Keanu working for free!

Did you guys see this article over at Killer Movies? http://www.killermovies.com/m/themat...cles/2726.html That is amazing. Keanu Reeves actually forfeited his pay on both of the new Matrix movies just to make sure they wouldn't be cancelled. Giving up 38 million bucks when you're the star is...amazing. I suppose he enjoys the work and publicity.

i would think he's getting a cut of the profits. but the article says he "signed away his cut of the money"

obviously, it's good for his career to be in the movies, but he must be getting something financial out of it

I don't understand why he would do such a thing. Didn't he know it was a hit after it went on screen and before he signed on to do the sequels? Or was it because the death of Aliyah(sp?) that he think it was going to go under?

MSC, the reason he forfeited his cut was because there were pretty valid rumors circulating that the budget for the movie was too high and warner brothers was going to scrap the entire project. Tommy, Fury, I agree with you guys that he likes the stardom. I even said "I guess he likes the fam" or something like that in my original post...but I really think that his current contract involves $0...which is amazing. I have a lot more respect for him after this sacrifice, even if he will reap the benefits of stardom. I guess he just wants to make sure that he ends up making more movies as Neo than he did in Bill & Ted movies... That way he ends up with a better reputation after death...

well, even if it was going to be a hit, they would still have to pay him before it made any money. by forfieting his monetary compensation they saved almost 20 mil a flick. perhaps enough to put it under budget. movies are pretty hard work (IMO, not $20 mil a movie, but still hard work). i hope he gets compensated properly for how well they do in sales. it would suck to see that $19 mil go to the studios because of keanus sacrifice to make this thing work.

there are lots of ways to make money after it has been released. first there is percentage of ticket sales. merchandising and endorsements can also come from it. dvd and video sales will probably be huge on these if they are anywhere near decent movies. from what ive seen in a couple of movies, the star of a movie might only get less than 1 or 2 percent of merchandising if they got anything at all. if he got a bigger cut of that he could still make some mucho dinero.

To exemplify Tommy's point of post-production profits, do you know who the highest paid Star Wars character was? It wasn't Harrison Ford or Natali Portman...it was Sir Alec Guiness. When they asked him how much they would have to pay him to work on this small film, rather than asking for a monetary sum, he asked for a specific small percentage of the movie's over-all profits. Because the studio didn't foresee the movie making much money, they easily granted him his wish...and in the end he made more than any of the other actors (then again, he was the only established actor on the cast).

PS - IMO Keanu made a good choice for his career and repuation. Wyld Stallions Forever!

James Cameron forfeited his pay/percentage in Titanic to finish it. It did so well the studio gave him the estimated 50 million his original stake would have been worth.

Does Keeanu get a percentage?

I'm sure he still gets a % of the gate.

I also think he realizes that this is his legacy. These are the movies he will be remembered for 75 years from now. I think these flicks will cement that for him and he will do whatever it takes to make that happen.

For large scale production movies the headlining actors/actresses typically receive royalties depending on how well the movie does overall.

I have a very strong feeling that these movies are going to be very, very bad. When Neo started flying at the end of the first one, the only thing I was thinking was "Oh no, the sequal is going to suck."

The first one was good for it's ground-breaking creativity. The sequals will have none.

Of course, I'll probably go see them anyway. *Sigh* I hope I'm wrong.

Sequals never do anything creative. They just try to outdo the first. Its a sad rule of moviemaking. Its so common I swear they must teach it in film school. It works sometimes,(T2) usually it fails. (Speed2)

Do you really think that there are more good sequals than bad sequals?

Bad sequals to good movies
MIB 2
Tremors 2
Predator 2
Rush Hour 2
Final Destination 2
Beverly Hills Cop 2
Jurassic Park 2 (and 3)
Crocidile Dundee 2
Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey
Ace Vetura 2

Good sequals to good movies
Die Hard 2
Lethal Weapon 2 (downhill after that)

I'm not saying that I know it will suck. I'm saying I'm pretty sure it will suck. And if it doesn't suck, it very, very, very likely won't be as good as the first one.

What was wrong with Ace 2? I loved it. You know it is all about what the director and writers want to do with the movies. I think up until ROcky 5 the rocky series was pretty good, I like the LOTR, Star Wars, Most of the Star Treks... THe Next Generation and Deep Space Nine ruled. I think if you actually took the time to the research that you would find just as many good sequels as bad ones.
