The Darjeeling Limited

The Darjeeling Limited is the latest film by Wes Anderson (best known for Rushmore and The Royal Tenenbaums). Rushmore is one of my favorite movies of all time so I am always interested in Anderson's films.

This movie followed three brothers played by Owen Wilson, Adrien Brody and Jason Schwartzman on a soul-searching jaunt through India on a train named The Darjeeling Limited. Each brother has his own quirky personality and each actor plays his part very well.

I enjoyed this movie. It's visually stunning and there were plenty of chuckles. This film is done in Wes Anderson's signature style and anyone with a dry sense of humor will love it. There is a cameo by Natalie Portman in the short film leading into the main flick. In the main movie there is an excellent cameo by Anjelica Houston.

I give the movie an A-.

I agree about Good Luck Chuck. I got exactly what I expected from the movie. Jessica Alba was really cute.

Thumbs down The Heartbreak Kid

I saw The Heartbreak Kid this weekend with Sarah for sheer lack of any better movie out to see. It looked kinda funny, and I will be getting married in 5.5 months. The movie sucked. Ben Stiller stooped pretty low on this one. I expected more from The Farrely Brothers. Sarah and I walked out of the theatere about an hour and 15 minutes into this one, 30 minutes after we started talking about leaving. I want those 30 minutes back.

The premise of the movie is that Stiller marries this chick he barely knows and is shocked when she turns out to be a complete train wreck, both in bed and otherwise. He proceeds to almost cheat on her on their honeymoon in Cancun. I won't waste any more forum space on this one. It was not funny and definitely not worth the price of admission. D

I'm not sure which movie that is, but Heartbreak Kid definitely isn't it. Maybe it was Good Luck Chuck?

I saw that previewed on The Movie review show (formerly Ebert and Roeper).

It was liked but they said it was a bit bizarre (and not realistic enough) how the whole town accepted this blowup doll as the emotionally-disturbed guy's girlfriend. But they likened it to the Edward Scissorhands quaintness.

(Sorry, but i forgot the name--not "Chuck" either.)

It looks cleverly odd, so I want to see it. I heard some critics were upset by the non-realistic-ness of the plot, but I don't think it needs to be (heck, how logical are most movies??)

Hey Ben et all,
Most theatres will give you your money back if the movie sucks and you're dissatisfied. Try. Or at the very least they'll give you passes to come back to another movie. I mean come on - it's $18.

If you have to walk out of the theater in the middle of the movie because it is so bad, then I'd say it deserves an F-

Dan In Real Life

Dan In Real Life

This is the story of a single father (Steve Carrell) of 3 daughters who go on their annual visit to grandma's house in Rhode Island. He really hasn't dated since his wife died 4 years earlier. While there, he meets a really nice woman in a bookstore and they hit it off but she's already involved. Shortly we find out that she's involved with his brother, who thinks he has finally found "the one."

The story continues as these two try to figure out how to deal with their new-found feelings, while he gets into deeper and deeper trouble trying to deal with his daughter's maturing needs.

Although the storyline had lots of holes, they seemed mostly insignificant with such an interesting cast of characters and interactions. Certainly a good date film, but maybe also a good film for single parents to learn how others may be dealing with their situations. I kept thinking it's not that great a film but I came away from it feeling like they tied things together well, albeit somewhat predictably. I'll give it a solid B rating.

No Country for Old Men

This is the new movie from the Coen Brothers (Fargo, The Big Lebowski) and it is one of the best movies I've seen all year. The movie had me biting my nails and the woman next to me was hiding her eyes during many of the scenes.

The movie is set in the Texas countryside. Josh Brolin's character stumbles across a drug deal gone bad and takes off with a suitcase full of money. Javier Bardem plays a hit man who is trying to get the money back and Tommy Lee Jones plays an old sheriff who's tracking both of them.

WHAT A THRILLER. Javier Bardem's character is the creepiest person I've seen in a movie in years. I kept thinking about his face after leaving the theater. He is really chilling. And Josh Brolin was fantastic! Who knew the kid from Goonies could act like that?

Overall, an A+. The movie's pace is deliberately slow and the lack of music in a lot of the scenes really made the audience cringe. It makes my skin crawl just thinking about it.

I, too, saw No Country and it reminded me of two other "Texas" movies: Lone Star and The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada. These three movies move along at a snails pace, feature spectacular Texas countryside (it's actually Texas too, not monument valley etc) and interestingly almost no music within the scenes.
Rent 'em all.

Alvin and the Chipmunks

I saw Alvin and the Chipmunks this morning.

This is the story of 3 talking chipmunks who befriend a struggling song-writer (David Seville) and make his life better yet much more chaotic. David's record-producer friend eventually helps thm find success but at a cost...

The graphics of the chipmunks were excellent, and the story was not bad, but there were a few places that it didn't flow very well, especially at the beginning where they got the chipmunks to meet David. The acting was decent enough.

For adults, I'd give it a "B" (especially if you liked the Chipmunk songs and cartoons as a kid) and for kids aged about 10 years old, it would probably get an "A" based on audience reaction. There were a lot of young kids there (agout 4 or 5) who chuckled in a lot of scenes, but I think some of the scenes didn't move quickly enough for them when the movie explored various relationships 9loev and business), so younger kids might get bored in a few areas.

