What one album.....

would you have on a desert island, if you were stranded there for ten years?

Define album as: a single commercial studio release. No box sets, no live albums, no japanese import bootlegs, and let's also say no greatest hits collections. But an album spanning two discs (ie smashing pumpkins' melancholy and the infinite sadness) is allowed.

by the way, this island doesn't have computers, it doesn't have mp3s, it doesn't have ipods. you can't download songs from you cell phone. all you have is enough food and water to survive, a small CD player, and a tree that mysteriously produces fruit containing AA batteries.

i know. i don't know my answer yet. i'm still trying to figure it out.

good choice with back in black. it's one of those albums that you'd eventually tire of, but not get sick of it.

I was going to say the Forrest Gump soundtrack, but I guess that's out. Right now? That's a tough one. At the moment, I'd say, Steven Curtis Chapman's Speechless. That could change in a moment, so don't expect it to stay the same.

Yeah, it's a Christian CD, so sue me.

No live albums? Jerk! That makes the choice much tougher.

Ok, I'll go with Abba. Juuuust kidding. I'd take only one song- "Beautiful" by Mos Def, Talib Kweli, and Mary J. Blige. I dont' know if it was even released as a single, but I'd take it. It's got good memories attached to it, and that's all I need.

I would take Pink Floyd, Wish You Were Here. Although Dark Side would be a close second.

Good point. Listening to Pink Floyd would give me the will to kill myself to avoid living on a desert island.

Springsteen's Born to Run. Might only have 8 songs but still the best.

Too close to call, I tend to get tired of music pretty quickly. I don't think I could decide.

i know. but live albums make it too easy....they can end up being like greatest hits collections.

i'm still not sure what mine would be, but i think it's Sugar's Beaster album. it's just a six-song EP, but the emotional development in it is incredible. it's like being on a rollercoaster ride with a really good soundtrack.

of course, it's tough not to pick a pearl jam album (that's where live discs would be great. i'd do either chicago 7/15/95 or state college may 2003). if i had to pick one PJ album, i think it'd pick either no code or yield.

pink floyd's the wall disc 1, nine inch nail's pretty hate machine, and REM's monster get serious consideration as well.

I'd probably pick like Prince's Purple Rain or "Sign O' the Times" album...

Although lately, I've still been playin' the hell outta Outkast's Speakerboxxx/The Love Below....

No live albums rules out the Clash's "From Here to Eternity" and Bob Marley's "Babylon By Bus" so I would go with the Beatles "Abbey Road". "Dark Side of the Moon" would drive me crazy on repeated listenings. I could also vote for Bruce Springsteen's "The Wild, the Innocent, and the E-Street Shuffle"- some great stories on there.

too hard to choose...

but for the sake of choosing, i'll say either Elliott Smith's Either/Or, or Starflyer 59's The Fashion Focus.

Speakerboxxx isn't their best stuff. Aquemini was pretty good, ATLiens was one of the best albums of the 90s, and while I can't even remember the name of the "Bombs over Baghdad" album, that one was a gem too.
