Independant Radio

Do you guys have an "Independant" radio station in your home town?

I've noticed that in LA and in San Diego, there are stations (103.1 and 94.9, respectively) that claim they go against the grain, and play whatever they want, etc etc....

but what comes out is mostly punk, some emo, and 80s inspired retro-rock.

i was just wondering how far this fad has gone...

independant, not pirate, since pirate radio is really inconsistent (its only on air at rather random times, at some obscure frequency channel)

but i wouldnt mind learning about what pirate stations there are out there...

The pirate stations here are TERRIBLE. We have a hip hop pirate station and a heavy metal station. They suck.

As for independent (meaning "not Clear Channel", I assume), I don't know if we have any of those. NPR is pretty independent, and that's my favorite station.

Chicago is a bleedin' radio wasteland. It's almost all corporate, so I listen to NPR.

However..

A new station came on the air recently called "Nine FM"-- it's owned by a local businessman who runs some time-brokered stations, and its philosophy is such:

"Conceived as an antidote to "corporate radio" with its constricted formats and homogeneous playlists, "Nine FM" is the creation of two Chicago radio veterans -- Harvey Wells, vice president and radio group manager for parent company Newsweb Corp., and Sky Daniels, director of programming." (Robert Feder, Chicago Sun-Times)

"Nine FM's" slogan is "we play anything." When I could get the station (they're south of the city, I'm north), I've heard Nirvana, The Guess Who, The Beatles, and Aretha Franklin in the same half hour. I'm curious to see if they can keep it up.

Here in Calgary (and a few other cities in Canada), there's a station called JACK FM. Their slogan is "Playing What We Want" and that pretty much sums it up. They generally play music from the 70's and up (minus disco music) -- in other words, hearing something like "This Love" (Maroon 5), "Paradise by the Dashboard Light" (Meatloaf), and something by Def Leppard all in the same set (if not back to back) is not uncommon.

They don't do requests, but there has been many instances where I've thought of an older song that I haven't heard in a long time, and they've gone and played it.

I think that 103.1 and 94.9 are better than what's out there though... Like Kroq
