Zathura

This is a cheap version of Jumanji, without all of the interesting facets.
The storyline is interesting, but not filmed with enough depth.
The characters were so-so and often seemed to show a lack of acting skill, like it was done as a school project.
The special effects were pretty good, but just not enough to hold everything together.

There is some level of violence that will scare small kids, but there were also some scenes that drew chuckles from the audience.

I'll give it a C...maybe wait for the video and rent it.

Thumbs down The Weatherman

last night I braved the cold and went to see PRIME with a friend..once we got there they had changed the time of the movie and since we aren't fond of missing the first 10 minutes of a movie we decided to go see THE WEATHERMAN instead..the girl at the counter told us the movie was amusing and very good..APPARENTLY SHE DIDNT SEE IT..
omg I was ready to put a bullet in my head about halfway through it..it was torture sitting there..
IS THERE ANY MOVIE THAT NICK CAGE WAS IN that ISN'T depressing? seriously..we couldn't think of ONE last night..
this movie was slow slow slow..predictable, depressing, boring, and loaded with wayyyy too much bad language to make it funny...(I don't find a 14 year old girl calling someone a C*nt amusing -EVER). Michael Caine was awful in this movie..he sounded and acted like he was on way too much lithium, and the wife, well hardly a great actress..the plotline sucked, and the "amusing" parts you have all seen on TV (when he gets hit with food over and over)..don't waste your dough on this one..it sucks.

Oops! Can a mod please move this to Bens Movie thread? Thanks..

Jarhead - A movie that dishonors the US Marine Corps

In case anyone is considering watching this movie, especially in light of Veterans Day yesterday, I was forwarded some e-mails regarding this horrible storytelling of the United States Marine Corps, hu ah!

Please, I implore you, do not patronize this garbage movie. Hollywood has soiled itself and now it is trying to dishoner the Marine Corps.

Yoh!!!!! I tried to read the book----- Couldn't even make
it to the second chp......Got so pissed I wrotr the author
and told him how unimpressed I was with his crap. I mentioned that no Marine I knew would consider even wipping his ass with it. So Don't you know Hollywood makes a movie..NO Way will I go to see that.

All over the internet, Marines in general are ripping this movie apart.

Yesterday, I went to see the movie "Jarhead".

In my opinion it was an INSULT TO THE UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS AND ITS MARINES.

The dialogue consisted of nothing bur filthy language, and depicted the young Marines as sex perverts, and that was the only thing on their minds. They continually insulted their buddies about mail lhey received from their girlfriends and/or wives back home. The "action" part once they got to the desert was a little interesting, but if I had been alone, I never would have gotten to see that part. I was ready to walk out of the theatre after the first 20 minutes of the picture.I know the morality of today is not what it was back in the 1940s, but I think this as going much too far.

This is only MY opinion, but for the sake of the Reputation of the Marine Corps. I felt duty bound to "spread the word".

Shopgirl.

Now I read the book before I saw the movie, Great Book.

The first thing I will say, and its noticable throughout the entire movie... the music.

Good god it got annoying. I felt Like I was watching a overblown art-film... but the music... was.. pretty bad.

The constantly (and i mean CONSTANTLY) recycled the same tune over and Over and OVER again. It became quite a bit mind numbing.

The movie does not stay too well with the book (they cut out ALOT, and edited how the movie flowed which caused it to be very disjointed). The acting is quite good, Though Ray Porter's part could have been a bit.. better. I find myself saying that when Steve Martin is playing him.. and Steve Martin Wrote the book.... He just felt a bit too stiff even for Ray Porter (though I could not imagine any other person playing the part).

The movie was a bit of a disappointment (though most are disappointments when compared to the book). If they drummed out the music, and kept more to the Actual character (I have to admit, they did rewrite Jeremy's Two Month Excursion pretty well).

I'd give it a C. And thats a higher value than I'd actually give it. It was really about a D+.

Read the book, its a bit better than the movie.

Thumbs up Harry Potter 4

I saw HP 4 at a special advance screening Sunday and it was AWESOME! They did some major cutting as we all knew they would, but the final product was very well done and I didn't really miss the stuff they cut out.

The movie was 2.5 hours, but really only felt like 1. I am an avid fan of the books, so non-fans may have a different reaction to the length.

