Cool so im gonna go see god in concert this saturday evening

Eric Clapton, that is.
at the wachovia center in philly.
http://www.eventinventory.com/graphi...4-1-2-main.gif

i have a chance to buy floor seats for considerably cheap price at my ticket broker. there is a pair of section 5 floor seats thats just $40 more than one floor seat which is in section 2 (section front and center compared to section 5 which is the middle floor section). im thinking it would be fun to have someone come with me, but this late i cant find anyone cool enough. actually i cant find anyone who would want to go with me, period. actually no one ive contacted has returned my call.
then again, i think im the only one among people here i know that actually is into eric clapton, not just a casual listener. or even realize the magnitude of this appearance by him - he never goes out on tours anymore, and this is RARE.

plus being one of my guitar idols, i HAVE to see him.

i was even thinking of giving away the ticket to anyone who would go with me, but im also thinking this is more of a personal thing for me, so i may go alone.

(plus the fact that the two systems that died i have to revive will need some spending on some new parts...oi! that will make my decision clear and quick)

clapton is god!!!!

i dunno - i shall see (and hear) saturday!
probably not - it would evoke too much memory of his son, i would think.
most likely majority of what he will play are songs from his current album that hes promoting, and maybe 1 or 2 classic tunes.
its a sin, but i havent heard his latest album at all. i should take a trip down the used CD store tomorrow on my day off...

I saw slowhand play in 2000. Man he was great. I was in the back, but it didn't matter to me. He played a lot of classics: Tears in heaven, Cocaine, Layla. Man that was a great concert. You're going to enjoy it.

i think i read he won't sing "Tears in Heaven" in concert anymore, but i would so love to hear it. that song is beautiful. here is another one of my favs from EC:

If I Could (Change the World)

If I could reach the stars
Pull one down for you
Shine it on my heart
So you could see the truth
That this love I have inside
Is everything it seems
But for now I find
It's only in my dreams

chorus:
That I can
Change the world
I would be the sunlight in your universe
You would think my love was really something good
Baby, if i could change the world

If I could be king, even for a day
I'd take you as my queen
I'd have it no other way
And our love would rule
this kingdom we have made
Til' then i'll be a fool
Wishing for the day

chorus

Baby if I could...change the world

I could change the world,
I would be the sunlight in your universe
You would think my love was really something good
Baby, if I could change the world (repeat 2x)

HAVE A GREAT TIME REDCOLOURS!!!

I won't rebuff his talent, he is obviously very talented. But if you listen to his older stuff, like with Cream and the Yardbirds, you'd hear that at one time his stuff was visionary. He could have been right up there with Page and Hendrix in terms of musical influence and really adding something to the development of music. Instead, he got into heroin and fiddled about playing watered down blues for 30 years. Sure, he plays it with talent, but he could have done SO MUCH MORE with the gifts he had.

<edited because I said Page and Plant instead of Page and Hendrix. Big time whoops there.>

I'd love to go, but the cheapest ticket in Denver is $85. Just a little too rich for my blood. I got mad when I paid that for the Summer Sanitarium tour, and that was like 8 hours long! (Should correct that, probably price is $85 + $412 Ticketmaster Charges )

way back in the day with Cream and the Yardbirds he sang differently, and was a different person, but with age we all evolve. it is inevitable. things that happen in our lives along the way change us. and for that you can't hold him to being the same as he was when he started, or for not going down a route that it seems he should have.

that being said, i think he has still done well.

well, it is set - last night i jumped in on the 1 ticket that my broker was offering. i got a call from them today, and they should have it ready for me by tomorrow.
as a single ticket, its more expensive by itself, but unfortunately i needed to use the $40 i would save (compared to if i had bought the 2 cheaper seats) to get a new mobo for my sister's dead computer. my broker only sells tickets in pairs, but it was good timing that they had a single. it wouldnt have mattered at any other time, as i always get 2, but my finances have sorta bottlenecked this week, and that the cutoff of buying the ticket(s) was yesterday. if i had gotten 2, id have given the other one away to any of you guys who may have wanted it.
now with all the stuff i had to spend on, im a bit dry. fortunately, i get paid tomorrow (just in time!) woohoo!!!

yep, i have to agree - slowhand with The Yardbirds and Cream was revolutionary. the soundscape you hear in your mind when you listen to any of those early recording would blow your mind. thats why the graffiti of "eric clapton is god" was all over the train stations and underground railways in his heyday.
but he's mellowed out, most likely due to drugs, personal strife, and probably the aversion to the sudden cult status that formed around him when he was younger. but being such a guitar nut that i am, i still love the way he phrases his solos in his later recordings. very soulful, as if he was emulating saxophonists, or vocal renditions, with of course your usual blend of the blues. i love his trademark where he will sit on a note for a whole verse - always cracks me up how he can pull it off and make it sound great! try to listen to ANY of his extended songs, and you will hear that one note being milked for all its goodness.

yep - VERY close. im 12 minutes away from the stadiums, next to Woodbury, NJ (gloucester cty), near rt 47.

all in all the concert was GREAT!
though like most concerts, its a promotional tour in reference for his latest album release. He played for 2 hours, playing a good mix of his new tunes (which is actually a remake of OLDER tunes by Robert Johnson), older ones from the 80's and 90s, and the classic ones (which really was just amazing!).
i came to see him, and i came to see him play, and i came to see him hoping he'll play the classic tunes - and he DID! 3rd song into the set, he starts some reggae-ish beat, and i knew immediately what it was - I SHOT THE SHERIFF!!! yeah!!! i wish i could shoot the zombies sitting throughout the song though...
he did some acoustic songs, but mostly from the nee album, redoing some Robert Johnson stuff (me and the devil, etc). but he didnt do Tears In Heaven. the feel of the concert overall is upbeat, and most of the songs had a rock feel to it - LOUD and FAST. the slowest part was when he played Wonderful Tonight. During the song, they panned the cameras to couples that were in an embrace and kissing - those were displayed on the 2 big screens. I wish i had someone to hug during that time...
But that was it - that was the slowest song he played. The rest were all boogie, 12-bar blues riff songs. The highlights for me were the classics - he played Sunshine of Your Love, Layla (in the original fast tempo, not the acoustic version, and he even played the piano-lead ending, which was a great treat for me. ive always wanted to hear that played live!), Cocaine (yes! i cant beleive he played that!), Let it Rain (what he opened with).
Though he didnt play Knockin on Heaven's Door (or Cant Find My Way Home). I think everyone had that in their minds, but it was alright, cuz he played BADGE, HAVE YOU EVER LOVED A WOMAN, and WHITE ROOM!!! man! talk about throwback!

the great part wasnt that he just played them, but you can tell that in the guitar breaks, when he does his solos, you can feel its not just a guitar exercise - he is playing each note like it was new, each phrase felt like it was true blues improvisation. and you CAN FEEL IT as you listen to each note, there is a conviction.
(i should go to more jazz or blues gigs. anyone know of any bars or clubs that do this regularly?)

another nice surprise was that parking was FREE! i got there arpund 8:20pm, and the parking lot at the wachovia center was closed - i guess it was full already, or the entrance was on the other side. i u-turned, and instead went to the parking lot across it, the one in the Lincoln financial field. to my surprise, no one was collecting money for parking - this was great! i parked, got out, looked around to check, maybe someone was actually collecting anything, but saw no one. the parking lot WAS half-full, and people were heading towards the wachovia center. anyways, i got back to the car after, and no ticket was on it. heh! that was awesome - no parking FEE!

so now im a happy man, even when i got a few troubles right now. i can say i saw Eric Clapton perform live, and it was great!
