Question Trading Spouses/Wife Swap and Nanny 911/Super Nanny (FOX/ABC)

What the heck? I'm watching MNF right now and ABC is coming out with a "new" series called "Super Nanny".

Here's the background as far as I know it:

FOX comes out with Trading Spouses. ABC follows with Wife Swap.

FOX comes out with Nanny 911. ABC follows now with Super Nanny.

Am I going insane? WTF is ABC doing?

Most of those are actually ABC's show's that FOX is ripping off and putting out before hand. Hence why when Wife Swap came out, they said something to the effect of "The original".

Cut to the chase here-without big brother-none of these shows (including Survivor) would have ever happened...(I'm pretty sure Big Brother was the first one to appear-and it hasn't been any good since one legged Eddie won the loot)...the only shows worth watching now are Survivor and Amazing Race in my book.
(I am dying to go on Amazing Race...they have less chance of eating bugs than Survivor does)

Depends on how you think reality TV is defined. Hidden camera shows have been around for awhile. PBS had that show "An American Family" a LONG time ago. And, of course, "The Real World" was out in the early 90's. I agree that Big Brother was never as good as the first season, the "surprises" that they had this season were horrible. I think Survivor is one of the better shows, but the most recent season was terrible IMO. The Amazing Race is by far the best reality show out there, much better than any Fear Factor or any of that other crap.

The ABC shows may be "first", but I like the Fox versions better. Except they stretch it out by repeating everything 2 or 3 times. Nanny 911 amd Trading Spounses would be much better as a 1/2 hour shows.

I used to be hooked to Amazing Race but it got pretty old that in every episode - 40 minutes out of the hour they show them trying to get tickets at the airport, it's the same thing every freaking time!

the only "reality" show I watch now is America's next top model.

Honestly, I really loved "The Mole"... until they started using "celebrities" in it and they started screwin' around the the air scheduling.

The Mole was the only reality show where I actually felt like I was playing the game as well.

Did you guys see that Trading Spouces where the Vegan lady switched places with the Cajun lady? My girlfriend knows the Vegan lady and she is getting a barrage of hate mail for her appearance in that show. I have only seen that episode, and to me she came off like a real witch. I don't know if it's true or not but I read the email that she sent and it sounds like her life has been shattered.

i'd wondered about that... that was the only episode of Trading Spouses that I saw, and at the end I was furious with the vegan woman for being such a narrow minded witch. looked online, and there was tons of forum threads devoted to trashing her. what does your gf say she's like in RL? is it a case of reality TV distorting reality for ratings, or is she really that bad?

i thought Survivor was the first reality in the current crop. I dunno though. i realize that Real World was on way before, but I'm talking about the broadcast networks. i dislike most reality shows and don't watch any of them. i watched Big Brother a few seasons ago because my roommates liked it, but that's about it.

A little of both actually. One part that I read from the ladies email was that she was made to look bad when she disciplined the dog for peeing inside the house. The way the show set it up made it look like she hit the dog even though she was supposed to be an animal lover, which portrayed her as a hypocrite. However in her email she says the dog was living a pretty crappy life being chained up outside 24/7. She said she took the dog on walks everday and fed him well and brought him inside. When the dog urinated inside she says she disciplined him the same way she disciplines her own dogs, by putting their noses in it spanking them a bit. But since the show only showed her hitting the dog, they didn't give the impression that she was making the dog's life better, but was rather abusive and hypocritical.

However, she definitely came off as a hypocrite in other areas I thought. She was telling the Cajun folks that the food they were eating causes cancer and that being a vegan is the way to go. But then they show her smoking, which even if it was taken out of order is highly hypocritical. If she is that concerned with cancer she shouldn't smoke, or at least not tell others how to live while she indulges in the number one cancer producing lifestyle.

Either way I know that this lady is getting a lot of backlash from a lot of people including other vegans. Many are upset that she appeared on the show because they feel that their cause took a big step backwards. Although this lady volunteered for the show to get the word out about veganism, she really put a black mark on it or atleast that's what many believe. Personally I believe that she should have known what she was getting into, because the big networks are not going to find some level headed vegan to "get out the news". They are going to bring in someone who they know will be controversial, and spin it in a way that it seems very dramatic. However I do feel bad for her for having her life thrown into disarray.

well actually-if you think of it-I wonder if Candid Camera with Alan Funk was probably one of, if not the first reality show..
Fear Factor grosses me out to much..man, the day those girls had to eat horse rectum just about put me into seizures from gagging..I don't know but I don't think there is enough money in the world to make me eat drink 100 year old eggnog, reindeer balls, and rectum of any sort. The challenges-no problem with the exception of being stuck under the ice to find the hole to get out of-I'd panic and drown.

I really enjoyed The Mole as well. It was thought-provoking, interesting, and challenging for viewers and contestants. The "Celebrity Mole" was so dumb, and they were of course pseudo-celebrities who they even repeated 2 or 3 of them for the second season. But it was an intelligent reality show. And I liked Anderson Cooper, and watch him on CNN sometimes just because he hosted that.

I thought Survivor preceded Big Brother. Oh and yeah Real World. Real World and Road Rules are the only reality shows I ever watch these days, but that's not network TV of course.

Well, that's what I meant when I said "hidden camera shows". And Survivor did debut first. It started in late May or early June of 2000 and Big Brother started early July.

I hate this stuff. Even if Survivor was the first (I'm not debating that it is), I still don't like it. Family Guy and the Simpson's rule all!
