The Sign&Trade deals in the NBA. Epitome of selfishness?

Scenario:

Ok, here's your chance to play for the team of your choice. Because of salary cap rules, you can sign with them for 80 million dollars. Also because of salary cap rules, you can sign with your former team for 90 million dollars. You decide that you want both.

So you make it so that your destination team must give up players to get you, rather than simply improving themselves by signing you. Enough players, in fact, must be traded away to add up to your whopping contract.

I know it's a business and all. It may not exactly be selfish, but it sure ain't selfless.

Anyone see my point here?

Dave.

OR you could look at it for what it really is: A player's current team not wanting to lose him for absolutely nothing in return.

Exactly, the player gets some more money, but the team also gets something in return for the player. I think the team that trades the player away is making out in this deal. Also, Sign and trades are typically done to satisfy the salary cap, so I think the teams are the ones that push the sign and trades.

I think you just answered you're own question. Its a business, and when it comes to brass tacks its every man (or franchise) for himself. Show me one instance where an owner put his players before his profits.

So true...

And without going into a multipage rant about how we pay individuals millions of dollars to play a game, yet cannot solve some of lifes most basic diseases or issues, people are still starving and children are still getting sub-standard education, I'll say it's a pretty sad state we've come to exist in.

Should we do pay-per-view battles? Civil war style? You know it would sell.

If we really gave a cr@p they shouldn't have to. Instead of investing our time and money into sports and their periphenelia we would be donating it to feed the hungry, cure diseases, support the soldiers, etc... you know all the stuff claim to be important pretty much in lip service only.

Yeah, and this is what's kinda sad about the NBA. It seems like more and more of the seats are owned by corporations or high rollers who don't care about the game, but only want to use them for friends and clients. The average Joe with his kids, it's tougher for him. Lower levels at the MCI Center for a Wizards (Wizards!!!) game are around $100 each. Think the average family can afford that on a regular basis, if at all?

I can take my kids to a baseball game and get tickets, park, and a bit of food for around $100 total. They enjoy it more, too...

Just seems like the NBA isn't as FAN-TASTIC as they'd like to be perceived as...

Honestly...

I live in a city that has both professional basketball (Pacers) and professional football (Colts).

I have attended approximately 8 Pacers games and I have NEVER seen the Colts play live in the 12 years that I have lived here.

Honestly, ticket prices are too ridiculous to go watch the Colts... even in the "cheap seats". I figure that I can get a better view of the action from the televised game anyway.

And now the Colts want a new stadium (or else they threatened to leave Indianapolis) so our local government passed an additional "food and beverage tax" and a "hotel tax" to help offset the cost of new construction of a convertible domed stadium with more "private seat liscenses" so that they can make even more money....

Pretty much... I don't know if I'll ever go see a Colts game. I just can't part with the cash for the limited amout of entertainment they provide.

True, true. I will say this, though: there's 41 home NBA games a year. Football only has 8. And football seems to have more of a following in the US than basketball does.

Football is expensive, but I'll pony up to watch it. I guess it's all a matter of personal preference.

For family entertainment, both are too expensive. I go back to my baseball example...
