depends on what you typically like to read and what you're in the mood for. i think when a thread like this was raised before, many people chimed in with sci-fi books, which i'm not personally into.

in preparation for a short-story seminar i'll be taking in the fall, i've been reading collections of short stories by Roald Dahl, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Flannery O'Connor, and John Updike. if you like short stories, then these are all terrific.

Just finished "Killing Floor" by Lee Child. Very good book. Action, drama, guns, blood, and a little suspense. I loved it.

"The FairTax Book". Book about some legislature currently in Congress to do away with income taxes and the IRS and replace them with a consumption tax. It's a good read and gives lots of insight into why the tax code is what it is today.

Currently reading "American Gods" by Neil Gaiman. Its pretty good so far. Fantasy based. And based in current times.

That's his worst effort yet. You'll be disappointed. I loved "Me Talk Pretty One Day", though.

I plowed through the Harry Potter book in about 3 days, and I'm almost done with Collapse by Jared Diamond (non-fiction book about why past societies have collapsed...awesome stuff if you're a nerd like me). Next on my list is Sex, Drugs, and Cocoa Puffs.

I'm reading "Dry" by Augusten Burroughs - I think his books are very similar to Sedaris' in style, although I like Burroughs more.

Also, just finished "smoke and mirrors" by Neil Gaiman, it's short stories which are supposed to be funny/twisted. Not too bad but not his best work.

Also reading "Lies my teacher told me", it's all about how wrong American textbooks are, it's interesting but it's kind of hard to read too much at a time so it's kind of my secondary book to whatever I'm reading at the moment.

some of my past favorite books have been by john eldredge. it started with the sacred romance, the journey of desire, waking the dead, and i have given and recommended wild at heart to many of my friends. fresh wind, fresh fire by jim cymbala is also an amazing book to read. i last read it about 4 years ago, and it is still one of my favorites.

currently, i'm reading confessions of a shopaholic by sophie kinsella-- a recommendation from my mother who is now working her way through the shopaholic series.

Nickel, I want to read that book. But first I have to find time.

Right now, I am stuck in a loop reading the same two pages over and over again (so far I have done it 25 times. I have to do it 48 but I doubt by the end I will need to read it.

I am crocheting a blanket for Audie and it's made of 48 squares... It was supposed to be done for her birthday (that was may 30) so I am wanting to get it done by the 25th when she gets back from her dad's house.

After that I want to pick up the first year of HP and read marathon through this last book by the time the new movie comes out

I've read that, and I loved it. Of course, I'm a history dork, so it interested me.

I've seen Running with Scissors sitting on the bookshelf in the library and been tempted, but I've heard interviews with Burroughs and he seems very...messed up. Is his stuff funny, or all tearjerky sad?

I love history, I just find this guy a little hard to read but I'm working my way through it.

Burroughs led a very messed up life but has a sense of humor about it. It doesn't get emotional from what I remember. I think it's worth a read - if you don't like it you can always stop (Fyi, Running with Scissors is about his childhood, and Dry and Magical Thinking is the adult years)

Primal.

It is about emotional intelligence in leadership. My boss had to read it for the upper management book club, I asked to borrow it.

As typical with these "management improvement" books, it is nothing more than a bunch of anecdotal evidence mixed with some warm fuzzies and obvious conclusions, none of which works in isolation of any other key management techniques.

Overall it is a decent book, just too many cliches and easy topics.

Cubsfan, how is 7 habits? More of the same?

Books like these can be OK, but sometimes turn out crap. Much like "Good to Great" and "Built to last", fooie.

Honestly, I really like it. While some of the stuff is pretty simple, there's a lot of good stuff in there. I like the tone of it better than other books of the kind. A lot of the other books are basically how to manipulate people, this one's more about how to change yourself.
