NBA Portland-Atlanta Trade

They finally got rid of Wallace and are getting a consistant scorer in Abdur-Rahim.

Quote:
ESPN.com news services
The Portland Trail Blazers traded volatile forward Rasheed Wallace and reserve Wesley Person to the Atlanta Hawks late Monday night for Shareef Abdur-Rahim and two other players.

"Since [general manager] John Nash and I came here last summer, we pursued a plan that would take character into account with talent, create cap flexibility while continuing to put a competitive team on the court," Portland president Steve Patterson said.

"The community has been very clear in their message and we are listening. As we pledged to our fans and customers back in August, we want to build a competitive team on the court and one in which the fans can also be proud of off the court. Today's trade is a reflection of that commitment."

In Wallace, Atlanta gets an often-troubled player who's averaging 17 points a game. He drew the ire of NBA commissioner David Stern earlier this season when he told The Oregonian newspaper that the league's white establishment is exploiting young black athletes to enrich itself.

Wallace later issued an apology.

Last season, he was suspended by the league for seven games for threatening an official on the loading dock at the Rose Garden Arena after a game. It was the longest suspension ever handed down that did not involve physical contact or substance abuse.

In the 2000-01 season, he set the NBA record with 41 technical fouls.

The announcement of the trade came about 90 minutes after the Hawks beat the Dallas Mavericks 102-96. Abdur-Rahim had 27 points and 10 rebounds in the victory, and is averaging about 20 points this season.

He goes to the Trail Blazers with center Theo Ratliff and little-used point guard Dan Dickau, a first-round pick of the Sacramento Kings in 2002, who was traded to the Hawks on draft day.

The contracts for Wallace and Person end after this season, clearing up salary cap room for the Hawks. They are right at the luxury tax threshold.

Person, a guard, averages about six points a game.

big time trade. portland got a lot for him in shareef. he's gonna have a tough time in the west - with a lankier frame than rasheed, but still. he's good.

great move by portland. they secure a huge amount of talent and get rid of wallace, who was going to be a free agent after the season. basically, they are so far over the cap right now that if they couldn't reach a sign and trade agreement with him after the season, he probably would have left (since they didn't want him back), they would have gotten nothing, and they still would have been over the cap, so they couldn't have signed anyone good to replace him.

as for the hawks, they have taken $20mil off their cap for next year, but it'll be interested to see if they're getting into rebuilding mode or if the new ownership is just pulling a donald sterling.

Theo Ratliff is going to be abused by bigger centers out West but it's still a pretty good deal for Portland.

atlanta making a run at Kobe....

if they can somehow keep rasheed and sign kobe at the same time... that could be a very good team in the east.

Why in the world would Kobe want to go to Atlanta? There's nothing there. There's a midget sized 2 guard named Terry, no center, PF with a bad attitude and not much else. I guess the new owners are just trying to see how crappy the Hawks can get.

Could be worse. Being on a team with four future hall of famers and only one plays at a time

yeah, that's what i'm thinking too.

gigger, have you seen anything that indicates that atlanta is saying they want to make a run for kobe this summer, or are you just guessing?

There will only be a few teams that could afford him. After the trade, now you've got a few contenders:

Orlando (if T-Mac doesn't get a new contract)
Clippers
Atlanta
Memphis

Slaus...any others you can think of. You probably know better.

Give up some $$$ and sign with San Antonio. The Spurs still have some cap left.

they want to clear caproom because why?

kobe is the crown jewel of this offseason (provided he's not in jail)

the teams:
Orlando (if T-Mac doesn't get a new contract)
Clippers
Atlanta
Memphis
add the suns to that list (trade of stephon/penny).

from that list....Atlanta isn't a bad option considering rasheed can dominate the east, a backcourt of Terry/kobe is pretty darn good.

I don't see orlando giving up on TMac (his contract's expiring already?!?!)
Clippers is a wild card - it's LA....but that organization still has problems up top.
Memphis has a plethora of 2 guards, and it would be hard for him to really keep that superstar status in the middle of nowhere.

Yeah I think the likelyhood of Kobe leaving so cal for the hawks is real slim. And the only way he'd consider leaving would probably be if he played for West. But Memphis has enough 2s and 3s in their rotation i think. Maybe they'll have to ship one out?

I think the money will take Kobe anywhere.

He'll go anywhere where he can prove that he can win a championship without a dominating bigman (read: he's not going to san antonio).

He wants to be like Mike. He wants that greatness - the media saying that he can truly carry a team to a championship no matter who's around him.

and Jerry West is in Memphis, not atlanta.

He can't be like Mike that's the problem.

1. He could go to a team without a dominating big man. He could get bunches of scoring titles like Mike but he won't win as many championships though.

2. He could go to a team with a dominating big man. He wins more championships but won't win that many scoring titles.

I don't know if that's a fair assestment because he hasn't been able to prove himself just yet. I don't think there will be another mike, but i wouldn't write Kobe off just yet. We'll see. I don't think his concern right now is winning championships or scoring titles.

Nope. It's all about cheating on his wife and avoiding jail.
