Half Blood Prince (BOOK 6) SPOILER THREAD
Ok I can not wait for people to finish the book and I know at least one other member finished the book so let's talk. BEWARE there are SPOILERS!!! ok I will makeit so you have to scroll down just so you don't catch a spoiler you don't want to.... SPOILERS!!! if you don't want to find out DON'T READ ON
![]() So what was the most shocking thing to you? I had a feeling that Dumbledor would die. I just didn't think that Snape would have done it.... but it adds new elements to the story. At first I was mad.... than I realized that Snape just was forced to do the one thing he didn't want to do. Kill the only person in the world that Trusted him, truly trusted him. That is why I believe that Dumbledor was pleading with Snape... pleading for him to infact kill him and not blow his cover. So Snape had every right to be really really pissed when Harry called him a coward.... Snape is not going to be hunted for being loyal to Dumbledor Also I liked the Romance part, I knew it!! I have been telling my GF that Harry and Ginny just had to hook up! It made perfect sense. He would become part of the only wizarding family that truly accepted him, the Weasley's. This is the part the depressed me the most though, when Harry tells Ginny he can't be with her because of what he has to do and to protect her... imho Ginny Weasley is a good fighter and would be a nice partner in both her life and his quests. And would Ron (Won Won) and Hermione just officially hook up! So let's talk Half Blood Prince

sounds like spiderman in that sense... but they hooked up.
Also I'm not reading the book so if you can clarify what you mean with Dumbledore and Snape that'd be great.

wow, that's a tough one, not because of how to tell it, but where to start..... because most of the events kinda lead up to this moment and well.......here is a shot at it.. if You need more info I will try to explain the best I can....
As we know, Dumbledor trusts Snape probably more than anyone else. At the begaining of the book we find out that Malfroy has to do something for the Dark Lord, we don't know what, but his mom gets Snape to make an unbreakable vow to do the deed if Malfroy couldn't. Snape takes the vow (so it looks like he is a double agent, which is most likely is). Fast forward to the end. Malfroy finds a way to get Death Eaters into Hogwarts. The dark sign is there and all. Dumbledor and Harry return from a task (If I get into it it will take me too long to type it). Dumbledor is weak from drinking poison inorder to get what he and Harry were seeking. He tells Harry to get Snape. Harry puts on his invis cloak, but is stunned by Dumbledor just as Malfroy (draco) enters the room. His mission was to get Deatheaters into Hogwarts and Kill Dumbledor. But Malfroy is not a killer and hesistates. Well Enter Snape. He sees the weakened Dumbledor surrounded by Malfroy and three other death eaters. Snape looks surprised and Dumbledor begs him... Severous (sp) please.... a few times and then Snape kills Dumbledor with the killing curse.... Later Harry calls Snape a coward when he is chasing him out of Hogwarts.... and Snape roars that he is not one... I'd have to agree with Snape..... if he infact killed Albus to keep his cover, it takes a lot of courage to kill the ONLY person who trust you, thus killing the only person who could get you out of trouble...... but that is just my take on it. |

Yes, Won Won and Hermione need to hurry up and get together. And I think it's stupid that Harry's pushing Ginny away. She's a great asset not only romantically, but she'd be a good fighter. She's already proven that. And believe it or not, Neville too. Do you really think he'll leave school? I don't think it's a good idea since there's still a bunch of stuff he doesn't know that he'll prolly NEED to know. Another thing on my mind is will book 7 really be the end of the Potter series? I mean, he's still got 4 Horcruxes to find. I hope not, as I really love these books. Edit: And why didn't Harry voice his concerns to Dumbledore about Malfoy being a death eater, and also let him know that Snape's always treated him badly? Also, why did Dumbledore stupify Harry? So there would be a witness? Last edited by Gothic Girl : 07-25-2005 at 01:10 AM. |

I thought he did voice his opinions about Malfoy but he was sooo obsessed who would have believed him. Also I think Snape truly hated Potter's Dad, and maybe the mother for pitying him. He stupified Harry so he wouldn't have ran into Malfoy. Well the number 4 is up in the air I think. The Book was one, the ring was number two.....the locket could have already been destroyed by R.A.B. as he replaced it with the fake. (BTW R.A.B. is most likely Sirius' Brother Regulus or something, his name is mentioned in ORder of the Phoenix and Black said that Voldemort killed his brother... and if he did steal a Horcrux then yeah that would be a good reason) So 1. The Book 2. The Ring of Slytherin 3. The Locket of Slytherin 4. The Cup of Hufflepuff 5. Something of Ravenclaws or Griffyndor (or both, if R.A.B. did destroy the locket, then how's to say Voldemort didn't make a new Horcrux?) 6. The Snake 7. Voldemort and I agree, Ginny, Luna, and Neville are good fighters. Neville and Luna need to snog haha |

