Chappelle's Show Third Season Suspended

Quote:
In a surprise announcement Wednesday, Comedy Central said that the highly anticipated third season of Dave Chappelle's show will not make its May 31 premiere date. "Comedy Central has suspended production on the third season of Chappelle's Show until further notice," network spokesman Tony Fox said in a brief statement. "All parties are optimistic that production will resume in the near future."

No official reason was given for the shutdown, but sources told E! News that Chappelle has been MIA from the set for weeks. There was no indication on how long the suspension would last.

In December, the network said that Chappelle's Show was behind schedule after Chappelle fell ill, forcing the network to postpone the expected February debut of new episodes.

"Dave--and his entire production crew for that matter--got a bit of a late start on writing season three," Fox told the New York Post. Production was slated to resume in January.

Last August, Chappelle, 31, reupped with Comedy Central in a massive two-year deal, valued at $50 million by the Hollywood Reporter. The deal also set a new Industry precedent--reportedly giving the funnyman a large cut of backend DVD sales.

Featuring Chappelle's often raunchy standup, offbeat sketches and killer parodies of Prince and Rick James, Chappelle's Show has steadily built a huge following since its debut in January of 2003. By the end of season two, the half-hour show was often pulling in more than three million viewers, a substantial number for basic cable. The first season currently ranks as the all-time top-selling TV show on DVD. (Paramount has indefinitely pushed back the release of the second season--the studio hopes to time the DVD to the start of season three.)

In addition to his gig at Comedy Central, Chappelle had been working on a book for Hyperion. There has been no word on the book's status; there's also no word on the reported Rick James biopic for Paramount in which Chappelle would portray the late R&B wild man.

One of the best shows on TV right now. This sucks.

so sad...

one of my favorite chappelle moments:

"Just because I am dressed like this, does NOT make me a whore..."
"Ladies, that is absolutely right. It's true, just because you dress like that, does not make you a whore. But you ARE wearing a whore's uniform and it's f*****g confusing! Imagine if I wore a police outfit on the streets."
"Officer, officer! You've gotta come quick!"
"Excuse me! JUST because I'm dressed like this, does NOT mean I'm a cop!"

anyone else remember that one?

Honestly... I think not. The Chappelle show is too much of a cash cow to not do it...

Pretty much.. I get the sneaky suspicion that Comedy Central is bowing to pressure from the "religious right".... I won't be at all surprised if it comes to light that someone like "Bill O'Reilly or Rush Limbaugh" has said something to cause this chain of events.

But then again... maybe they just want to get maximum hype and sales from the Second season DVD before releasing Season 3?

Good luck to the FCC. They're in charge of regulating public airwaves. Cable isn't broadcast over public airwaves.

Nope, havent forgotten those. Just listed my top 2.
It would be better for him to just make season 3 and do an unedited DVD set imo.

actually i think it will come out that it's all Dave's doing. i don't think he's a very happy man. i'll bet he's burnt out. i've read a few interviews with him and he does not consider himself funny at all. he thinks it's nuts that he's gotten this big.

From today's deal page...

Quote:
Amazon - Chappelle`s Show - Season 1 (2003) for $13.50! (Posted by: Leon)
The 2003 debut of Chappelle`s Show on Comedy Central marked a high point for the cable channel, and now the entire, wildly creative first season can be seen, with hundreds of bleeps removed. That`s not to say Chappelle`s Show is perfect entertainment: there are too many moments among the 12 episodes here that descend into pointless scatology and booty fever. But for the most part, Chappelle, a talented comic slowly growing into greatness, is trying to push the sketch-humor envelope and succeeds at surprising us with original concepts and merciless execution.

Heh... "scatology and booty fever". What is Leon focusing in on here...

He just copied and pasted the Amazon review.

By the way, if you're picking that up from Amazon, do yourself a favor and grab Killing Them Softly, his standup special. Easily in the top 5 standup performances I've ever seen. I wasn't thrilled with his closing joke, but the rest of the show kills.
