Expansion Draft Protected/Unprotected List

So ESPN has this sportsnation poll where they let you pick your team from the unprotected list in the upcoming NBA draft. The full list is in ESPN Insider (bastards!)

Can someone find the full list and post it here? There's some interesting names on it, like Allan Houston, Stackhouse, Jalen Rose, and Antoine Walker.

D. Fisher might be selected per ESPN.

I would take none of those guys. The thing is, teams are going to have to give up something to Charlotte to get them to take one of those guys, since they are all salary cap nightmares. The Bobcats might take Jalen Rose, but I'm guessing they'd want Chandler or Curry too. And they might take Stackhouse, but they'd want....ummmm....hmmm...wow. Ok, yeah, they probably won't take Stackhouse under any circumstances.

No way. Then the Knicks would have a chance to escape the dungeon of the salary cap a year or two earlier. That would be terrible. Nobody wants to see something like that. Better to let them keep losing, so that Starbury gets pissed and tries to take over games himself, realizes he needs a legit big man, gets frustrated by all the losing, and demands another trade.

The Bobcats could try to go after Kobe given that he's not playing for the Colorado Jailers.

If Hill is protected, it's only because Orlando can't convince Charlotte to take him...which makes sense, since Orlando has nothing else to offer the Bobcats.

As for my potential Charlotte draft:
G: Chucky Atkins
Mo Peterson
Alvin Williams

F: Lorenzen Wright
Marcus Fizer
Jahidi White
Gerald Wallace

C: Scot Pollard
Michael Olowokandi

I justify grabbing Pollard because you can never have too many big, slow, untalented white guys at center. I don't think I'd be able to get Williams AND Peterson from Toronto, because I'm pretty sure you can't get more than one guy from the same team.

Of course, I'd like for the Bobcats to grab either Eddie Jones or Brian Grant. But that's just me being selfish.

Actually rumors last week said that 4-5 teams were interested in TRADING for Hill, so why leave him unprotected.

I think the idea was that he's in his last year of contract and he can be used to dump salary (i.e. trade high priced losers and let hill go at the end of the season).

Also, he's rehabbing decently well and you never know, he might spring a huge season and be healthy like Griffey is this year.

Grant Hill has ruined baskettball for me in the 4 years I've lived in a b-ball town. If only Orlando had gotten somebody healthy we could have been a perenial power. Damn you Grant Hill.

Well, Alou pisses on his own hands. That's punishment enough.
Prior just started playing a week ago.
Wood is still on the DL.

The only way a team would want Hill was for salary cap relief in that his contract has to run out soon. Anyone know how many years are left on his current deal?

you're right -- a team can only lose one player to the expansion draft.

just for reference (i can never keep all these rules straight):

http://www.nba.com/bobcats/news/draf...s_summary.html

SUMMARY OF EXPANSION DRAFT RULES

A. Player Selection

The Charlotte Bobcats Expansion Draft will take place on June 22 (if the NBA Finals extend to seven games, it will be June 23), prior to the 2004 NBA Draft on June 24.

The Bobcats will select a minimum of 14 players who are under contract or restricted free agents for the 2004-05 season.

The Bobcats may select no more than one player from each team.

The Bobcats can only select players that are left unprotected by an NBA team.

Each of the 29 NBA teams may protect a maximum of eight players on its roster who are under contract or are restricted free agents at the conclusion of the 2003-04 season.

Each of the 29 NBA teams will designate the players on its roster who are eligible for selection by the Bobcats.

Each of the 29 NBA teams must designate at least one player on its roster to be eligible for selection by the Bobcats, even if the team does not have eight players under contract or as restricted free agents for the 2004-05 season.

Any player under contract selected by the Bobcats will immediately be placed on the Bobcats roster.

Any eligible restricted free agent selected by the Bobcats shall immediately become an unrestricted free agent.

Unrestricted free agents are not eligible to be protected nor are they eligible to be selected by the Bobcats.

B. Pre-Expansion Draft Trades

Teams will be permitted to enter into pre-Expansion Draft trades in which Charlotte agrees to select or not select certain unprotected players.

C. Salary Cap

Charlotte will be permitted to select players in the Expansion Draft without regard to the Salary Cap.

Charlotte will have a Salary Cap in its first season equal to 66% of the Salary Cap applicable to the rest of the league and a Salary Cap in its second season equal to 75% of the Salary Cap applicable to the rest of the league.

Charlotte will be permitted to sign any restricted free agent it selects in the Expansion Draft using the same “Bird,” “Early Bird” or “Non-Bird” Exception that the player’s prior team would have had.

Compensation paid to a selected player under a contract protected for lack of skill will be excluded from Charlotte’s Team Salary if the player’s contract is terminated (via the waiver procedure) prior to the start of the 2004-05 season.

A team with a Team Salary above the Salary Cap will receive a Trade Exception to replace a player (other than a restricted free agent) selected from its unprotected list.

D. Post-Expansion Draft Transactions

A team will not be permitted to reacquire a player that it loses in the Expansion Draft prior to the expiration of one year from the date of the Expansion Draft, unless the player is waived and not claimed by any other team.

-----
for the record, i think charlotte's general strategy will be to a.) select underrated players (which is why i think chucky atkins is almost sure to get picked up) or b.) pick up decent, high-salary players with 2 years or less on their contracts

hmm....i didn't realize he had a bloated contract. i suppose i shouldn't be surprised -- has any GM ever not overpaid an oversized slow guy? (reference bryant "big country" reeves and christian lattner)

(by the way, i've been rooting for the pistons for so long that i remember when both of those losers were on our roster and i was hoping that detroit would be the place where they'd finally turn it on.)

Croshere got that ridiculous contract off of one year in which the Pacers made it to the final. Remember when everyone was comparing him to Larry Bird? I wish anytime theres a white guy who can play that they stop comparing him to Bird. It does the player a great disservice.

Since I am currently in Indianapolis... I find that comment quite funny.

The highest paid "bench warmer" in the league maybe?

I wish the NBA would quit giving ridiculous contracts to players who show just a hint of progress in a contract year. (Are you listening, Erick Dampier pursuers?)
