Mike Cameron must be in terrible pain. It says the CT scan revealed multiple fractures to both cheekbones and a broken nose. Sounds like he broke his face.

This almost could be categorized as a Suckage thread.

that's a big OUCH.
i feel bad for them but they committed a no-no going back to the basics of baseball.
you gotta call off your teammate. things happen fast, but still they have to be aware of who is going after the ball and call out their intentions to those nearby.

still... accidents happen, i know.

It's interesting that as the hours progress the author of the article updates it with the latest information. I kind of agree with Nickel that the "error" occured because of the fielders not looking out for each other. Yet my prayers and good wishes still go out to Mike Cameron. I was trying to think of what this injury would feel like...and it seems it would hurt to talk or eat or anything to do with your face. I hope he recovers from this and can return to baseball.

News on Mike Cameron is not good.

From http://mlb.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/news/a...=.jsp&c_id=mlb

Quote:
The Mets, citing privacy issues, declined to release details about the surgery or whatever additional injuries may have been detected during the procedure Friday night. But there were indications from people familiar with the situation, including manager Willie Randolph, that suggested the injuries to Cameron's face may have been more extensive than first diagnosed.

"There probably were more fragments," Randolph said. "I'm sure it probably was a little worse. There's a lot of stuff the [original] X-rays couldn't see."

Those stadiums get pretty loud, it can be hard to hear your teamates, especially when your running and huffing puffing.

update

Here's a link to an article on espn.com about Mike Cameron:

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2139271

Quote:
NEW YORK -- Injured right fielder Mike Cameron expects to miss the rest of the New York Mets' season while he recovers from a violent collision with teammate Carlos Beltran.

CameronCameron said Saturday he was unable to breathe or talk for a few moments after colliding with Beltran in the outfield on Aug. 11 in San Diego.

"I don't remember too much," Cameron said in a telephone interview with a pool reporter. "I was out of it for a minute. I couldn't breathe because I had blood coming out of my nose and my mouth at the same time. That was my main concern. Breathing, breathing. After that, I figured something was wrong because I couldn't really function that well."

Cameron broke both cheekbones and his nose in the collision and underwent surgery in San Diego. He also has a mild concussion and was placed on the disabled list.

Beltran has a cracked cheekbone and a mild concussion but decided not to have surgery and returned to the Mets' lineup this week.

Cameron said he still has headaches and half his face is numb.

"Everything is numb," he said. "My right eye is filled with blood from one of the vessels in there broke. The braces in my mouth are really tight along with the screws in my mouth. I'm just trying to take care of myself, make progress. The worst has already happened and it's only going to get better from here."

Cameron said he remembered being wheeled off the field.

"But I couldn't talk," he said. "My body was numb and I couldn't really talk. I tried to remain calm. I could see, just blurry. My body was in shock. I remember humming like a song or something in the ambulance. That kind of calmed me down."

In the back of the ambulance, he remembered medical personnel working on him.

"They're cutting my clothes off like it's a life-or-death situation," Cameron said. "There was a lot going on, and everything kind of happened in slow motion.

"You see football hits like that all the time. But when you have no equipment on, no facemasks, that can be pretty gruesome," he said.

At first, Cameron said he hoped to come back to play again this season.

"But then they told me this is really serious," he said. "So I had to take my hardheaded self and come to grips with [the fact that] I may not play again this year."

He said his eyes are sensitive to the sun.

"It's not like I'm healing a limb or something like that or a knee. These are my eyes," he said.

Cameron said he couldn't talk for two or three days after the collision because of the swelling on his face.

While he was in the hospital, several Padres came to visit.

"Trevor Hoffman came by with his jersey on, like what we do when we visit kids in children's hospitals," he said.

Cameron said his recovery has been slow.

"I'm doing OK," he said. "Every day is different. It's kind of like a toddler again. As soon as I was ready to get back on my feet again, everybody tells me I need to sit down. I can't do too much."

But Cameron doesn't think the collision will change the way he plays.

"I'll be fine," he said. "I always play without fear. I try to play fearlessly. That's just the way I try to play. It was just one of those things that happened."

A two-time Gold Glove winner, Cameron was batting .273 with 12 homers and 39 RBI before he was injured.

Dude, first time reading about this and watching the video. That was sickening how hard they hit. My hats off to Beltran and especially Cameron, I really hope he heals fully.
