my friend (who is a UVa alum and thus a huge duke hater) was over at my place last night and we were watching the games. I also detest duke with every bone in my body, not to mention that i have UConn picked to win it all. so when they pulled off the upset, we were SO pumped.

it just does me heart good to watch duke lose.

i don't understand why everyone hates Duke. They have an awesome, intelligent, and HONEST coach. They students grduate and are usually good people. They don't have the bad rep of Miami (NFL Jr.) and they're likeable people. Would you boo Coach K when he gets into the hall of Fame?

I guess it's a Yankee complex, except Duke doesn't buy their players like some schools do.

I think its more to do with the fact that every person I ever met who went to Duke ended up being a smug, arrogant, egotistical bastard.

oh ok...that explains it

but since I haven't met any dukies, i like Duke because they have the cleanest program in the US. Every single program should try to emulate Duke...except for the smugness part.

as zen pointed out, a MAJOR part of it is that dukies are some of the most arrogant, spoiled, whiny fans in the world. they think they are entitled to win, and constantly complain even when they do win (even though duke practically always gets the benefit of the doubt from the zebras, duke fans constantly think the officiating is biased against them).

here's a great example: Yahoo Sports columnist Dan Wetzel writes a column called "Credit Duke". it was largely complimentary of the Blue Devils, although some of the compliments were somewhat backhanded. here was one of the responses he received:
Quote:
Your jealousy of Duke's success is typical of the hate mongering going on these days. You certainly aren't rational in your commentary. That much is fact. Hey, Danny Boy, get used to the Devils' success, because it isn't going to end for long, long time. Bet on it. (link)

secondly, there is the media obsession with duke, led by dick vitale, otherwise known as Dookie V. Duke is constantly on national tv, even when they are having somewhat of a down year. commentators are constantly hyping them. people get tired of having the same team shoved down their throat (such as Dookie V's ability to be broadcasting a game that does not involve duke and is in no way related to duke yet find a way to bring up how wonderful duke is)

Coach K is a good guy, but at the same time i think we all know that a lot of that is a public face he puts on for the media. apparently in practice he drops the f-bomb like it's going out of style, and he's constantly working the refs to get favorable treatment. (there's also the arrogance issue -- what other coach sends an assistant to talk to the sideline reporters at halftime?) in the world of college coaches, i think Coach K is a class act, but he's certainly not a saint. but the the media tends to treat him as such, which makes a lot of people hate him even though he's a decent guy.

i agree that the Duke program is pretty clean. i have to respect that about them. they do bring in good kids, and those kids do graduate and seem to stay out of trouble. at the same time, i am sure that there is plenty of stuff that goes on that we never see. i think improper benefits to players, low-level crime by players, etc goes on at every major NCAA athletic program. some schools are just better at keeping it under wraps. the fact that the NCAA treats Duke with extreme deference and avoids investigating them or getting them in trouble (see the Corey Maggette/Myron Piggie situation) only adds to this suspicion.

and of course, the hatred of duke is similar to the hatred of the yankees. guess what? i hate the yankees, and i hate the lakers too, just for good measure (don't kill me jel ). while i may respect great teams that have sustained success over a period of time, i am not going to root for them and i'm going to be happy when they lose. i like to see the favorite loose and the underdog win. that's just how i feel about sports.

i view the blue devils in the same way. i have incredible respect for their program, and what they've accomplished. coach K has clearly made a place for himself in college basketball history with names like wooden, knight, rupp, allen, and dean smith. but at the same time, in the great words of zenbooty, "everyday is a good day for duke to lose"

Don't sell me short. I was saying that Dukies are some of the most arrogant, spoiled, whiny PEOPLE in the world. The sports part really had little to do with my feelings.

excellent point. i didn't mean to limit your statement so much. but since i wasn't trying to break down the general reasons why people from duke are so f-ing obnoxious, i was trying to keep it specific to the duke basketball fans

btw, i'm NOT a duke fan. just thought this article was apropos

Don't confuse hatred with jealousy when rooting against Duke

Duke center Shelden Williams never realized just how much animosity there was toward his team until one of his cousins made the mistake of walking through a mall wearing a Duke T-shirt one day last year. Total strangers yelled at her, screaming out how much they hated the Blue Devils. She couldn't have attracted more venom if she had clubbed baby seals in the middle of the food court.

