So far, all I've found is widescreen was not the norm until the late 1950s.
Anyone know what film it was that was shot and presented in widescreen?

Hey Bires. You got me intrigued... Found a site that says the first movie to be shown in wide screen is The Robe (which came out in 1953). Find it about halfway down the page: http://www.high-techproductions.com/widescreen.htm

Here's a good page I read several years ago. It talks all about the different formats of widescreen and their histories. These guys at the digital bits are pretty hardcore about this stuff.
