"Delhomme gets $38M contract"

Hope he earns this money.

ESPN.com

The Carolina Panthers rewarded quarterback Jake Delhomme for his Super Bowl season Thursday by giving him a five-year, $38 million contract extension that included a $12 million signing bonus.

Delhomme was entering the final year of a two-year, $4 million contract. He was scheduled to make a base salary of $1.37 million. This deal will keep him in Carolina until 2009.

The 29-year-old Delhomme came to the Panthers with only two career starts, for the New Orleans Saints. Coach John Fox started the season with Rodney Peete but put Delhomme in and never looked back.

Delhomme completed 266 of 449 passes for 3,219 yards and 19 touchdowns.

Like a lot of former backups who came out of nowhere to get starting jobs, Delhomme used NFL Europe as a proving ground. He played for Amsterdam in 1998 and Frankfurt in 1999. His 67.3 completion percentage for Frankfurt in 1999 put him on the map as a potential quarterback of the future.

The thing is, NFL contracts are set up to have huge payments in the final years, when the player is likely to be cut. So that $38M figure is probably a huge exaggeration. Still, a $12 mil signing bonus for Delhomme is ridiculous. He's like Trent Dilfer, only cajun.

Yup. It's all about the signing bonus. I get tired of these huge $$$ contract #s being reported since the NFL lets you cut players.

Trent Dilfer can't throw if his life depends on it.

IMHO Delhomme is a better QB.

exactly....
for the teams, it's all about the backloaded contracts
for the players, it's all about the signing bonus.

12 mil isn't ridiculous anymore. a starting QB should be able to command that type of money.

It basically makes Delhomme uncutable for a few years because the signing bonus would get accelerated to the year he got cut depending on the timing. However, if Delhomme plays well they'll just keep giving him extensions which he can never obtain.

I think I remember this type of deal happening to Kurt Warner. (Though I attribute his success/failure to be attributed more to a change in management than a one season wonder.)

Tom Brady got a similar deal after Super Bowl XXXVI, and that seemed to work out ok. I think Delhomme should be a solid QB for years. As long as the Carolina D stays strong, they will be a perenial contender.

Tommy Maddox is still way underpaid for being a starting quarterback.