The child actors (Radcliffe, Watson, & Grint) did a marvelous job as usual, and I wasn't bothered by the fact that they seem to be growing up faster than the characters they are playing! HP & The Order of the Peoenix is set to be released in 2007 sometime (I'd guess summer), and it looks like these actors are signed up to start shooting it soon.

So, overall, this one gets an A++ in my book!

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

You noticed that i let Ben post first..... i knew he would tell it exactly how it was....i will agree with Ben...it was very good and i am so glad that i had that opportunity to see it.....it was 2 1/2 hours long and in a few places it was slow to me.... but it did keep my attention... i would like to read the books so i can learn more about Harry Potter....Does have alot of Action/Adventure, Kids/Family and Science Fiction/Fantasy.
I myself did not find anything frightening about the movie.

I bet someone could find me at the next Harry Potter show....

Thanks again. This is always a great time of year. With the holidays & Potter. For some reason, I thought the Potter movies came out every year around this time. Or perhaps the debut of the next book alternates with a movie. One more year for J.K. Rowling!

Capote - A

Movie about the author Truman Capote, author of Breakfast at Tiffany's. Capote attempts to find a non-fiction story worthy of a novel, and in doing so investigates the murder of a family in the midwest. In his investigation he becomes enamored with the story of one of the alleged murderers. Very interesting movie, as well as a bit of a history lesson. I knew nothing of Capote before this movie, but now I am interested in finding out more about his work. Phillip Seymour Hoffman (sp) gives an Oscar caliber performance.

A, leaning towards A +

Thanks for the review! Is it worth seeing on the big screen or worth the rental wait? Who else is in the movie? And, what are some of Capote's other works? Heard of him in literature, but never really read any of his works.

Spike, to answer your question, there is no set time schedule for the films or the books. I think Book 5 took like 2 years to come out (after Book 4) and Book 6 was like 1.5 years after 5, so no one knows about 7.

In regards to the movies, #1 came out in Summer 2001 I think, #2 in Summer 2002, #3 in Summer 2004, and #4 Winter 2005. Like I said earlier, I heard that #5 isn't expected until 2007. They wouldn't release a blockbuster like this in, say, February, it would either be June/July or Nov/Dec.

Walk The Line

Excellent movie.... I found out things about Johnny Cash that i didn't know about...
The movie goes into the early years of the music legend, an artist who transcended musical boundaries to touch people around the globe. His music changed the world. The movie was awesome and Reese Witherspoon is the right girl for june.
He had many followers from the prisons who thought he was a convict at one time and they thought he could understand them.

The movie was 2 hours and 15 minutes, Drama, Musical/Performing Arts and Biopic
I would rate this movie at a B+

Peachie, I heard on Ebert & Roeper that Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon sang all the songs in the movie. I heard a snippet of Joaquin singing "Ring of Fire" and was totally blown away.

I was also very impressed with the movie. I think that it's a must-see for Johnny Cash fans, and a good watch for everyone else. My only complain was that they didn't go into his career after 1968, and I would have liked to see his big come-backs over the years. Also, don't expect to see anyone win supporting actor for this film because Joaquin and Reese were such major characters that the rest were barely there, with a bit of a performance from Johnny's movie wife and dad. Even the Jerry Lee Lewis, Roy Orbison and Elvis Presley roles were almost forgettable.
I'd also give it a B+ for most of us, A+ for J.C. fans. The songs got everyone rockin' in the audience.

They did an excellent job with those songs!
The only one that I *THINK* was live broadcast was the song near the end where Johnny and June Carter sang in Folsom Prison. It just sounded a little better than the rest.

I saw Harry Potter last night - only thing I can say is that the dragon sequence on the roof of Hogwarts is worth the entire price of admission... breathtaking effects. It truly looks like they captured some dragon in Eastern Europe and set him loose in England. Spectacular!!

There was a documentary that explored the theory of dragons possibly being real -- and they had the same animation crew involved -- VERY realistic indeed.

...and I agree that the dragon sequence was breathtaking (and definately kept me on the edge of my seat).

I wouldn't say it's a must see in the theatre, so you could wait till it comes out on video. But if you are interested in this guys' life, I would say check it out for sure.
