I saw Tropic Thunder last night. Tropic Thunder is the latest Ben Stiller movie that follows five actors who are filming a war flick who get stuck in a real jungle mixing it up with a guerilla drug gang.

This movie was funny. Robert Downey Jr. is an Australian who undergoes a medical procedure to darken his skin in order to play an African American soldier. "He is a dude who plays a dude who looks like another dude." LOL It's great to see Robert Downey Jr. making a comeback. He's an excellent actor.

Jack Black plays a heroin addict who goes through withdrawals in the jungle and is thrilled when they run into the Asian heroin gang.

Tom Cruise plays the movie studio mogul who's in charge of releasing the movie. I am not a fan of Tom (I think he's a WEIRDO in real life) but he did a great job in Tropic Thunder. In all of Tom's scenes I was laughing my ass off.

Ben Stiller can put out some stinkers but this one had plenty of laughs. His character was the "Ben Affleck" of the movie, you know, a meathead with a few hits but the star is falling. His character was the only one I didn't like.

There are other good performances in this movie (Nick Nolte, Matthew McConaughy, Danny McBride). And Jon Voight, Lance Bass and Jennifer Love Hewitt all had cameos. I give it an A-.

I, too, saw Tropic Thunder last night and it was a riot. Everyone of these actors is having the time of their lives and letting us in on it with the exception of Robert Downey Jr who is giving us the funniest performance I have seen in the last 5 years. Even Tom Cruise (yeah, really) is a riot in this one. Ben Stiller thankfully gives all the other performers an opportunity to really shine even though it's supposed to be a Ben Stiller flick. Danny McBride nearly runs off with the film in the first ten minutes and the trailers they show in the beginning to establish each of the actors is worth the $8.50 admittance. I will be seeing this film again to catch the parts I missed from laughing too hard the first time. A-

Thanks for the review guys.

Thresher--where are you finding movies for $8.50? All the ones I see are $10.50 and up. Are you paying matinee prices? If not, give us the inside scoop.

I live in StAugustine Florida with a theatre that is so small you wouldn't believe it. I need to take a picture of the box office. It is honestly ten feet across - barely! The thing is, they play first run movies, the popcorn is reasonable and the seats are comfortable. I can't complain. Oh, and apparently the prices are pretty good too! I thought $8.50 was kinda high. I guess not.

I guess here in San Diego they just want to get top dollar for everything so the movie ticket prices reflect that. I just wish the salaries matched the cost of living.

Anyway, thx.

I saw Death Race a couple hours ago. It's a futuristic story of a former race car driver who is framed for his wife's murder so he can drive for death race. Death race is a gladiator-like battle in cars with machine guns on them. It may sound kind of dumb, but it's somewhat original with really good action. I was disappointed in their attempts to create the good ol' generic prison scenes, but found the movie to be pretty good. The audience clapped often when justice was served I would give it a solid B.

Costco sells AMC tickets for $8 each, no restrictions. You just buy them at the register. I think they might only sell them in pairs.

This is the deal for Pittsburgh and DC Costco's, at least.

Costco also sells Regal tickets for $15 for 2 tickets. No restrictions. MD has Regal theaters.

The best deal on movie tickets is the Entertainment Book. There are tons of coupons for Regal Cinemas and others. You get your tickets at the box office for $6 each. New releases add a $1.50 or so fee to the ticket. Still a great deal, and you don't have to buy in advance.

The smaller Entertainment book sells each year in lots of cities for about $20. The larger one that I have costs about $45.

I saw Dark Knight yesterday.

The special effects were very good. However, the plot was confusing and at times it was difficult to figure out the good guys from the bad. And the background music drowned out Michael Caine's occasional mumbling.

The joker played a very good part. His chaos theory also applied to the movie in general.

If it wasn't for the special effects, I may have walked out.

Original?

Hardly... go take a look "Deathrace 2000" if you ever have a chance.

Saw "Righteous Kill" tonight. It stars Robert DeNiro and Al Pacino who are NYPD cops on the trail of a serial killer.

