trapped" by her life situation and saddened by the death of Master Li and her "nanny". Just my guess.

Well I may have to wait till DVD, unless it goes into wider release. It's only playing at the Uptown, which I will not go to.
Its a smarmy run down theater art house that caters to smarmy snotnosed pseudo intellectual city folks that on the whole, should be shot on site.

There was this scene where the barbarian told her about a fable of someone making a wish and jumping... and that anyone who can survive the jump would get whatever he wished for.

Funny you should say that, because while I was there for the Vikings game, I took in a movie at ye olde Uptown, for a little flick you might know as State and Main. It truly is a den of the smarmy! Then again, it had a pretty impressive roster of upcoming movies. Perhaps it's time to join the intellectual pseudo-elite, Larry. You're missing a fantastic flick that MUST be seen on the big screen to be properly appreciated. |

she knew she would die...right? Someone over here at work said after all she'd been through...she knew her heart wasn't pure and that wouldn't survive.

bah...it was the whole point of getting the big screen and the home theatre setup! Though I hear it will be in wider release, at least around here. Uptown gets all the cool movies, but I just can't stand the place. |

Nope, don't believe so. Although I still haven't had a chance to read the novel it's based on. ![]() |

yeah, i don't think its a dream either. it has to do with the fable about if you love someone and they jump off the bridge and you make a wish, then if your love is true, then your wish will come true. and i guess you could wish for anything, but most likely if you love someone that is about to jump off a bridge you wish that you will be together forever, or what have you. and so, the guy made the wish about being with her forever (or whatever it was, i can't exactly remember,) and she jumped to see if his love was true. and i think she probably wanted to jump because she knew her family would never love her again after the bad girl that she had been. so if her lover didn't actually love her, then she had nothing to live for anyway. what do you think? btw, i know most of this is just rambling, but i couldn't think of how to say it in normal english. sorry.

I thought the movie was amazing! The whole movie had this dream-like state to it. I really enjoyed the end of the movie though. I think the girl wanted a simple life with the man and for her mistakes to be undone. I thought it was perfect to let the audience decide what happened at the end. I can't wait to experience it again.

you mean she actually jumped to die (or see if she dies)? I thought she just flew off to beat up more bad guys. Having been the bad girls she's been, I thought she decided to live a more appropriate life and become like Chow Yun Fatt. Well, it's open to interpretation (for me at least).

Well... if she survives, she gets her man (the barbarian). If she doesn't, she also gets her man (Fatt)!

cool ideas
Interesting how so many people can get a different message from the same movie. I suppose that's a part of what makes the movie so interesting.
I thought she just couldn't live with all that she'd done. In spite of being with the person she wanted to be with...she couldn't reconcile the path of destruction she'd left...ruining the lives of people that were genuinely trying to help her. I think Fat was testing her throughtout the movie...she kept failing and he kept giving her another chance...till finally it cost him his life. Then she realized what her immaturity had done...but by then it was too late...couldn't live with that. |

Just another interpretation ...
My boyfriend and I were discussing the ending last night, and I think pretty much everyone here agrees on the remorse issue.
Remember when Michelle Yeoh tells the brat (Jen Yu?) that all she and Chow Yun Fat wanted was to be together, and Jen keeps sabotaging that? Soooo I propose that another reason she jumped off the bridge is because she felt she had no right to be with the one she loved, since she had kept Michelle Yeoh and Chow Yun Fat from being together. |

sorry, just had to get in and say how bloody well done this movie was. the sets, the story, the action - everything was outstanding and totally exceeded my expectations.
i was really turned off by the idiots in the theater who were snickering during some of the action scenes. it's a movie folks, fantasy happens here. if people want to float around tree tops, they're gonna. ![]() LPM, do yourself a favor and go see it. put on your khakis, sandals and structure-wear and blend in with them. just turn your damned cell phone off ![]() only disapointing thing about this movie was when i left and i couldn't fly. same thing happened after matrix too. total bummer ![]()

As much as I enjoyed the movie... am I the only one who thinks that the plot/story is a wee bit lacking? It feels so... rushed, as if they were trying to cram 4 hours of stuff into 2. But I do agree that the backgrounds/etc were excellent. Quote:

the movie ruled, i'm definately going to go see it again at a matinee so i can really see everything, you always see stuff that you missed the second time. especially with a movie in subtitles, you dont get a chance to just watch everyone act, instead you get caught up in reading the translation. there was definately a lot of symbolism up for interpretation, i'm not even going to try to break it down for you guys since i saw the movie a few weeks ago.
i agree with the thought that this is NOT a dream, she was jumping because it is a common theme in fairy tales and fables from back in the day that people believed in what they were feeling or believed in enough to commit suicide. it was once acceptable for someone to do this, and while it is noble, not too many people would go for that nowadays. |
