Cool PA Renaissance Faire

one of the coolest gigs ive been to this summer!

i just got back from a 2hr drive (which isnt that bad, but im not fond of driving much), and it was well worth it!

a friend of mine is part of a Celtic band that plays there each year, and i finally got a chance to see them perform live, since ive only heard their CD (which is very good - very tight sound, like theyve been playing for years and years). they were as good as i heard them on the CD, and i'd gladly go again to see them one more time. He wears a kilt and the full garb, though i didnt look under it. i trust he is wearing it "authentic", and i dont want to see THAT.

it was fun to know about the workings behind the big show (as the WHOLE village is a big show unto itself), as some of the merchants there actually live in those "houses" (if only for the weekends).

more fun were the sights AND sounds of the Faire itself - the 'ye olde' english, the accents (though i admit some of them are really bad - i can do a better welsh or scottish accent, and i dont even look the part). theres a hat shop (which i got one, but only wore a few minutes), theres the different stages that had celtic and irish bands playing lively tunes, then theres the silly pirate ship among a forest of trees, auctioning off some posters, swords, brooms, and 2x4s - ha ha! how absurd!

the best was the Finale, where the Queen of England and the Queen Of Scotland sit down and be amused by court jesters, jugglers, acrobats, minstrels, and a whole host of dancers. It was essentially a play, but it was well-played. another friend of mine told me i should have seen the joust, but i didnt see it - i was enjoying the place too much.

looking at the pics i took, i just went thru 450+ pics and a lot of them came out really well - im surprised for the minolta dimage camera. i should be uploading them by tomorrow, and ill post the link here.

im glad i went today - great hot clear sunny day. one of my friends said she's going to the one in maryland (or was that delaware? i dunno), and invited me. i cant wait!

There was a Renaissance Festival near Pittsburgh... but that was probably on the Eastern side of PA, right?
