Cardinals' Pujols named NL MVP

Cardinals' Pujols named NL MVP
New York, NY (Sports Network) - St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Albert Pujols was named the National League's Most Valuable Player on Tuesday.

Pujols garnered 378 points to outdistance Atlanta Braves center fielder Andruw Jones by 27 points. It is the first MVP award for Pujols, who recorded 18 first-place votes and 14 second-place tallies from the 32 voters.

Jones captured 351 total points on 13 first-place, 17 second-place and two third-place votes. Chicago Cubs first baseman Derrek Lee finished third with 263 points in the voting, which is conducted by the Baseball Writers' Association of America.

Pujols hit .330 with 41 home runs, 117 RBI and 129 runs scored for the NL Central-champion Cardinals. He ended the season ranked in the top three in the NL in average, homers and RBI, while leading the league in runs scored. The 25-year-old also recorded a .430 on-base and .609 slugging percentages.

A five-year veteran and four-time All-Star, Pujols finished in the top four in MVP voting in each of the last four years before becoming the first St. Louis Cardinal to garner the award since Willie McGee in 1985 and 16th different player in club history to take home the award. The last Cardinals first baseman to take home the honor was Keith Hernandez in 1979 when he shared the award with Pittsburgh's Willie Stargell.

Jones, 28, hit .263 with a major league-best 51 home runs and NL-leading 128 RBI for the NL East-champion Braves. A 10-year veteran, four-time All-Star and eight-time Gold Glove winner, Jones never finished better than eighth (2000) in the MVP voting in his career.

Lee also had a career year for the Cubs. He ended with 46 homers, 107 RBI and a major league-best .335 batting average. All three numbers were good enough to rank among the league leaders. He also posted a .418 on-base and .662 slugging percentage for Chicago, which missed out on the playoffs.

San Francisco's Barry Bonds had won the last four NL MVP awards.

Bwahah Mike Celizic from MSNBC had an article titled "Lee will win NL MVP" on the front page yesterday. He's gotta be a little embarrassed today, even though I thought Lee should be MVP as well.
