Star Wars Trilogy on DVD
I seem to remember someone saying that there were several different versions of the DVD sets coming out. (Such as a Higher definition version) Yet I could find nothing to support this claim other than what the original poster claimed. (I also could not find the original post with the different versions listed)
Is there any credence to it or was that just pure speculation as I cant find any information substantiating it. Thanks. BTW, Frys has it for $36.99 on Tuesday

The ones coming out are the re-released version of the late 90s. Lucas refuses to offer the original because he hates the original apparently.

There has also been some minor modifications since the "Special Editions."
For a complete list, check out the last page from IGN's Review (Yes I know about the ads on IGN -- sorry 'bout that). ...and it's available in widescreen (silver box) and full screen (gold box). That's it. |

A late-70's movie is a late-70's movie. I kind of like seeing those translucent squares around the space ships as they move across the screen The effects were good then... melding in the new techniques makes the old look bad.Dave. |

Once again, I am trying to find out if you are just speculating that an HD version will come out on the basis that the technology will be developed or actually have some proof of this edition coming out shortly? |

The only versions being sold by Alliance Entertainment (one of the largest distributors of CDs/DVDs in the nation) are:
Star Wars Trilogy [4 Discs] [WS] Star Wars Trilogy [4 Discs] [P&S] Currently there are no other products slated to be released. |

Even if it's a rumor with no substantial evidence at this point, from past experience with most legendary pieces, I think it's still very very likely. |

Still pissed that they use the new anakin in the movie. I don't condone calling a movie by the same name if they "Update it" bunch of BS in my opinion. Han Solo should ALWAYS shoot first.

5. Jedis don't scream The 1997 special edition version of "The Empire Strikes Back" was changed so Luke wails as he jumps off the platform in Cloud City. In the only instance of Lucas undoing a later alteration (sadly, Greedo still shoots first on the DVD of "A New Hope"), he's taken it off the DVD edition. Maybe he realized Jedis (even ones in training) don't scream. 4. Boba Fett has a new voice Since Boba Fett is a clone of Jango Fett, and Jango Fett is played by Temura Morrison, doesn't it make sense that he should sound like him, too? That's exactly what George Lucas thought, so Morrison was brought in to revoice the four lines of dialogue (yes, believe it or not there are only four!) Boba spoke in the original trilogy. 3. A new and improved Jabba Remember that dodgy-looking computer-generated Jabba they inserted into the 1997 re-release of "A New Hope"? Well, he looks a little less dodgy this time around thanks to some improved CGI. 2. The emperor's new clothes In the original version of "The Empire Strikes Back," the emperor Darth Vader speaks to via hologram was played by a woman in a mask (!) and voiced by Clive Revill. Again, in the interests of consistency, Ian McDiarmid -- who portrays the emperor in "Return of the Jedi" and the prequel trilogy -- now appears in that scene with an added line or two of dialogue. 1. The big finale The 1997 special edition of "Return of the Jedi" added a few "Star Wars" worlds joining the celebration of the Empire's demise at the end of the film. For the DVD, they've added Naboo, a planet that figures prominently in the prequel trilogy. Also, Anakin Skywalker is noticeably different this time around. When he removes his Darth Vader helmet, he now has no eyebrows! It's probably safe to assume he singes them off in his battle with Obi-Wan Kenobi in next summer's "Revenge of the Sith" and a change had to be made. But the most noticeable change -- and perhaps one some "Star Wars" diehards will have a tough time stomaching -- is Hayden Christensen (who plays young Anakin in the prequel trilogy) now appearing in the scene where the "force ghosts" of Anakin, Obi Wan, and Yoda smile at Luke. One thing's for sure, there's plenty for fans to debate -- that is, until the trilogy comes out yet again on another format in the future and Mr. Lucas makes his inevitable changes ... ---------------------------------------- that christensen replacement is complete BS. i can't believe lucas did that. |

Ok I have no problem with Hayden Christensen. But to put him in the ending is just wrong. I am sure Hayden would agree.... I haven't watched all the special features yet, maybe Lucas explains it..... maybe not... but gee.... no eyebrows I can live with I guess..... but....They still have the old actor who played Anakin is still in the credits... yet he was CUT..... damn Lucas

ya - that's dumb. they show obi and yoda as aged characters.. so why did they not keep anakin as an aged character.
if they were gonna change it - the should have chopped in the face of ewan macgregor for obiwan as well.....

I havent seen the movie yet (amazon still hasnt shipped my order) but yea, that is kinda hokey to put christensen in like that. i can live with it if he looks aged along with obi-wan. but if he looks young, then i'd imagine its really out of place. as for all the other alterations, its Lucas' movies. he can do whatever the hell he wants with it. deal with it. you're all gonna end up buying the dvds anyways. |

Well put. While I myself would like to see the original version released on DVD, the fact that George Lucas made the prequels (with better-looking special effects than the original) meant that the originals had to be re-done to match the overall appearance of the entire saga. I know that I'd hate to watch the first three movies during a marathon, then start the fourth and wonder "what happened?" (this would be the stance taken by someone who hadn't seen Star Wars yet (yes, there are bound to be some people who haven't). I guess I'm not as much of a purist as some however, since I don't mind the changes (Lucas can do whatever he wants with his own movies). I did buy the DVD yesterday, and I will happily watch them very soon (and finally see "Return of the Jedi" for the first time*). * Yes I admit it -- I have not seen the ewoks.. Go ahead and mock me, although I still stand by my comments above. Last edited by Devhux : 09-22-2004 at 01:04 PM. |
