Town ensnared with violence (after VT Game)

This past weekend’s football mayhem marked not only the tragedy of the Virginia Tech football team as its hopes for the national championship title were dashed, but it was also a weekend filled with numerous accounts of severe assaults and woundings.
Whether the incidents and arrests this weekend were all linked to football bedlam or not, Lt. Bruce Bradbery of the Blacksburg Police Department said 90 percent of all incidents that occurred were alcohol-related and zero of the attacks were conducted by Miami fans.
“We’ve been seeing a trend in the past few weeks towards more serious behavior by Blacksburg residents,” Bradbery said. “We at the Blacksburg police are not about to allow these types of incidents to occur in this town.”
A stabbing occurred at the 100 block of Clover Valley Circle on Nov. 5, Bradbery said. Blacksburg police responded to a call at 3 a.m. in which roommates Clark Fullerton Thomas, a 19-year-old Virginia Tech student, and Ryan Glen Bernier, a 20-year-old Virginia Tech student, were involved in a physical altercation where Thomas pulled out a knife and stabbed Bernier in the abdomen.
Bernier was flown to Roanoke Memorial Hospital where he was last listed in stable condition.
Thomas was charged with malicious wounding and was being held in jail without bond, Bradbery said. His arraignment was scheduled for Nov. 7 at the Montgomery County Courthouse.
An 18-year-old Virginia Tech freshman with an on-campus address was found severely injured on Nov. 5 at 2 a.m. Blacksburg police were dispatched to the 1400 block of Christine Court and found the victim, identified as Brian Joseph McCloskey, lying in the grass with severe head, neck and back injuries, Bradbery said.
McCloskey was flown to Roanoke Memorial Hospital where he continues to be listed in seriously critical condition. McCloskey has not yet regained consciousness after his life-threatening injuries.
Police are now intensely investigating the incident and have no witnesses or suspects in the case.
A 22-year-old female resident of Arlington, Va. reported a rape on Nov. 5 at 6:25 a.m. The victim was asleep in an apartment on Lawrence Lane when she was sexually assaulted, Bradbery said.
When Blacksburg police arrived at the scene, the victim was in the apartment but the suspect was not present. Police later located the suspect being led by two other men at an intersection not far from the reported incident.
Twenty-five year old James Drank Connor, a Coastal Carolina University student with a Conway, S.C., address and acquaintance of the rape victim, was identified as the suspect by the men who were leading him back to the apartment where the victim was found, Bradbery said.
Connor was charged with rape and is currently being held in jail without bond.
An assault took place at 10 p.m. Nov. 5 in the breezeway of a Collegiate Suites apartment complex. The victim, a 20-year-old male, was interviewed at Montgomery Regional Hospital by Blacksburg police officers where he said he did not know the suspect but described him as a white male in his early twenties.
Witnesses of the assault said the two exchanged words before the suspect threw the victim to the ground and kicked him in the face, Bradbery said.
The victim was treated at Montgomery Regional Hospital and released.
A Blacksburg police officer was assaulted while on patrol in downtown Blacksburg, Nov. 5. The officer witnessed a fight involving two men outside of Big Al’s Restaurant and Bar when he confronted the two, Bradbery said.
One man involved in the fight stepped away from the scene of the fight while the other man punched the officer in the face multiple times. When the officer grabbed the suspect who attempted to run away, the suspect administered further blows to the officer, Bradbery said.
The suspect, 19-year-old Virginia Tech student Christopher Vallard Rhett, with a Blacksburg address, was placed in jail without bond. His arraignment was to be held Nov. 7 at the Montgomery County Courthouse for charges including assault and battery, assault to a police officer, underage possession of alcohol and the use of the identification of another to avoid arrest, Bradbery said.
Neither Rhett nor the officer went to the hospital but both suffered facial injuries.
In an unprovoked attack, a 20-year-old male was assaulted at Hunter’s Ridge apartment complex Nov. 5 at 2:25 a.m. The victim was in the courtyard area of the complex when he was attacked by five or six people described as white males, Bradbery said.
Witnesses reported hearing the suspects and the victim arguing prior to the assault. The victim was able to escape and run away, before being caught by the suspects on near-by steps where he was assaulted again.
The victim was transported to Montgomery Regional Hospital where he was treated for injuries to the face and the head and released, Bradbery said.
A 34-year-old female Christiansburg resident was walking on Loudon Road, Nov. 6, when she was assaulted by a man driving by in a minivan.
The suspect pulled up next to the woman and asked if she wanted a ride. When the victim said “no,” the suspect exited the vehicle and attacked the victim who said she believes the attack was an attempted rape, Bradbery said.
The victim was transported to Montgomery Regional Hospital where she was treated for abrasions and bruises and possible internal injuries.
The assault of a Virginia Tech student occurred at 2:15 a.m. Nov. 6 on North Main Street, Bradbery said. Witnesses said the victim was pushed to the ground by the suspect who has not been identified.
The victim was transported to Montgomery Regional Hospital where he was treated for minor head injuries.
