men's highbar drama.

http://sportsline.com/olympics/story/7607401

that judging is just horrible. (comentary is even worse, but...)

1) I don't see how the russian's score was that low.
and
2)i don't see how paul hamm's score can even the Italian dude's score.

the italian dude's twisting dismount moves were crazy compared to the release and catch that hamm did....

this judging is just wrong.

Hamm's routine was weak, and that Russian's routine was otherworldly. The Russian takes one step on a dismount after a routine where he nailed every move he made on the bar, and he somehow gets a 9.7? If you're starting from a 10, that means that one step was worth .3? Whatever.

I loved how the crowd kept booing. I thought they might riot after Hamm got a higher score.

seriously. the whistling and the crap that the fans were giving them....craziness. never heard an olympic crowd get that rowdy. almost resembled shea stadium when John Rocker was pitching.

Maybe they should start scoring gymnastics like they do ice skating. One part on technical merit and one part on artistic impression. I thought the Russian's performance was very entertaining (second to the Italians), but I have no idea of the technical parts of it.

When we re-judge, we should rejudge EVERYTHING.

Quote:
So why not a second gold medal? Why not accommodate the upset Koreans and send everyone home happy? Well for one thing, you can make a pretty good case that, if you're going to go to the videotape, Yang shouldn't have won.

Yes, the videotape of the parallel bars showed the judges erred by assigning a 9.9 start value. But it showed something else, too. In the course of his routine, Yang had four holds on the bar, when the rules allow for a maximum of three. The deduction for that mistake? Two-tenths of a point.

The judges missed it.

Shouldn't the US be happy enough about getting a gold medal? Why feel so insecure about it that you have to write a whole article defending the legitimacy of it? You beat him, got the gold and the game's over. Any reason to kick dirt in the face of the defeated?

It's not written "By the US". It's written by a sports columnist. It's not a "pagentry" of aloofness and arrogance or insecurity; but rather a response to what is widely seen as anti-Hamm..ism. In any case, the article is an interesting read and brings up many good points.

BTW, I'm amazed the South Korean team isn't challenging the scoring on the High Bar too

Didn't Yang Tae Young win the Bronze? If so, then is Hamm supposed to trade the Gold for the Bronze? That would suck to go from Gold to Bronze so I don't blame the dude for not giving it up.

Sounds like "payback" for the "Roy Jones" travesty of Seoul in 1988....

One of the things about the SK gymnast is that if they did rescore him he'd probably be in the same boat. Several people have commented that had 1 too many releases during his program.

can you blame the greeks? half their athletes have either been disqualified for drugs or jumped off balconies.

and i love how suddenly the americans are the bad guys. it's because of us that the canadians got the duplicate gold last time. poor hamm. if the judges hadn't effed up the korean would have gotten an even lower score and somehow people think hamm should give up his medal. nice. very nice.

and apparently nobody watched the team event. the americans got knocked down large amounts for seemingly insiginificant mistakes. how many of them complained. in fact, the effing day before the olympics started, one of the judges told blaine that a routine that he had been doing for a year was now worth .1 less. how many protests were lodged then? how many fans booed that?

maybe the next time the koreans face the americans in some other sport they can do that skating thing again. that was pretty cool. especially since it was the soccer players that called the penalty on the korean skater.

fans need to just relax and contenders need to realize that the judges aren't pro-american.

Well, SK is ....SK.

With recent pro-nationalism movements, they really hate America...except when it comes to defence protection.

Hamm would end up with the silver and the Korean with the silver would get the bronze.

A few weeks ago Soul brother and his Filipino wife got back from staying in South Korea for over a year. They couldn't wait to get out of that place! He said the South Koreans were nasty and very xenophobic. Yeah I asked him if they had been that way due to his race and he replied the South Koreans just hate everyone. Guess that's what comes from having a pretty closed country for such a long time.
