RIAA is suing more people

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2004/06/23/riaa_sues_482/

Uh oh...there are some IPs from STL... I didn't do it.

Seriously, how do you sue "unnamed" defendants? I hope Charter doesn't release any of these IPs, if they're on Charter.

I hate the RIAA.

I wonder how many are going to be:
a) kids under the age of 13
b) grandmothers that own Apple computers
c) people who don't own computers

I have a question about this. I know a lot of people have roommates and use routers to share cable modem or dsl connections or whatever. It would appear that regardless who is doing the downloading, only the person whose name is on the bill is going to get in trouble. I also notice that a lot of people buy wireless routers and never bother to enable the security settings on them. If they only know the external IP, could you argue that somebody was using your network without your consent?

IANAL but, it would still be your fault. You pay for it, the theory goes, your responsible for it.

If I ever got sued by the RIAA I'd flee to Australia or Mexico. They can go climba tree.

So, I've been using SoulSeek for about six months now, and everything was going fine. I only shared my music library with people I DL'ed from. Today I go out to my mailbox and find an envelope with a distinct 'RIAA' letterhead on it. I opened it up to find a pretty harsh letter from the RIAA, basically telling me that they are going to sue me.

I called up my mom and my mom got scared- she said "you're moving in with your auntie and uncle in Bel-Air." I whistled for a cab and when it came near, the license plate said "fresh" and had dice in the mirror, if anything I could say that this cab was rare, but I thought nah, forget it, yo home to bel-air! I pulled up to a house about seven or eight, I yelled to the cabbie yo home, smell you later, looked at my kingdom I was finally there, to sit on my throne as the prince of Bel-Air.

In other news, Limewire has a proxy feature. I'll let them sue random offshore server farms.

It is more secure because in theory you only let in people you know. So it's like s 'trusted network'.

Well first you need to find people that actually trust you.

So I imagine it's rather limited unless one of your friends is like a super pirater or something.

Here's a great place to find free proxys:

Take advantage of incompetant network administration across the world. It's pretty spotty so it takes some time to find a good one.

There are places on the net that you can pay for anonymity.

Really I'm just a novice at this whole "don't get caught" privacy thing (evidenced by me posting at all).

They get new addresses all the time but the people who work on the blocklists update the blocklists all the time as well. Obviously no one's 100% safe if you're using any p2p software at all but I'll take my chances.

The way I look at it...there's anti-p2p and pro-p2p people out there. The pro-p2p people a) outnumber the anti ones, b) are smarter than the anti ones, and c) are more determined than the anti ones. (I know you think I'm probably blowing smoke up your arse but think about it.) The pro-p2p people are constantly trying to find ways to thwart the anti people from shutting things down, and they're succeeding. How many websites have been shut down vs how many are still open or open every day? Not only that...how many people have been sued vs never been caught.

Strength in numbers my friend.

I'm not trying to be blind to the fact but...I'm not worried.

Uh...erm...not sure.
From what I understand, they have IP logging software (or maybe it's just a DOS prompt running netstat) and they log and add any IPs that are questionable. They have blocklists for everything; not just anti p2p but also spyware, military, government, etc.

All I know is there's geeks out there who know more about this stuff than me and they're the ones who work on the software; I just use it (and sorta trust them with my proverbial butt).
