most new "scary movies" are just startling, NOT scary. To be honest, i've never seen a truely scary movie, they always stretch the truth so much that its not believable. Now suspense movies really get me going.

There are only three movies which I consider to be truly scary. They are (drumroll please)
1. Night of the Living Dead (Original B/W version) 2. Pet Semetary 3. Pet Semetary II Now the last two are probably limited to me, but for whatever reason I have never been able to sit through either one. I have to turn them both off because I couldnt handle it. Other than those, I have never seen a horror movie that actually bothered me, and I have seen a lot of horror movies. If anyone has any horror suggestions toss them up. |

Most horror movies today seem to just be hack and slash. "ah! he jumped! he's got a knife!" that's not scary, really. gore never frightened me so much. made me feel ill... maybe..
Freddy, as silly as it may seem now, was a scary summonabitch. All burnt and pizza-face lookin nasty. Monsters and supernatural are what make a horror movie truly frightening, methinks. You know what scared me? Jurassic Park. The sound certainly helped.. it was loud as hell. But the thought of that actually happening and placing myself in the situation was a good scare. Pet Cemetary - good call. Definitely a scary flick. Her sister (was it Zelda or something weird like that?) still gives me the heebie-jeebies. The first part of the mini-series "It" was also scary. That clown was pure evil.

I guess I might be a bit skewed in my view as I saw Exorcist when I was 6 and it didnt bother me. The other supposedly scary movies such as the Nightmare line up, Friday the 13th, Halloween, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, etc. was that they were almost too gory to be real. To this day movies along those lines still make me laugh, with both their absurdity and creative ways of death.
A lot of the classic horror movies did more with sounds and camera angles to make the movies scary than anything else. They used to play on the fears of the public (Jaws is a good example. Its actually only rated PG but to this day some people havent gone swimming since. plus it is responsible for the wholesale blitzkrieg on all shark species) Other movies such as Piranaha (and Black Piranaha), Alligator, HSSSSSSS, and similar science based horror movies use the fact that eveyone believes in the hidden power of the government, military, and scientist. I think there is a definite difference between the shock of seeing a flayed and skinned person, which may cause the faint of heart to look away and actually being scared of the movie. Any other thoughts? |
