National Anthem and how its sung before sports events....
I never watch the actual "sports event"...Super bowl, World Series...blah blah blah...I'd rather be hog tied to a clothes rack in Filenes or Macys
....What I do almost never miss though, is when the National Anthem is being sung before it all begins...or halftime... For the super bowl as you all know, the Dixie Chicks had their spotlight...I didn't think they did too bad a job...however, I was wondering how many of you out there enjoy the updated new version the singers add to the song.......or would you prefer they just sing it the original way with no frills and thrills or high out of reach notes...Every singer seems to have their own version ... I'm just curious if anyone really ever listened to the Anthem being sung, or were too excited & busy popping their popcorn and getting their beers out.... http://www.superbowl.com/features/entertainment]AOL Sports - SuperBowl.com[/url]

National Anthem is not an easy song to sing. Can't count the number of times I've heard it "sung" poorly.
Mostly I prefer it the original way since the updated versions alot of the time aren't that good or add to the song. |

I prefer a normal style rather than a frilly version, though I thought the Dixie Chicks did a good job, as I have a thing with good a capella style singing...

I personally enjoy when an artist can add their own personal touch to the song. Having it the traditional way is great and all, but when an artist is asked to perform in the spotlight, it isn't for them to sing a song just like anyone else would -- traditional. If they are capable of performing such songs as the National Anthem, with their personal touch, AND make it sound good, by all means go for it! But if they aren't professional singers, then stick with the traditional.

I don't like when the originals get stepped on too much, but I really enjoyed the Chix's version. The harmony was flawless!

Anyone know where I can download the Dixie Chicks singing the national anthem? I missed it and would really like to check it out.

I like the original version, it rubs me the wrong way when it's sung in a manor that you cant understand the words of it. Have you ever dissected it and broke it down by verse and line to fully understand what the song entails?

As for the Dixie Chicks...them girls can sang! I don't really like country music, but I do like them (as well as shania and faith hill).
They did a great job on the national anthem. I think that its okay to add your own "flava" to the song as long as its well done.

Roseanne Arnold performed a flawless rendition of the National Anthem before. Search for it. But, the most famous version is very likely Whitney Houston's. Goose bumps if you ask me.

in my opinion, the national anthem is about honoring the country, not honoring a particular singer.
if you are going to sing it, i think you should sing the traditional national anthem. obviously, if you are a good vocalist, you should take advantage of your vocal talents, but don't try to see you much you can warble as you sing it. a.) it sounds like $h!^ in most cases and b.) it detracts from the anthem |

of course. but had the singer not been a celebrity to begin with, or rather, a singer, chances are they wouldn't be asked to display their talent. my dad sang the national anthem at two SF Giants baseball games. He's not a professional singer, and sang it the traditional way. thats cool and all.. but if you can sing it as Whitney Houston did during that one superbowl, then by all means, sing it! Quote:
if you're talking about the vibrato, some singers know how to use it, some don't. and yup, indeed some over-do it.. but if they sing it right, damn it could sound magnificent. |

Seriously, listen to Whitney Houston's rendition. It's definitely not the traditional anthem, but I'm sure that a majority of the people who were listening had never felt so patriotic and proud to hear it before. |
