Post Shrek 2 is the new top-grossing animated film

'Shrek 2' now top-grossing animated film
Film surpasses 'Finding Nemo' in less than a month

(Reuters) -- "Shrek 2," the movie about the big green ogre and his princess bride Fiona, topped last year's "Finding Nemo" to become the highest-grossing animated film of all time in the United States and Canada, DreamWorks said Monday.

Through Sunday, the computer-animated film had sold $354 million worth of tickets at U.S. and Canadian box offices, according to box office tracking service Exhibitor Relations Inc.

That beats "Nemo," last year's big hit from Pixar Animation Studios Inc. and the Walt Disney Co., which earned $339.8 million on a comparable basis as well as 1994's Disney hit "The Lion King," which for years reigned as the leading animated box office hit with $328.4 million.

"Shrek 2" is now No. 9 on the list of all-time box office hits in North America, ahead of No. 10 "The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers" ($340 million) and poised to overtake No. 8 "Jurassic Park" (356.7 million).

"Shrek 2" was produced and distributed by privately held DreamWorks SKG.

Damn that's impressive but does the calculation account for the ticket price differences?

of course not! that's the beauty of box-office "records". they never account for ticket inflation. which means that you can set new records practically every year, as long as you have decent movies to work with.

for instance, shrek 2 became the fastest movie to ever hit $350mil, taking just 26 days. it beat spider-man's record by 5 days. that's 20 percent faster, but spiderman was released 2 years ago. while i don't think ticket prices have inceased 20% in two years, i wouldn't be surprised if they've gone up 10%-15%. which means shrek did better, but not that much better.

It's also hilarious that domestic box office figures are reported in US Dollars when it includes Canadian box office figures in Canadian Dollars. For example:

$100M US Dollars at US Box Office
$50M Canadian Dollars at Canadian Box Office
equals
$150 Domestic Box Office. LOL

thats funny!
its kinda like mark mcguire breaking the long-standing home-run record in a single season, then bonds shatters that a couple of years later.

Didn't Jaws make like 250 million in like 1976? Would that be about 500 million plus today? I wish a movie would beat out Titanic.

you have GOT to be sh*tting me! that is hilarious!

maybe we should pay the movie execs in canadian dollars, since they seem to think they're equivalent to USD.

btw, thinking about it, using the box office figures is such a stupid way to calculate movie success. when you look at the billboard chart, is it measuring dollars sold? no, it's units. when you look at the NYT bestsellers list, is it total dollars sold? no, it's numbers of books. if we followed hollywood's logic, record companies would mark up hot releases by an extra $1 just to set a new "record".

of course, people will argue, "using dollar figures helps compare to a movie's production cost" guess what? books and music have production costs too, and those costs have skyrocketed over the years (although certainly not as much as the cost of movie production). yet we still seem perfectly comfortable using a units-sold measurement for all these other areas.

Shrek 2 was great. I really liked it. Entertaining and funny. Well worth the $9 I paid last night.

But then they might show that movie piracy has no effect whatsoever on movie attendance. Can't have any evidence to the contrary getting shown.
