I saw Tropic Thunder last night. Tropic Thunder is the latest Ben Stiller movie that follows five actors who are filming a war flick who get stuck in a real jungle mixing it up with a guerilla drug gang.
This movie was funny. Robert Downey Jr. is an Australian who undergoes a medical procedure to darken his skin in order to play an African American soldier. "He is a dude who plays a dude who looks like another dude." LOL It's great to see Robert Downey Jr. making a comeback. He's an excellent actor. Jack Black plays a heroin addict who goes through withdrawals in the jungle and is thrilled when they run into the Asian heroin gang. Tom Cruise plays the movie studio mogul who's in charge of releasing the movie. I am not a fan of Tom (I think he's a WEIRDO in real life) but he did a great job in Tropic Thunder. In all of Tom's scenes I was laughing my ass off. Ben Stiller can put out some stinkers but this one had plenty of laughs. His character was the "Ben Affleck" of the movie, you know, a meathead with a few hits but the star is falling. His character was the only one I didn't like. There are other good performances in this movie (Nick Nolte, Matthew McConaughy, Danny McBride). And Jon Voight, Lance Bass and Jennifer Love Hewitt all had cameos. I give it an A-. |

I, too, saw Tropic Thunder last night and it was a riot. Everyone of these actors is having the time of their lives and letting us in on it with the exception of Robert Downey Jr who is giving us the funniest performance I have seen in the last 5 years. Even Tom Cruise (yeah, really) is a riot in this one. Ben Stiller thankfully gives all the other performers an opportunity to really shine even though it's supposed to be a Ben Stiller flick. Danny McBride nearly runs off with the film in the first ten minutes and the trailers they show in the beginning to establish each of the actors is worth the $8.50 admittance. I will be seeing this film again to catch the parts I missed from laughing too hard the first time. A-

Thanks for the review guys.
Thresher--where are you finding movies for $8.50? All the ones I see are $10.50 and up. Are you paying matinee prices? If not, give us the inside scoop.

I live in StAugustine Florida with a theatre that is so small you wouldn't believe it. I need to take a picture of the box office. It is honestly ten feet across - barely!
The thing is, they play first run movies, the popcorn is reasonable and the seats are comfortable. I can't complain. Oh, and apparently the prices are pretty good too! I thought $8.50 was kinda high. I guess not. |

I saw Death Race a couple hours ago. It's a futuristic story of a former race car driver who is framed for his wife's murder so he can drive for death race. Death race is a gladiator-like battle in cars with machine guns on them. It may sound kind of dumb, but it's somewhat original with really good action. I was disappointed in their attempts to create the good ol' generic prison scenes, but found the movie to be pretty good. The audience clapped often when justice was served
I would give it a solid B. |

Costco sells AMC tickets for $8 each, no restrictions. You just buy them at the register. I think they might only sell them in pairs.
This is the deal for Pittsburgh and DC Costco's, at least.

Costco also sells Regal tickets for $15 for 2 tickets. No restrictions. MD has Regal theaters.

The best deal on movie tickets is the Entertainment Book. There are tons of coupons for Regal Cinemas and others. You get your tickets at the box office for $6 each. New releases add a $1.50 or so fee to the ticket. Still a great deal, and you don't have to buy in advance.
The smaller Entertainment book sells each year in lots of cities for about $20. The larger one that I have costs about $45.

I saw Dark Knight yesterday.
The special effects were very good. However, the plot was confusing and at times it was difficult to figure out the good guys from the bad. And the background music drowned out Michael Caine's occasional mumbling. The joker played a very good part. His chaos theory also applied to the movie in general. If it wasn't for the special effects, I may have walked out. |