Just finished the book last night and here are a few of my comments:
1) Was surprised that Dumbledore died. I'm not sure exactly what this means, but it is obvious that Dumbledore was stalling with Malfoy so it appears that he sacrificed himself. Perhaps he wanted Snape to kill him to keep up his cover, but does anyone really think that Snape could deceive Voldemort? I do think that Dumbledore's sacrifice strengthened Harry and may have been the sole reason for his death (ala Obe Won for Luke in Star Wars). 2) Bought time with Harry and Ginny. I like the note in a previous post about Harry becoming part of the only family that truly accepted him. Harry telling Ginny that they couldn't be together was the only thing he could do if he truly cared for her. 3) Harry really has to return for Hogwarts for year 7. I can't see him, Ron and Hermoine dropping out of school to find the Horcruxes. 4) The teacher of Defense against the Dark Arts did not last more than a year again this year. 5) Ron and Hermoine just need to bite the bullet and go for it. 6) What happens to Malfoy now? I'm sure there some other notes/comments I can't think of right now. Hopefully, Rowling can get this book out to us a little quicker than it took for #6 to be released.

I have a feeling that Dumbledore is going to come back somehow. What was all that talk about how he has ways of hiding Malfoy and his mother so everyone thinks they're dead?
Also, I would think that Harry breaking up with Ginny wouldn't make much of a difference. Voldermort can still go after any one of the Weasleys or Hermione to hurt him...

Dumbledore is dead.... plan and simple... however he lives on... the only real reason I can see for Harry to return to Hogwarts (besides to be with Ginny) is that in the Head Mistress' office there is a nice new photo of Dumbledore (which WOULDN'T appear unless he is infact dead). This picture is just like a living Dumbledore. It will talk, think, and act like Dumbledore... atleast I think.... just like Black's uncle did in book 5.

I'm expecting book 7 to be a huge book. ![]() |

I was actually quite surprised they killed Dumbledore... i thought Snape was going to die breaking the unbroken vow and save the day by foiling Malfoy. I really want to know why Dumbledore trusted Snape so much - if Snape really was doing his bidding by killing him, then it enforces Dumbledore's knowledge & foresight. Or, if Snape really is a double agent, then it shows that even Dumbledore is fallable. And I think it's silly that Harry cut ties with Ginny, but seemed to have no problems letting Hermione and Won Won join in the next stage of his battle. Wouldn't he be just as upset, if not more, if one of them died? Either way, I'm ready for the last book!!! Rowling better be writing fast!

.I think the reason they aren't going back to school in the next book is because that book would be about 1000 pages long if they had to go to Hogwarts again. Oh, and agreed with whoever thinks R.A.B is a relative of Sirius. As soon as I saw the "B", I was thinking it was either Sirius himself (before he died maybe...or if he wasn't dead) or a relative of his. And finally, I think Dumbledore froze Harry because he didn't want Harry to help him fight. In other words, he planned to die there. At first I thought maybe he staged it to look like he died, but the phoenix crying made me think otherwise.

But he also promised that if Malfoy failed, he would do it for him. Quote:
Dumbledore made it very clear throughout the book that he considered Harry much more valuable, since he was supposed to finish off Voldemort. Thus, he probably didn't want Harry to interfer and endanger himself, knowing that death would be the result. |

Personally, I think that Hogwarts is going to be closed for the majority of the next book. It would make it very very easy for Harry to not return to the school that way and part of the "joy" would be the reopening of the school.
I believe that Dumbledore froze Harry in order to save him from himself. Time and time again, Harry has jumped into battles and he would have done so in this instance. Dumbledore wanted Harry to see that Malfoy, although misguided, was being forced to act in order to protect himself. Harry would have attacked Malfoy without waiting and would never have learned this fact. Had the other Deatheaters not come in, I honestly think Malfoy would have ended up accepting Dumbledores offer. As for Snape, no one has mentioned the fact that HE is the Half-Blooded Prince. He had created deadly spells/curses even while in school as evidenced by what was written in the book. His entire life which incidentially mirrors both Harrys and Voldemort (One pure parent and one muggle-born parent) has had him trying to prove that he is worthy. I think this is evidenced by the spells, by his joining the death eaters to begin with, and by his desire to become famous/important wizard. The fact that he killed Dumbledore, the one wizard who was never afraid of voldemort and voldemort had not beaten, will definitely lead to infamy. I think Dumbledore in his weaken state could not beat Snape, but thought that Snape would have to face his inner demons when he realized he killed the one person who believed in him. As such, Dumbledore may have felt that if his death became the impetitous for Snape to truly turn against Voldermort it was worth it. I think that Harry realized that although his friends and "family" will always be targets of the Death Eaters, he realized that his girlfriend would be an unresistable one. Until he is free of his burden it is unfair of him to endanger others to a larger extent. He has already shown how he was willing to put others in front of himself by making Ron, Hermoine, and Ginny drink the luck exlir rather than splitting it between Dumbledore and himself. It saved their life, but who knows what would have happened had Harry and Dumbledore taken it. WHen they left, Dumbledore would never have been seen by the woman under the imperious curse and Malfoy alerted allowing the Death eaters in. I know that Rowling has mentioned that she does not view this series as ending in the way that fans would like. This comment has led to speculation that either Harry would die or turn against Ron. I happen to think that the current death was one of the unhappy things she had in mind when she made the comment.

