Woo! Metroid: the movie

John Woo Bringing Metroid to the Big Screen
Source: The Hollywood Reporter Wednesday, April 7, 2004

John Woo has optioned Nintendo's best-selling video game franchise Metroid for the big screen, says The Hollywood Reporter. Woo will produce the sci-fi movie and has the option to direct. Terence Chang and Brad Foxhoven will share production responsibilities. Lion Rock Productions' Suzanne Zizzi also is attached to the project.

The plan is to release the first film before 2006. The movie will center on the origins of the game's female protagonist, sexy bounty hunter Samus Aran, and relate her adventures battling the insidious life-sucking Metroids and their controlling force, Mother Brain.

"We have to assume the mainstream audience is unfamiliar with the property," Foxhoven said. "As for the rest of the film, we will stay true to the game and have Samus battling the Metroids and Mother Brain in a fight for control of the galaxy."

Nintendo will unveil its eighth "Metroid" game, "Metroid Prime 2," at its E3 press conference May 11.

I'm so with stupid. This could suck big time but it could be bad ass. Anyone for a screw attack? And I can't wait for Metriod prime 2. A bit of an oxymoron though.

I with both stupids! They'll call it Metroid Prime' (Metroid Prime prime) But if they pick the right actress, and don't F*ck up the special effects, this could be really, really, cool. All we'd need then is a Zelda movie. Woo should be up to the task, I really hope it comes out well.

I don't remember Samus being very sexy. At least not the 16 bit version.

She takes off more clothes the faster you beat the game.

being that it's a sci-fi film, unless they get a big enuff budget, i'm thinking it's going to be pretty disappointing. if they're gonna try to make it faithful to the game, in terms of samus's moves and whatnot, they better have the means to make it look good, or it's gonna be super cheesy, especially since it is a sci-fi setting.

also, the story of metroid itself isn't very complicated, so i'm sure we can expect a lot of new things in the script. it also sounds like they're planning on doing more than one movie, making this a franchise. if that's the case, i definitely think their best bet is to keep the movie line separate from the game line, in terms of story and whatnot.

bottom line, i'm also not a big fan of what john woo has done in the US, so i'm keeping my expectations low for this one.

Only if you take "prime" as being first. If you take it as being a prime number, 2 qualifies (shutting up now)

Low expectations here. Not just because video games don't always translate well to the big screen... (Mario Mario and Luigi Mario in Super Mario Bros...). It just seems to me that the premise of shooting up alien crap usually works better for video games than for movies. While I'll admit that this has huge upside (potential), I think it'll flop.

Yeah, but if the movie is under two hours long, we get to see her in a bikini!

I don't get it. What's the movie length have to do with that?

If you beat any of the games faster than normal, or with all the collectable items in tow, then you get to see Samus in less clothing. That's what the screenshot above is.

Hence, it'll be cool with sexuality and all of John Woo-ness, ,
