Thumbs up Detroit Pistons Win NBA Title!!

this is the official Pistons victory thread (unlike all the trash-talking threads going around).

complete domination in every game, except for 30 seconds and the OT in game 2. i never imagined that the pistons would so completely deconstruct the lakers and their game. there was NO QUESTION from this series about who the better team was.

and how many great stories can you fit on one team?
1.) Ben Wallace, unrecruited to play basketball out of high school, juco in Cleveland, tiny Virginia Union University, undrafted, cut by multiple teams, a stint in Europe, and getting shuffled from team to team, he finally finds a home in Detroit and becomes one NBA's best defensive behavior, the soul and the foundation of an NBA championship team, and even, at times, an offensive force.

2.) Larry Brown, the hall-of-fame coach, who had coached so many bad NBA teams into the playoffs, but had the rap that he couldn't lead a team to the championship. how about taking on a good pistons team lacking superstars, taking them to the Finals, and then completely outcoaching mr. playoffs himself, Phil Jackson.

3.) Chauncy Billups, the former #3 pick, playing on his sixth team, who had to sacrifice so much of his game to fit into Larry Brown's system and learn to "play the right way", then winning the Finals MVP.

4.) Rip Hamilton, from a poor town in Pennsylvania, gets dumped by MJ in washington in favor of Jerry Stackhouse. but he keeps working and starts to mature into a rising star.

i could keep going on.....but i won't. all i can say is DEEEEE-TROIT BASKETBALLLL!!!!!!!

from the Free Press, R-E-S-P-E-C-T!
from the Detroit News, PAYDAY!

oh yeah....i'm gonna be enjoying this for awhile.

Actually, they may as well just be called the "B Team", because there were so many A-list guys that said no. But I think the team we're sending will be awesome to watch. Odom, Lebron, AI, Wade, Starbury, Amare (I would've preferred Bibby, but....). And those are just the exciting guys. We've also got Timmy D and Williamson to do the dirty work.

having lived near philly since 97, ive admired how Larry Brown worked - how he can make a bad team really good. a lot of people here didnt like him leaving the sixers, but im glad he did. he's done the best he could out of a rag-tag team , but if there really isnt anymore material to work with, you can only go on for so long (doesnt help with A.I. falling back into his older ways, and not having any legitimate center). i for one am glad he got the NBA championship this year with the Pistons. all those wins and no trophy or ring to show for. about damn time!

and how aboot his wife, eh? she is one BEAUTIFUL WOMAN!

we all know what else Larry Brown got last night after they got home....

A bunch of my co-workers and I got together at a bar to cheer for the Pistons. Most of us were fans of other teams not in the finals most of us wanted to see L.A. go down in flames and boy did they ever! We had just one Lakers fan amongst us and she was not happy at all after the 1st half.

A great series by the Pistons - now I'll get to hear all the whining and moaning on the radio today. At least I'll see a lot less Laker flags now!

I'll wholeheartedly second that. They were the best Team by far.

Way to go, Pistons! This is a much better win only because the Lakers were so heavily favored, and they were schooled by the underdogs. Like everyone said, it's the team playing that beat them.... Shaq & Kobe are amazing players, but amazing players don't win games. Amazing teamwork does, however!

thanks. glad to hear that some of LB's philly fans are happy to hear about his title. i know some people there are still bitter....and i don't blame them. but i think it's a nice capstone on his career.

as for his wife....yeah. she's a catch. it cracked me up when they first showed her last night, and al michaels is like "there's shelly brown, larry brown's ............. wife" in that long, somewhat uncomfortable pause, i really thought doc rivers needed to add "larry brown's much young and MUCH more attractive wife."

Yeah, it's nice to see him finally get one. He's definitely earned it. BTW, Richard Hamilton is from the next town over .

I'm not a big sports fan at all, but being that they're the hometown team of course I'm thrilled that they took it. (Plus I drive by the Palace every day, so it's hard not to be involved with all of the festivities!)

However, I think EVERYONE was surprised by this, and that's what makes it so exciting. I know everyone around here was hoping that the Pistons would win, but I don't think too many people actually *expected* them to take it. Nothing like going in as the underdog & coming out on top!

Either it wasn't that funny, or no one got the joke. Read my post again, out loud. In front of coworkers for the best effect.

plus ben wallace and rip hamilton. too bad jermaine o'neal opted out. but he's been playing on a bad knee. you know what? i think it's a good thing. these guys might be hungrier than the "stars." lb did a great job getting detroit to play as a team. i'll be he can do the same with the olympic squad.

Stern and the NBA must hate it that a team (and not a collection of individual stars) won this year, but I think it's great. Great teamwork, great energy, and great defense... nobody deserved to win more than this Detroit Piston team. Might not be as marketable to today's youth, but they played hard and played well. My hat's off.
