Article says Seau is of Samoan descent, not that it matters.

Well here's my take on this. Junior and LT are tight. They use to hang out every friday when Junior was a Charger and eat Friend Chicken and watermelon.... Why is the media all over it? Because they are aholes looking for a story.

LT said he doesn't care and is not offended, infact LT himself confirmed that they use to grub on Fried Chicken from Popeyes every friday during the season..... If LT is not hurt why should others... people need to look at the context of the statement....

I mean comone LT wore Juniors Jersey and Junior wore LT's jersey to practice... GOD DAMN MEDIA looking for a story. buttholers if you ask me

This is not a racial remark ala Rush Fat Man... this was a joke from one friend to another THAT's IT!

Even if he was white, the fact that he is tight with LT and DID have friend chcicken and watermelon with him on a weekly basis should overide that.

i don't think it was a racist comment.

but just as a matter of practicality, it's usually wise (as i'm sure junior--who has always been a class act--now realizes) to avoid references to certain ethnic food, particularly ones with negative connotations.

it would be the the opponent of a korean athlete saying, "yeah, just feed him some dog meat" or something.

like i said, i don't think it was a racist comment. but even if it's not, is it worth raising very ugly and hurtful stereotypes in the minds of many people who hear your comment just so you can make a "valid" statement?

i don't think junior meant anything hurtful by what he said. but for black people who have heard the comment, it's a reminder of all the racist jokes and comments that have circulated for decades about their eating habits.

Under these quidelines Shaq is out of line. I didn't care and thought it was funny, but I guess if he doesn't hang out with Yao Ming and talk in that subtitled dialog then he was being hurtful, under these guidelines.

Again it was just a joke between friends and a friendly ribbing that goes on in sports that the media is trying to make into the Second coming of Rush.

The difference was that Shaq's statement wasn't even funny. Shaq is a prime example of someone who think they are much funnier than they really are.

I am a huge(maybe even the hugest) fan of Junior Seau and I think pretty much what all you are saying. It was a joke between friends and not meant to be racist. Junior is actually from the same barrio(hood) that my Dad is from. In that area, Hispanics and African Americans live for the most part harmoniously. Most of the time racist statements are made by people who have never met or know nothing about the culture. This is not the case with Junior. It was a joke.

I thought it was funny that Ladanian said that Junior likes watermelon and chicken more than any Black guy does

I hope that was your attempt at sarcasm, Raimin. Shaq's ignorant comment directed toward Yao Ming was just straight racist. The only reason the media played it down was because Shaq is one of the NBA's biggest stars. The media has its collective head so far up the NBA's collective butthole that it's getting friendly with the intestines. If, for example, Yao had made a racist comment against African-Americans toward Shaq, the media would have his head. Racism against Asians or Asian-Americans is downplayed much more than racism against other minority groups. Case in point: the Jan Stephenson comment about how Asians are ruining the LPGA, and how there should be a limit to the number of foreign players on the tour, including a limit to the number of Asian players on the tour. And yet, when surveyed, over half the ignorant/intolerant people who voted agreed with Stephenson's remark. Shaq's comment was racist, and Stephenson's comment was racist. Period. I don't know about Seau's comment about LT, but from what I hear it sounds like it was in good fun and that LT didn't take offense.

Part of the reason for this is Asians are no longer a minority group. Asians make up just over 4% of the population of America (roughly 4.3%), yet make up well over 8% of the doctors. Asians also hold WAY more executive & management type positions than others with respect to population. Asians numbers are disproportionately greater in institutions of higher learning than others... WITHOUT the assistance of affirmative action. Stanford: 24%. Harvard: 18%. Cornell: 17%. Princeton: 12%. In fact, when affirmative action was defeated in 1996, there was a huge rise in Asians in the top UC campuses. UC Berkeley: Well over 45%. UCLA: over 45%. UC Irvine: Haha, don't even want to know.

I know more Asian families than I can count that have, in 1 generation, gone from penniless, unable to speak English, and fresh off the boat to upper middle class, even in the face of discrimination & racism.

OF COURSE racism against Asians is going to be downplayed; this is what happens when you've graduated from minority status. You can also crack jokes about white folk, and have it laughed off. Sad as it is, it's currently, just a fact of life.

Do you know what minority means? Minority doesn't mean underrepresented, it means minority. 4% is still a minority. Sure Asians aren't underrepresented in the fields mentioned, but that doesn't make the group any less of a target of racism. If anything, the model-minority idea (the idea of a group working hard and rising up from next-to-nothing to high social standing) has caused increased racism toward Asians. That's the exact reason Jan Stephenson can get away with her racist remark that Asians are overrepresented in the LPGA. Your comment about Asian families that "made it" is another example of the model minority stereotype. People rising above hindrances in society doesn't nullify the obstacles they face.

Of course, I definitely agree. I was merely explaining the reason why so much of the racism directed at Asians is ignored and or downplayed.
