Cardinals are scaring me, and have been for a while

Vegas is giving the odds to a Yankees/Cards WS matchup. People in this town are die hard fanatics with a strong hint of fanboyism, so my comments aren't received well here.

Here are some of the stats I compiled:

The only team in the NL playoff that the cards have had a winning record against: Dodgers

The only team they played in the AL playoffs are the Twins, and they are 1-2 against them.

Number of RS games since ASG: 71
Number of games decided by 1 run: 26
Number of games decided by 3 runs or less: 44

Number of games won since ASG: 42
Number of games won by 3 runs or less: 25
Number of games won by 1 run: 14
Number of games won by scoring 4 runs or fewer: 17
Number of games won by 5 or more runs (out of reach): 13

Number of RS games lost since ASG: 29
Number of games lost by 3 runs or less: 19
Number of games lost by 1 run: 12
Number of games lost by scoring 4 runs or fewer: 23
Number of games lost by 5 or more runs (out of reach): 8
Number of games shutout since ASG: 5 (out of 10 total)

So you claim the cardinals have a great record since the all star break and kept getting win after win. I wanted to compile some stats to see who was full of _it: me or the rest of the fanboys.

To me, the worrying signs are that out of 71 games, they've scored 4 runs or less a total of 40 times. With there being 44 games decided by 3 run differentials or less, With some major additions to the roster before the deadline, they were still shutout just as many times in the second half as they were in the first half. Of those 44 games within reach, 33 of them were lacking in offense with the cards scoring 4 or less. (Which also boasts great cardinal pitching.)

To me, the stats say their offense isn't clicking consistently with the hype.

I wish I could say I wanted to spend the time compiling stats on Molina grounding into double plays, LOB games, 2 out singles with no one on, Albert reaching the plate with 2 outs and no one on and number of times Holiday has provided runs after a Pujols walk.

What do you think?

Almost all stats came from http://www.baseball-reference.com

Well, I almost broke my TV tonight. 10 hits, 2 runs vs 5 hits 3 runs.

I want to take a bat to their heads to show them how to swing the damn thing.

GAH!

Heh. I think they got hot at the wrong time.

The slide's been going on for about 3 weeks now.

I'm not optimistic now, and I wasn't going into the playoffs either.

The Rockies seem to be the hottest team going into the playoffs this year (like they were a couple years ago and went to the World Series after having to play an extra game just to get into the playoffs). So far they split two games on the road against last year's champs Philly and now head home for two in a best of five series. They were some ten games behind the Dodgers and came within a game or two of winning the division. They have a pretty solid bunch of pitchers which is very important in post-season play.

twins were just as hot in overtaking the tigers. let's see if they can do what the rox did to the phillies tonight against the yanks.

Apparently a fat chance. I was rooting for them too. not the australian rooting, but I wish it was.

Honestly, the slide's been going on since the ASG in my opinion. They seemed to be eeking by teams that had less than .500 record instead of destroying them. (And IMO with the lineup they have, they should have been demolishing teams and finishing at or above 100 wins.)

And whatever moron says that pitching trumps in the playoffs didn't just watch the leading 2 Cy Young candidates get zero run support in the playoffs. Pitching doesn't win games, folks, it saves them.

Guess you don't have to be scared anymore... It's unfortunate that the best team in the NL is already out of the playoffs. I really don't want to see the Dodgers in the WS.

Yeah, I'm pretty disappointed. 3 games and how many runs? 4 or 5? That's simply pitaful.

IMO, the only team that has a shot is the phillies, and I don't want to see them either.

This is my biggest fault with Tony LaRussa:

"I don't like the stigma of our club getting swept," manager Tony La Russa said. "We're a better club than that, and the series was more competitive than that. But that's what it is. But today wasn't a real good competition."

Tony, you lost 10 of the last 11 games. When are you going to stop riding the same sick horse? Your lineup did not work!

Ah....

good luck with the yankees. You're both going to need it. (esp given the umps seem to favor them.)
