Saw Hairspray tonight...
Lots of fun dialog and amusing scenes, reminiscent of the fun Broadway musicals of the 50s and 60s. Combined with the fun music and great acting, it came across quite well as a light-hearted view of the racial differences and push for integration in the early 1960s. I'd give is a very strong B. -- Afterwards, I snuck in and watched the 2nd half of Harry Potter. Missed a few of the happenings but found it to be a good continuation of the other films. I still think I would have paid to see it in full, but not sure that it's worth paying to see the first half. Given that, I would probably have given it a ranking of A-, slightly off because some of the scenes seem a bit erratic and hard to follow, but generally very interesting with great graphics.

OK, I finally got to the theatere with my girlfriend Sarah to see HP5. Well done! As I have previously posted, I was very afraid that the new director would cut too much out, but I was happy with what was there. It didn't seem slow to me at any part, probably b/c I'm such a huge fan of the books. So, I'll give it an A-.
I pictured Gwap bigger, and wanted to see Umbridge try and chuck out Hagrid, and why did Umbridge have to give the OWL tests? I probably wouldn't have been 100% happy with a 5-hour adaptation, so I must enjoy the scenes that were there. The real treat comes tomarrow for me when Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Book 7) comes out! I plan to get it at Costco when they open (10 a.m.) and have no plans of putting it down until I am finished reading it Saturday night. That way no one can ruin it for me!

Went today to see Hairspray with John Travolta. What an awesome movie. Since I was 12 in 1960 the music and race issues were right out of my childhood. 6 of us went and we all loved it. There was not a bad scene or actor in the whole film. Seeing and hearing Christopher Walken sing made our day. What was really great was the theatre was filled with families. I know Disney has been advertising the movie because Amanda Bynes is in it. But it a great film for everyone. And btw, I dont know why but when I heard the lyric, the blacker the fruit(or was it berry?) the sweeter the juice, I immediately thought of DF. Strange huh ?

Harry Potter: Order of the Phoenix
Went to see Order of the Phoenix today, and overall I was reasonably impressed. The casting for Umbridge was PERFECT, and Dumbledore wasn't arrogant like he was in Goblet of Fire (although admittedly he had a smaller role here).
My main complaint was that it felt extremely rushed (such as the end scene with Sirius). Yes, I realize this was based off a rather lengthy book, but the movie wasn't even 2 1/2 hours. I felt this one should have been closer to 3 hours with how much there was to tell. I do have one main recommendation though -- if you have an IMAX theater in your area that supports 3D, go see it there. Only about 15 minutes towards the end is in 3D, but it was 15 minutes that was well worth it (and here I was concerned, because I thought 3D meant those silly red/blue glasses that don't do anything for me -- I was sure proven wrong here). A- for me.

We saw hairspray yesterday, and it was hilarious and wonderful. Total A+ movie. Not a bad song in the bunch.

Simpsons the Movie
The new Simpsons movie was funny in an abbreviated way. There were still a good amount of clever jokes. Any jokes that were related to religion were hilarious. The humor was mostly adult and the kids had some physical humor to laugh at. Overall, I'd give the movie a B.
The movie is really short, just over an hour! I had lots of giggles and a few guffaws. |

I saw The Bourne Ultimatium with my fiancee on opening night and it was EXCELLENT! It very nicely ended the trilogy and I seriously doubt there will be a sequel. Great action, Matt Damon was good, and Julia Styles was great as always. A+ In my book! I'm surprised I'm the first one here to review this one.

BD - I was there too and agree with you , it's an A+ flick. Although it does leave the movie with a chance for another sequel. Matt himself has been doing the talk show circuit the last two weeks and even said this: " If we we end up doing another sequel, it will probably be called The Bourne Redundancy". Last night went to the Rush Hour 3 preview. I'll give it a B+. Lots of funny moments as usual for this trilogy, which was long overdue. I went in not expecting alot even though the trailers I'd seen up to that point were pretty good, but you never know and since # 2 came out in 2001, maybe they lost some of that flair since then. I was surprised, the movie is fairly strong throughout, and of course it is left open for another sequel, which we'll probably see in 10 years. BTW - Jackie is starting to show his age (53), so when does he stop doing his own stunts? An what about Chris Tucker? Has he done anything substantial since the last movie?