It happened in Augusta, Ga., but it could have been in Anytown, USA, because Duke hatred is that widespread. Steadily and inevitably, in much the same way that the Blue Devils have been amassing trips to the Sweet 16 and Final Four, ill will toward Duke has grown over the past decade or so to the point where Coach Mike Krzyzewski's program is the most disliked team in college basketball. Stick them in pinstripes and the Dookies could pass for the Yankees.

How does the public hate the Blue Devils? Let us count the ways. MSNBC conducted an unscientific survey in which it asked people to choose the most hated team in the sport, and Duke was the runaway winner (loser?) with 53 percent of the more than 20,000 votes cast. North Carolina was next with 18 percent and no other school drew more than 11 percent of the vote. There is a hateduke.com Web site, which we're guessing isn't much different from the Duke-Sucks.com site. A Google search for the term "hate Duke" turned up 1,980 results. Folks just can't stand the Blue Devils.

More accurately, much of the public can't stand Duke's success, which continued on Sunday when the Blue Devils, who have missed the Sweet 16 three times in the past 18 seasons, earned their 10th trip to the Final Four in 24 years under Krzyzewski with a regional final win over Xavier. If it beats UConn on Saturday and either Georgia Tech or Oklahoma State on Monday night, Duke will have its fourth national championship and second in the past four years.

In other words, the only thing Duke has done to deserve such enmity is win, a fact that says far more about the haters than the hated. People may think they hate Duke, but they don't. They are jealous of Duke, they are bored by Duke, they are intimidated by Duke, or maybe they just were rejected by Duke, but they don't hate Duke.

What is there to hate? Duke is everything we're supposed to want in a college program. Duke players go to class, stay out of trouble and most of them graduate -- they have a 92 percent graduation rate during Krzyzewski's tenure. They win without cheating; can you remember a major recruiting scandal -- or even a minor one -- at Duke? Didn't think so. Their coach has been loyal to the school, resisting offers to go to the NBA and triple his salary.

The Blue Devils win the right way, so where is the animosity coming from? From the way that many of us react to success that we're not a part of -- with disdain. We find sustained excellence to be tedious, so much so that we start rooting for Anybody-But-Duke U.

We're so tired of seeing the Blue Devils at the top of the polls or in the Final Four almost every year that we start attributing negative qualities to them that aren't even there. Duke is supposed to be cold and corporate, the Microsoft of college hoops. Well, OK, except that its home gym, Cameron Indoor Stadium, is one of the coziest, most old-fashioned facilities in major college sports. It's supposed to be arrogant and smug. How is it then that the Blue Devils continue to produce some of the classiest individuals in the sport, such as NBA players Grant Hill and Elton Brand, or one of their current stars, freshman Luol Deng, who is so polite to his elders that at first you think he's putting you on?

If we hate Duke, what emotion do we have left for the schools at which boosters pay the players under the table, or where the "student-athletes" are given sham tests in bogus classes, or where the admissions department forgets about its academic standards when the applicant is 7-feet tall? How about academic-fraud-sucks.com, or hatecheating.com? If you want something to hate in college athletics, we can give you a wide selection of choices. As for Duke, you don't have to root for the Blue Devils to win another title, but it wouldn't hurt to show them a little love.

Hey! Don't drag my Hurricanes into this! Just because we recruit people with 9 criminal convictions to play linebacker, and Uncle Luke used to (heh heh...used to) shower their players with fancy gifts...

Anyway, I've got nothing against Duke. I would've gone there, if the school wasn't in such an utterly boring area. And Coach K is a decent guy. I always hated Laettner, though.

Was anyone else shocked to see Okafor on the pine for so long? I understand that Calhoun has a policy of benching guys with two fouls, but it just seemed like he was out for a LONG time.

i wasn't really surprised. i figured that as long as uconn could keep the deficit under double digits, they would let okafor sit, figuring that it was better to keep it reasonably close and make sure he didn't pick up a 3rd foul.