Ok, so one of my friends has a theory on the horcruxes: He thinks Harry himself is one.
His theory: The other horcruxes all have "S" shapes on them, and Harry's scar is his "S" mark. Also, Voldemort needed Harry's blood to help make himself whole again. Now here's where it gets hazy, because it's been a while since we read the old books. Harry used to get headaches and visions from Voldemort's perspective all the time. He didn't have a single one in this book, and the guess is that he hasn't had any since Voldemort took his blood....which would make sense, if he took the part of his soul back from Harry. Marinate on that. |

Interesting theory, but I think the lack of headaches and visions was explained by Dumbledore in Half-Blood Prince. He said that now that Voldemort knew that Harry was having visions of Voldemort and what he was doing, Voldemort was being much more careful not to allow Harry to see him. |

I suspect the reason Dumbledore trusted Severus Snape is that Snape took an Unbreakable Oath to help destroy Voldemort and the Death Eaters. I think Snape realizes that Voldemort is a fruad and just power hungry. Voldemort's power resides in the fact that he can not be killed because he split his soul and the Death Eaters. He's not the most powerful wizard.
Snape was caught when he was asked to take the 2nd Unbreakable Oath. If he didn't take it he wasn't doing everything he could to expose the Death Eaters. Snape didn't really know what Malfoy's task was when he took the Oath. He was pretending he did to try to find out what the plan was. So he was forced to take it by his secret Oath to Dumbledore to expose the plan. So, Snape hated Harry's parents, but he has to protect Harry because he could be the one to destroy the Death Eaters. Snape had to kill Dumbledore because Malfoy wasn't able to and he had to keep the 2nd Oath. Snape had to protect Malfoy because of the Oath, so he got out of there as soon as he could. Snape is in between a rock and a hard place. He did the only thing he could do. |

I just finished the book and the theory about Harry being a Horcrux and how Snape is under a unbreakable vow to destroy the death eaters are pretty good, and I'm betting they're right on the money. I doubt JKR would make Snape so obviously one dimensional and making Harry having to sacrifice himself to kill Voldemort is consistent with the plot lines in the book.
I liked the idea of Ginny and Harry and I'm hoping it comes back. From what I imagined, I think Ron and Hermione are already a couple, judging by what happens in the end. Dumbledore's death was pretty shocking to me. I was expecting that he was either faking it, or his Phoenix would revive him, or something. It would be sweet, though, if Dumbledore has his own Horcrux. I don't understand, however, the significance of the potion book and the half-blood prince. |

I just finished the book and am pretty depressed (as I have heard others are too). I was guessing either Dumbledore or Hagrid were going to die. I settled on Dumbledore when he took the potion telling Harry "You're much more important than me" or something like that. Dumbledore definitely knew what Harry would do in each situation in the end, so he had to stun Harry, as many of you said, to keep Harry from interfering.
I was determined to trust Snape after falling for Rowling's tricks in the earlier books. I was glad to read your theories about why Snape killed Dumbledore. If that is true, it all makes sense. I think Harry & Ginny will definitely stay together until the end. I don't think she will let him go and after some time, he'll realize that he needs her support to win in the end. Rowling is a master wordsmith and I can't wait for Book 7 either! I hope it isn't longer than a year, but I'm not holding my breath. She will want to make sure it is perfect before releasing it.

That's a good point about consistency. Did any of you catch the errors in Book 4? Depending on which copy you have, there was an error on page 580 (hardcover) on the last page of "The Dream" chapter. The line is supposed to read "Come now," said Fudge angrily. It originally read "Come now," said Crouch angrily. Crouch was supposed to be missing at the time.
The second major error was on page 666 (hc) near the end of the "Priori Incantatem" chapter. The shadows of Harry's mom and dad come out in the wrong order. Voldemort killed James first, then Lily trying to protect Harry. So, the shadows should have come: Cedric, Frank, Bertha, Lily, James, and so on. In my copy, James comes out first and tells Harry that his mother is coming. Go to any bookstore and flip to that page and you'll see they sloppily fixed it. That was the last time Rowling let herself be controlled by a publishing deadline set by someone else. |