Went and saw "No Reservations" with Catherine Zeta-Jones and AAron Eckhart. It was a cute summer movie. Nothing fantastic but not bad either. Went right where you think it will go. He is a hottie. Abigal Breslin is the token cute kid. I give it a C+

a little late, but went to last week's preview of Stardust. Pretty good, nice concept. A solid B+ ! I especially liked (as well as the rest of the audience) Robert De Niro's character, but you'll just have to go see the movie for yourself to know what I'm referring to. At least worthy of a matinee.

I doubt it, since he got $20 MILLION for rush hour 2. He's most likely been too busy spending money.

I also saw Stardust last weekend and really enjoyed it. I'd give it an A- and agree that it is worth at least a Matinee or rental. It is a fantasy movie kinds similar to Bridge To Terebithia, but better than that one, which I'd prolly give a B-.

Resurrecting the Champ
Resurrecting the Champ
This is the story of an ex-boxer who is now living on the streets. A journalist (whose father was a famous journalist) is living in his father's shadow and looking for a way to elevate his career. He talks to the ex-boxer and finds his story interesting about how he was on the verge of becoming one of the all-time greats, but got knocked out, quit the business, and retired with barely any recognition. The story becomes a big hit but the life of the journalist changes as more information about the boxer is revealed. The acting was quite good, the story had some interesting twists, and the morals thrown in were touching. Definitely one of those stories that is going to get recognition at awards time, but I think it fell just a tiny bit short so I'll give it a solid B+. (Story based on true events.) |

Wow, we must have watched two different movies. I thought Rush Hour 3 was the worst movie I've seen this year. I saw it for free but I still feel that Chris Tucker and Jackie Chan owe me for the two hours that I wasted. F- |

Wow Sixpac... I do believe that F- is the lowest rating ever given to a movie in the 20-page history of this thread. I just thought I'd point attention to that. I guess I hadn't started this thread when "F-Worthy" movies such as The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Gigli, and Rob Schneider's "The Animal" came out.

heh heh, I guess I could raise my rating to an F+ because I did not leave the theater like I did during "The Singing Detective." I also laughed once.
However, the theater's air conditioning was my main reason for staying so I'm torn... |

The Singing Detective was a mess. The plot line was incredibly difficult to follow. I'm a huge fan of Robert Downey Jr. who was the lead. Although he struggles with his demons, the dude can act! But the movie tried to be too "artsy-fartsy." I'm all for an art house flick but this was really over the top.
Rush Hour 3 was just not funny. Period. The scenes were contrived and let's face it, Jackie Chan is no spring chicken. He can still jump but his fight scenes are not as spry as they once were. In the original Rush Hour the jokes were clever and hilarious. The jokes in this third installment were dull and fell flat. |

The King of Kong- A++++++++
I went to a screening of "The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters." This movie is a documentary about Donkey Kong. Yes, I said it. Donkey Kong! The villainous and cocky Billy Mitchell holds the world record for the highest score in Donkey Kong which he attained in 1982.
The record is now being challenged by "nice guy" Steve Wiebe who throughout his life tried to be great and has consistently fallen short. His grit and determination to prove to his family and himself that nice guys can finish first sets up a showdown of epic proportions between the two rivals. This documentary was fantastic. You really cheer on Steve and boo/hiss at Billy. Billy's cockiness is portrayed by statements such as, "Everything I say is controversial, sort of like the abortion issue." Another great part of the film was the portrayal of the gamers who have participated in competitive gaming since the 80's. Those guys are absolutely hilarious, my favorite being "Mr. Awesome." This movie is totally worth the $10 to see. A+ |

I have seen Superbad twice already. Yeah. I loved it(!). But - the funny part is seeing it with a (former) nerd buddy of mine. He hated it. "Too close" he said. Too close to what I can't imagine? This is one farce that takes every joke WAY beyond it's normal course!!! It's a hard "r" rating, but truly hilarious. Very much an adult comedy in some ways (I found myself laughing at a LOT of jokes that went over the teenagers' heads in the audience) but the aim is a lot lower for a lot of the humor. :O Come with an open mind and you'll have a great time. And jeez, don't bring a date. LMAO