The acting was great (as expected) but the end was predictable and the script needed work to beef it up. The first half of the movie was slow. 50 Cent plays a drug dealer criminal. He's a terrible actor. John Leguizamo and Donnie Wahlberg play NYPD cops who also try to break the case. They were both excellent.

Overall I gave it a C. There's some gun violence and mild sex scenes but mostly convoluted, drawn-out dialogue.

somewhat original, DF, somewhat I guess I mean it's not the 3,000th zombie movie or something

The American Eagle by our theater has a deal where if you try on a pair of jeans, you get a free ticket. My friends have been going twice a day or so, and I've just been bumming free tickets off them. We went to see "Disaster Movie" not knowing what it was about, and let me tell you, it was a DISASTER!! In the beginning, there was a guy running from what sounded like a large animal, and so I think, "Ok, this guys gonna get eaten. Cool!" Nope, the movie just keeps changing scenes and makes absolutely no sense, which seems to be the intention. We walked out within 10 minutes and went to see "Step Brothers" again.

Edit: Anyone else seen "Righteous Kill?" I had trouble with the previews because it seems like a sequel to "The Boondock Saints" which frankly, can not be undone.

I saw Miracle at St. Anna tonight and was really surprised. It is the story of an African American regiment in WW2. There's some Saving Private Ryan action, a good amount of dialogue, and some originality. The movie was REALLY long. Almost 3 hours I think. I really liked it. I would give it a solid A and a recommendation. I think it's one of those movies you only see once and then think about every now and then for a long time.

I am kind of ashamed to admit it, but I watched Quarantine last night. It's kind of fun in the beginning with a lot of light humor. It's another zombie movie set in an apartment building which has been locked down due to an infection with dozens of people in it. I really don't think it's anything special, as there have been 200 of these that came before it. I'd give it a C-.

Well, since you're watching a tape being filmed by a character in the movie, there isn't a lot to gain from seeing it in the theater. There's some bobbing, ect.

Zack and Miri Make a Porno - B. Not a strong B but a B all the same. Zack and Miri make a porno to pay off their bills when their power and water are cut off. I saw the film this afternoon in a basically empty theater. I think the film may have been funnier in a packed house where some of the jokes would have played to a broader audience. As it was I was the solitary audience and most jokes were flat. That being said, anytime Jason Mewes was on the screen things got considerably funnier. I am a big Kevin Smith fanboy so I saw this film through less than objective eyes. Even then I just wasn't that impressed. This wasn't as bad as Jersey Girl (which hilariously enough isn't even listed in his IMDB report!) but not as good as, say, Clerks or an episode of Reaper.

Just realized there was no review for Body of Lies. I saw it about a week and a half ago. At this point, I would just wait for the DVD. I thought it was a good watch, and would give it an B+. There was only one point where I appreciated watching it in a theater though, when a helicopter flew overhead. For those of you who saw the previews, it's pretty straight forward. It's the story of a CIA man on the ground who is trying to run an operation while his supperior in Langley keeps pulling crap on his own. The whole movie is about power struggles, and it's nice to see some other countries patted on the back. There are some nice twists. I would highly reccomend a view once it hits DVD. Has anyone seen Eagle Eye?

I rented "Expelled" this week. It is a documentary with Ben Stein.

Excellent film which shows the bias in the scientific community and the media towards evolution with it's shaky claims. A must see for people with an open mind.

I watched "Boogie Man: The Lee Atwater Story" last night on PBS, pretty interesting show that was. I would suggest watching it.

Thumbs up Role Models

Role Models: B+!
Paul Rudd and Seann William Scott play two men who must act as mentors as a part of their community service when they wreck their work truck in a hilarious sequence. As mentors the movie is only as good as the kids they are mentoring and fortunately the movie cast great kids in the roles. The kids are very tough to break through and the adults really struggle to with their own issues. Seann W. Scott keeps it hilarious while an ongoing joke about Paul Rudd looking like Ben Affleck had me giggling through the film. I really enjoyed the movie. It worked on lots of levels. It was crude, lewd and still quite touching. Plus, they dig Kiss. How can you not like a movie that digs Kiss? Well worth the $8.50
