NBA Rookie of the Year

Who is going to win NBA Rookie of the Year title?
LeBron James
Carmelo Anthony
Dwyane Wade

My vote goes to LeBron even though his team didn't make the playoffs. His overall number is better than Carmelo Anthony.

I can respect your opinion (because Lebron did put up stronger numbers), but Carmelo plays in the stronger conference and led his team into the playoffs. Did you see the most recent Nuggets games? Bro was clutch, knocking down shots exactly when his team needed them. Syracuse last year was no fluke. Carmelo can ball. His team was even more improved than the Cavs, and he's my vote for Rookie of the Year.

That's true but he has more support in Denver than LeBron has in Cleveland.

Think so? Both teams were dismal last year. I haven't really been keeping score, but Cleveland has Ilgauskas (sp?) and Boozer, while Denver has Andre Miller and uh... Nene? Guys like Jon Barry (Den), Earl Boykins (Den), Jeff McInnis (Cle), and the like are decent players, but I think the supporting casts are pretty even.

Marcus Camby played pretty good for Denver this year. His game against the Kings today was awesome.

cavs already had ilgauskas and boozer. nugs got andre miller and camby back from IL over the offseason. my vote goes to lebron: more assists, more steals, more blocks...led for points most of the season. and my main reason - he shut all his critics up, right from the very first regular season games

If for no other reason, Carmelo should win it because he's a much better role model for the nation's youth. He went to college (even if it was only for a year), he won an NCAA championship with Cuse, he DIDN'T get caught up in jersey controversies and what-not, he DIDN'T get $100,000,000 of endorsement contracts, and yet he's putting up a great season. In a week, he'll still be putting up a great season. Lebron won't. Not much else to it. If I had a kid, I'd much rather have him look up to Melo than Lebron. And you're lying to yourself if you think kids out there don't idolize Lebron James and his $100million. Even better, even more wholesome story would be if Carmelo played college ball for 4 years, but I still think it speaks volumes that he played 1. I wouldn't have a problem with Lebron James if he invested a year (or preferably more) in college ball.

My vote would go to Bron. He's definitely lived up to the tremendous hype this year. It's hard to believe that this kid was playing high school ball last year! Has anyone ever come into the pros at 18 yrs old and played at such a high level? It'll be fun watching him and Melo going head to head for the years to come.

Bron or Melo...pretty hard to choose. My hat goes off to either one of them. If Melo gets it thats great. If Bron gets it thats great. Because I think they both deserve it. Bron has lived through the hype of this season and Melo and brought his team where people havn't seen in a long time.

Both of them gets my vote. I think I can say safely the world of basketball for the years to come will be great.

co-ROY

but I personally like Melo over bron.

yes, the Cavs stayed virtually the same around him (except McInnis, who ended up getting hurt when they needed him most), while the Nuggets got new people to fill in the wholes to create a virtually new team.
However:
1) the west is way more difficult to make the playoffs than the east (you didn't even need a .500 record in the east to make it).
2) they had tiebreakers over portland and utah. and they're record against the other playoff teams isn't horrible (they weren't swept in any of the series and they went .500 against 4 of the other playoff teams).
3) he's from baltimore :-)

i think either of them can make a strong case for it, and it's possible that we'll get co-ROY honors (i believe that happened back when j.kidd and g.hill were rooks.)

areas where they are equal:
1.) both came into teams with a culture of losing and turned it around
2.) both had a couple solid players around them and a lot of pretty mediocre players
3.) statistically, i think they are pretty similar. melo shoots slightly better in all categories (FG, 3PT, FT). scoring is almost dead-even. james is slightly more turn-over prone, while melo is slightly more foul-prone. james averages more assists, while melo averages more rebounds (which is natural for the positions that they play).

areas where melo has the advantage:
1.) he has led his team to more success. both teams won 17 games last year. this year, cleveland has won 34 (so far). denver has won 43, playing in the much tougher western conference.
2.) he has led his team to the playoffs. and when the pressure was greatest (trying to fend off utah and portland for the last spot) he has stepped up big-time

areas where james has the advantage
1.) he has less experience yet has arguably performed just as well as james
2.) he has been under incredible pressure yet has flourished under it.
3.) he has come up big in high-pressure games (such as playing in MSG in a nationally-televised game against the knicks).

on balance, i think the slight edge in accomplishments goes to melo, but i think the hype surrounding james will get him the award. and like i said, it's a close call. i wouldn't cry foul if either of them won it.

there is a reason why lebron got all those endorsements: companies predicted him to be great...they were right. wouldnt you sign a contract for $100 mil if nike offered it to you?

sure, hes made some mistakes, like the jersey incident, but who hasnt made mistakes. ppl who see him as an investment rather than a human being are part to blame to. shoot, id take a jersey if a store gave it to me too.

winning an ncaa championship makes him a role model? no, supporting ur community, spending time with players from ur past school, training them to be better, makes you a role model.

disclaimer: i dont idolize any bball player in the league right now.

Let us not forget Brand and Francis
Now I vote for Melo because I think his impact was greater. His competition was fiercer out in the west as well. We all talk about how Bron met his expectations, but what about Melo? I personally think he exceeded some people's expectations as well.
I have a feeling that the league will be awarding a Co-ROY because this will avoid a lot of controversy.

I voted Dwayne Wade, just because I'm a Heat fan. He's too frail, though.

Seriously, my vote would go to Melo. When the Heat were headed for the lottery last year, I actually watched the announcement of draft slots just to find out if the Heat could get #3. I didn't want James, and I sure as hell didn't want Darko. I wanted Carmelo, and he's done nothing since then to make me think I wanted the wrong guy. I'm a big fan.

the most recent poll on NBA.com shows Melo is leading the fans' votes with a 62% to 30% advantage over LeBron... that's pretty damn significant...

Too bad the Pistons didn't have your foresight. Someday Darko might be good, but Melo and Lebron are already great. Sorry, but Tayshaun Prince is no Carmelo Anthony, and already having Prince is no reason not to draft Melo.

eh, the pistons are doing ok without melo. remember, if he were playing on that team he would not be averaging anywhere close to the numbers he is averaging on a generally crappy denver team and might not even be starting.

if in 3 or 4 years darko is a bust, then i'll change my tune, but for now the pistons are fine with the position they're in.

Yeah the Pistons are fine right now. They'd be better than fine with Carmelo though. Piston fans should hope the rest of their team (other than Darko) is still healthy by the time he starts to hit his stride though.

I'm actually a little surprised. I thought the playoffs would have clinched Melo at least co-ROY honors. Oh well. I guess money talks, and Lebron is the new face for the NBA's marketing. Kudos to Lebron, Carmelo, and Dwayne Wade for giving fans a great rookie year.