All in all, I had more fun with the movie than I expected

Enchanted

Enchanted

This is the story of a wanna-be princess who meets a prince in fairytale (animated) land. The prince's mom doesn't like her and tricks here into falling into a well that takes her through a vortex to New York City where she is confused and lost but (unknowingly) uses here innocence and charm to befriend a divorce lawyer. Eventually the Prince comes looking for her and relentlessly trots through NY with his very cavalier attitude. Meanwhile the lawyer and princess share ideas about how the world should work ("happiness is what you make it" versus "reality is not always happy".)
Will the prince find his girl? Will the henchman that the queens sent successfully sabotage things?

All in all, the acting was a bit corny, but much of that was consistent with what you would expect from a cartoon character (who's only ever lived in a fantasy world) who has arrived in this mysterious real world. A lot of the silly songs were reminiscent of some of the old-time fun Disney movies.

This was another one that pleasantly surprised me, and I'll give it an "A-"...it loses a mark because I thought the ending was just a bit too far-fetched after initially integrating the fantasy characters into the real world rather well.

Red face Enchanted and Waitress

I saw Enchanted a few weeks back with Sarah (4 months till our wedding!). I'd give it a B+. It was cute enough, but lacked that true magic of some other Disney films. It is worth renting.

We rented Waitress with Keri Russell on Friday. The movie was all about pregnancy and cheating on your spouse. It had the "indie" film look to it (I know it won some awards at a film festival), and was definitely low budget. I didn't like seeing Russell's husband in the film treat her like a piece of property and hit her once. The ending was the only redeeming part of the movie, which I of course won't give away. I'll give it a C-.

I just saw this Friday. I would have to say that I really liked it! It put a smile on my wife's and my faces for the rest of the night.

Saw the premier of I Am Legend last night and give it a solid B+ . The movie is mostly just him and his dog roaming a deserted New York City due to a deadly virus. Lots of action of course and a bit of drama mixed in. Will Smith does a good job in his role, but I think he did better in his last film - "The Pursuit of Happyness" which he got an oscar nod but didn't win. I think he will get an oscar sometime in the future, but not for this movie. Still, this movie is sure worth the price of a regular admission.

Also saw Hitman about 3 weeks ago and so far no one has commented on it. I thought it was fairly well done and give it a solid B. Worth the price of a matinee.

I also saw I am Legend and I'd give it a solid B+ to an A-. This kind of role, where it is focused almost exclusively on the protagonist, takes a very good actor to pull it off and Will Smith does an excellent job. I saw it in a matinée yesterday, and I'd say it was worth the price of full admission. The ending was reshot because it tested horribly, so hollywood has once again fracked with a good book just to make a buck.

Still, Will Smith does an excellent job.

I went to the screening of "The Savages." The story line follows a brother and sister (played by Philip Seymour Hoffman and Laura Linney) who are at a crossroads in their lives. Their estranged, aging father is struggling with dementia and needs to be placed in a nursing home. The movie focuses on the emotions dealing with this situation with some gentle humor sprinkled in.

The movie dealt with the situation honestly and doesn't sugar coat the hardships of dealing with elder parents. The acting was PHENOMENAL. However the pace is excruciatingly slow. Many times a slow movie pace is an integral part of the plot but in "The Savages" I felt the pace was detrimental.

This movie will definitely strike a chord with baby boomers. I give it a B-.

Saw I Am Legend as well..... I'd give it a B+ solid.... man it was scarier than I thought... too many needles for me as well.

Also watched August Rush a few weeks back... excellent movie. A lot better than I thought. A-

Unfortunately I wanted the Golden Compass.... the book rules.... this movie sucked donkey balls..... big time... too slow... the book ending wasn't used... it was instead reserved for part two. The Gorram Hollywood pricks screwed this one hard.... the Catholic church doesn't need to worry about the anti catholic stuff... this movie blows. D. The only saving factor was the daemons. They were cool. I need to stop reading books prior to some movie releases... sigh.

Oh Nick ,my Nick. Went and saw National Treasure:Book of secrets. 8 went and we all loved. A few of us are already thinking about #3. It was fast paced , with car chases and a bad guy thrown in. Although to be honest, Ed Harris is not the scariest bad guy around. The best part was the number of families in the theatre. Lots of clapping when the movie was over. A-. I will be definitely be buying it when it hits DVD status. BTW, it got awful reviews but dont let that keep you from seeing it unless you and the reviewers are usually in sync.

Saw National Treasure this past weekend.

Started out a little wimpy, but developed into a very good, nail biting movie.

I highly recommend it.

Walk Hard (The Dewey Cox Story)

I went to see Walk Hard (The Dewey Cox Story). I won free tickets on a local radio station. I thought it would be pretty funny. Unfortunately it sucked big time. It wasn't even good. And unless you've already seen Walk the Line and Ray you wouldn't even get half the gags...boring. I give it a D

It looks really dumb.

So did you have to tell the people on the radio station that you recently came out of the closet?
