why do they feel the need to keep making stupid ass comments RIGHT UP UNTIL the lyrics begin in a song?? are the first 20-30 seconds of music any less a part of that song? NO! it pisses me off, because i feel like it's disrespectful to the artist who wrote the song; granted, a lot of the commercialized music of today is garbage to begin with, but even still... if the artist intended those first 20-30 seconds to be meaningless, then they would have just begun the song with lyrics right off the bat.
sorry, just had to get this off my chest, because i'm noticing that djs nowadays seem to have every song they play memorized, so they know exactly how long they have to spew whatever nonsense they've got to say before the singing starts... it just annoys the hell out of me... ![]()

Especially since they arent DJs anymore because they play songs off a list in pre-determined rotation.

yeah. i hate those really obnoxious DJs. that's probably the main reason why i don't listen to the radio too often.

I don't know how many of you have traveled. cross crountry But if you have, you'll notice the Clearchannel influence. They own so many radio stations, that they all sound the same! If I listen to radio, it'll be news. Otherwise I'll listen to CDs.

i also agree with what canta and hoser said. commercial radio stations are the same everywhere, which is too bad.
thanks for the links, chosen. i've actually been listening more to KCRW here in los angeles. it's pretty much guaranteed that when i flip them on, i'm gonna hear something i've never heard before. some of it's good, some of it i don't like so much, but it's always refreshing. and during the middle of the day, they broadcast NPR/PRI, so i get news and other interesting programs that way too. oh, and if you go to the website i linked to, you can listen to them on streaming online radio too. they also recently ended their subscription drive, but being the po' student i am, i couldn't contribute any money. If you're really sick of the DJ's, then check out XM Radio or Sirius radio. I have XM, and on probably 90% of the music stations there's no DJ at all. And for some reason, I find the DJ's on XM much less annoying than ones on normal radio.

Took a quick look at www.xmradio.com and www.sirius.com, and didn't really see anything specifically geared to Chinese. Both have a "World" station, which probably has some of it, but it looks like those stations are a variety of world music.

actually, djs refer to the period between the beginning of the music and the start of the lyrics as the "ramp" to the song. some radio-play cds will actually come labeled with the length of the ramp so they know how long they can talk for.
it's considered something of a skill to be able to perfectly time out an introduction so it takes up the whole ramp but ends just before the lyrics start. not that it's not uber-annoying. but that's why i don't listen to the radio ![]() |

I only listen to the radio for current traffic reports - but now that I have a one-minute commute to work, I don't even need to bother with that anymore!
My taste in music is such that no radio stations interest me anyway, so CDs are a must! I don't think that even satellite radio would be able to cater to my needs. ![]()

Yeah, I definitely need to get an MP3 CD player. My girl doesn't like my "scary music". Although, I did convince her to go to a Type O Negative concert with me this coming weekend! ![]() |

I'm sure that's the case. But believe me, the "same sound" phenomenon was gearing up long before the ClearChannel station-grab reached its peak. The program directors and general manager of the stations for whom I once worked attended conferences yearly. These conferences were to gather and share ideas of "what worked." Read that as, "What boosted ratings." They would "borrow" sloagans, playlists, tactics, promotions... you name it. The last time a DJ actually made a music decision was a long, long time ago. Dave. |
