Controversial Documentary tonight on HBO

Tonight HBO is going to debut the documentary called Shelter Dogs, which talks about the life of one lady who runs a dog shelter in upstate New York. The film is controversial because the shelter does euthanasia, which many animal advocates don't believe in. They show it too which is really sad.

However, I had the pleasure of watching a screening of it a few months ago and let me tell you, it is powerful. The stories are tough but definitely an eye opener. If you have some time and some HBO, you might want to check it out.

Maybe I'm missing something, but what is controversial about euthanising dogs?

They're unwanted and non-human.

Well, for one thing a lot of people don't believe that the euthanizing of animals is regulated very well. A lot of time it is left up to a "judgement call" of the shelter employees. If a shelter gets money based on the amount of dogs they get per year, there is a conflict of interest to keeping the dogs alive. Many shelters will put a dog to sleep immediately if they think that the dog doesn't have a chance to get adopted. Which can be a shame, because it is difficult to find a dog as happy as one who just got "sprung" from a shelter. Many believe shelter dogs are the best dogs available.

Also nija a lot of areas are considered "no kill" areas where they will not put a dog to sleep ever unless it is ill. People on the other side of the coin believe this is more inhumane than putting a dog to sleep, because the dogs go crazy when they have to live in cages their whole lives.

At any rate check it out. It'll defintely get you thinking about it.

This is why Mrs. Kevster and I went to a no-kill shelter that rescues dogs from other area shelter to be adopted. www.beaglesandbuddies.com is a great place to find a good dog - they will get the dog healthy and treat them for any problems they have no matter what the cost. They think that there is a family out there for every dog - we got Lucy the wienerdog there.

I don't buy pets unless I'm sure I can flush it down the toilet without too much trouble.

I watched the documentary reluctantly. I love animals. I espceally love dogs since having the greatest pup alive Poom-Poom. It broke my heart watching them put down 2 dogs in the documentary. The film doesnt lay out any plans for solving the question and leaves it for you to decide whether to agree or disagree. Personally, I'm glad these shelters exsist, and moreover that the people who are featured in these shelters exsist. I'm not for putting animals to sleep because nobody wants them, but at the same time, I'm not for locking up an animal for the rest of his life. It's hard, not easy, and I'm biased. Good documentary
